That is a company-reported prototype capability and future target, not a verified result from a production Chery EV.
No publicly identified vehicle has completed a standardized, independently verified 932-mile drive at −22°F. Chery has not published the vehicle, battery capacity, test route, speed profile, HVAC load, starting state of charge, or complete test protocol behind that exact range-and-temperature combination.

What Chery actually announced
At its Battery Night event in Wuhu on March 18, 2026, Chery presented the Rhino battery family, including the Rhino S solid-state line. Reporting from the event described S1000, S1200, and S1500 variants, along with a claimed solid-state energy-density milestone of 400 Wh/kg and a roadmap aiming for 600 Wh/kg.

Reporting on the event also indicated that Chery was targeting vehicle validation of the higher-density technology in 2027. Validation would be an important development step, but it would still not automatically establish a production vehicle’s EPA range or real-world winter range.

Chery’s broader Rhino family is expected to cover several battery types: hybrid H-series batteries, battery-electric E-series batteries, and future solid-state S-series batteries. The 932-mile claim belongs to the solid-state roadmap; it should not be read as the range of every Rhino-equipped vehicle or of a Chery model currently available to consumers.
Why the headline says 932 miles and −22°F
The numbers are conversions of Chery’s metric claims:
| Chery’s stated metric figure | U.S. customary conversion | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| 1,500 km | Approximately 932.1 miles | The approximate distance associated with the announced range target |
| −30°C | −22°F | The corresponding low-temperature figure |
That conversion does not prove that a car traveled 1,500 km at −30°C. Public material connects Chery’s solid-state roadmap with long range and low-temperature operation, but the accessible announcements do not document a complete vehicle test combining those two conditions.
The safer description is: Chery says its future solid-state battery technology could enable more than 1,500 km, or about 932 miles, including operation in conditions as cold as −30°C, or −22°F. The stronger statement—“Chery’s production EV already travels 932 miles at −22°F”—is not supported by the available evidence.
Claim versus proof
| Claim | Current status | What would be needed to verify it |
|---|---|---|
| Solid-state prototypes reach 400 Wh/kg | Chery-reported prototype milestone | Cell design details, measurement conditions, test data, and independent confirmation |
| Future cells could reach 600 Wh/kg | Roadmap or target | Production-ready cells, repeatable testing, durability data, and pack integration |
| Vehicle range above 1,500 km | Potential capability described by Chery | A named vehicle, usable battery capacity, standardized test procedure, and independently verified vehicle result |
| Operation at −30°C | Low-temperature capability associated with the roadmap | A defined cold-weather vehicle test showing battery performance, range, charging behavior, and cabin heating loads |
| More than 1,500 km at −30°C | No publicly documented combined production-vehicle test identified | A complete, repeatable test at the stated temperature and distance |
Why 400 or 600 Wh/kg does not automatically equal 932 miles
Energy density describes how much energy a battery stores relative to its mass. A cell rated at 400 Wh/kg or 600 Wh/kg is not the same thing as a vehicle battery pack with that energy density, and neither figure directly tells us how far a vehicle will travel.
Between the cell and the road are modules, pack enclosures, busbars, cooling or heating hardware, battery-management electronics, crash structures, wiring, and other components. The vehicle also has to move its own body, occupants, tires, and aerodynamic load. Pack-level energy density will normally be lower than cell-level energy density.
Range depends on much more than stored energy. Important variables include:
- the battery’s usable capacity and state-of-charge buffer;
- vehicle weight, aerodynamic efficiency, and frontal area;
- motor and inverter efficiency;
- tire design and inflation;
- speed, acceleration, terrain, and wind;
- cabin heating, battery heating, and thermal-management energy;
- starting and ending state of charge; and
- the test standard used to calculate the result.
Because Chery has not published enough vehicle-level information, the announced cell energy-density figures cannot be used to independently calculate a 932-mile range. A lighter battery could improve efficiency, while a larger battery could increase stored energy, but the announcement does not establish which approach Chery would use or what the resulting vehicle would weigh.

What “solid-state” means—and why the term needs caution
Conventional lithium-ion batteries use a liquid electrolyte to move lithium ions between the electrodes. Solid-state designs replace that liquid electrolyte with a solid material. In principle, that may allow different electrode materials, improved energy density, and potential safety advantages.
The label is not completely uniform across the industry. The International Energy Agency has noted that products described as solid-state can include intermediate designs such as semi-solid or almost-solid batteries, some of which retain a small amount of liquid electrolyte. A company’s use of “solid-state” therefore needs to be read alongside its actual cell chemistry, electrolyte composition, production method, and test conditions.
Solid-state batteries also introduce their own engineering challenges. The IEA’s Global EV Outlook 2026 says all-solid-state batteries remain difficult and expensive to manufacture. Integrating them into vehicle packs can require stricter mechanical conditions, including higher operating pressure. The technology may ultimately deliver important benefits, but high laboratory or prototype energy density does not by itself demonstrate affordable, durable, mass-produced vehicle packs.

Why −22°F is a demanding range claim
Cold temperatures affect both the battery and the rest of the vehicle. Low temperatures slow battery electrochemistry and can reduce available power or charging performance. The vehicle may also spend substantial energy warming the battery and heating the cabin, particularly before the pack reaches its preferred operating temperature.
That is why winter range cannot be inferred from a battery’s nominal energy density. A vehicle that achieves a long range in mild conditions may travel substantially less distance in severe cold, depending on its heat-pump system, resistive heaters, insulation, battery thermal management, route, speed, and passenger comfort settings.
The U.S. Environmental Protection Agency’s official range methodology includes a 20°F cold test and adjusts laboratory results for conditions such as cold temperatures, HVAC use, high speed, and aggressive driving. A −22°F test would be colder than that reference condition, but it would not be directly comparable unless the full test protocol were disclosed. Temperature alone is not enough: the result would also need to identify wind, road surface, speed, elevation, cabin temperature, preconditioning, charging stops, and the amount of battery energy considered usable.
What Chery has said about safety
Materials from Chery’s April 2026 international summit said its solid-state batteries had passed multi-scenario safety tests. That is a statement from Chery, not an independently established result in the accessible announcement. Chery did not publish a complete test protocol or an independent laboratory report alongside that claim.
“Passed safety tests” can cover many different evaluations. A meaningful assessment would identify the cells or packs tested, the abuse conditions, the number of samples, the pass criteria, and whether testing was performed internally or by an independent laboratory. Until those details are available, the safety statement should be reported as a manufacturer-reported milestone rather than a final verdict on production-battery safety.

How the claim compares with the wider battery industry
The IEA’s 2026 assessment provides an important reality check. It says the advantages commonly associated with solid-state batteries—including longer range and enhanced safety—have not yet been demonstrated in real-world applications at scale.
The agency describes all-solid-state cells as being produced at small scale for testing. Its outlook is that early commercial applications are likely to focus on premium segments before the first half of the 2030s, reflecting the difficulty and cost of manufacturing and pack integration.
That does not disprove Chery’s 400 Wh/kg prototype claim or its 600 Wh/kg roadmap. It explains why those announcements should be understood as development milestones and commercialization plans, not proof that a mass-market Chery EV is ready to deliver 932 miles in severe winter weather.

What would make the 932-mile claim credible?
Before treating the figure as a real vehicle specification, look for the following details:
- A named production or near-production vehicle. The result should identify the model, body style, tires, equipment, and battery pack.
- Usable battery capacity. Gross capacity, usable capacity, and the state-of-charge window should be separated.
- A recognized test standard. The report should explain whether the distance is based on a regulatory cycle, a controlled road test, or a manufacturer simulation.
- A complete temperature protocol. “−30°C operation” could mean the vehicle started, charged, or briefly functioned at that temperature; it does not necessarily mean the entire 1,500-km journey occurred at −30°C.
- Real-world operating details. Speed, HVAC settings, payload, wind, elevation, route, traffic, charging stops, and preconditioning can materially change the result.
- Independent verification. A regulator, accredited laboratory, or reputable third-party test would make the claim more meaningful than an announcement alone.
- Durability and charging data. Long range matters less if the pack cannot retain its performance over time or requires impractically slow or specialized charging.
Further reading on the technology
Readers who want the chemistry and engineering context behind the announcement may find a solid-state battery technology book useful. That kind of technical reference is background material only; it is not Chery’s battery, does not confirm the 932-mile claim, and should not be treated as a substitute for independent vehicle testing.
Frequently Asked Questions
Can a Chery EV currently drive 932 miles at −22°F?
There is no publicly identified production Chery EV with an independently verified result meeting that exact range-and-temperature combination. The figure comes from Chery’s solid-state battery roadmap and reported prototype claims.
Is 932 miles Chery’s official EPA range?
No. The approximately 932-mile figure is the conversion of more than 1,500 km. The available announcement does not identify an EPA-certified vehicle, an EPA label range, or a completed regulatory test.

Repair common Windows errors and clear accumulated junk for a smoother, more stable PC - no reinstall needed.Free scan · no reinstallWhat does 400 Wh/kg mean for an EV?
It is a cell-level energy-density figure: the amount of stored energy relative to cell mass. It does not equal pack-level energy density or directly determine vehicle range. Pack hardware, vehicle efficiency, usable capacity, speed, weather, and heating loads all matter.
When could Chery’s solid-state battery technology reach vehicles?
Reporting on Chery’s March 2026 Battery Night indicated a target for vehicle validation of the higher-density version in 2027. That is a development target, not a confirmed consumer launch date or guarantee of availability in a particular country.
The Bottom Line
Chery’s announcement is significant as a solid-state battery development milestone, but the 932-mile figure should not be reported as a proven winter range result. The math is simply more than 1,500 km converted to miles and −30°C converted to −22°F. Until Chery identifies a vehicle and publishes a complete, repeatable, independently verified test, the most accurate description is that the technology could enable that performance—not that a production EV has already achieved it.
