The mass adoption he imagined did not arrive on schedule. But Steinmetz was more than a bold forecaster: he argued that electric cars suited city travel, assessed their practical drawbacks, worked on a vehicle motor design and helped launch a company that built electric trucks and cars.
What Steinmetz predicted about electric cars
At a 1914 National Electric Light Association convention in Philadelphia, Steinmetz forecast that electric vehicles would soon serve both pleasure and business. IEEE Spectrum’s 2026 account quotes him as saying: “I have no doubt that in 10 years, more or less—rather less than more—we will see the field of the pleasure and business vehicle covered by such an electric car in large numbers. And I believe I underestimate when I say that 1,000,000 or more will be used.” (IEEE Spectrum, 2026)
That prediction was striking against the market of the time. IEEE Spectrum reports that the United States then had about 1.2 million gasoline-powered cars and 35,000 electric vehicles. The forecast’s basic direction proved more durable than its timetable: the same account says the United States had about one million electric vehicles on the road by 2018, far later than Steinmetz expected.
Why he thought electric vehicles could work
City driving seemed well suited to electric cars
Steinmetz’s case began with how people used cars. He saw short, relatively slow urban trips as a natural fit for electric vehicles. That was a use-case argument, not a claim that electric cars were superior for every journey: limited range and lower speed were among the disadvantages he recognized.

Charging could benefit electric utilities
He also connected vehicle charging to the business of power companies. Charging cars at night, he reasoned, could give utilities a new way to sell electricity. IEEE Spectrum reports that Steinmetz estimated this could create US $75 million in additional annual business for power stations—an amount the article renders as about $2.5 billion today. These are figures reported by IEEE Spectrum, not a new calculation here.
How Steinmetz weighed the practical tradeoffs
A typed comparison from March 1920, as described by IEEE Spectrum, shows that Steinmetz’s advocacy was not based on ignoring the difficulties. He considered several everyday ownership factors, including maintenance and operating cost, alongside the constraints of charging access, range and speed.

This is Steinmetz’s historical assessment as reported by IEEE Spectrum, not a modern, independently measured comparison. It nevertheless shows the practical questions that shaped early EV debate: how far a car could go, how quickly it could travel, where it could recharge and what it took to keep it running.
Did Steinmetz invent an electric car?
He worked on vehicle engineering, but the evidence supports a more specific description than “invented the electric car.” IEEE Spectrum says Steinmetz developed a double-rotor motor integrated into a vehicle’s rear axle. The arrangement eliminated the need for a mechanical differential or drive shaft. Dey Electric used the design in a roadster, but the car did not succeed commercially.

The reported price helps explain the challenge. The Dey roadster cost under $1,000, while a Ford Model T cost about half as much, according to IEEE Spectrum. That is a narrow comparison of reported prices and market outcome, not a complete comparison of performance, lifetime cost or specifications.
The Steinmetz company’s electric truck
In 1920, Steinmetz founded the Steinmetz Electric Motor Car Corp. The company demonstrated an electric truck in 1922. IEEE Spectrum reports a 52-mile range; recounting a contemporary New York Times report, it also says the truck climbed a 14.5 percent grade in 51 seconds.

The company’s plans were much larger than its output. It intended to produce 1,000 trucks and 300 lightweight delivery cars annually, but IEEE Spectrum reports that it made 48 vehicles in total. The demonstration and production figures show real engineering and manufacturing activity, but do not establish a commercially successful vehicle business.

Steinmetz’s EV story joins public advocacy, engineering and an attempt at commercial production. His forecast anticipated a large electric-vehicle market, but he placed it far too close in time. His reasoning about urban trips, charging availability, speed and range is still recognizable, though that resemblance should not be mistaken for equivalence between the cars, infrastructure or markets of his era and those of today.

For broader context, the Library of Congress guide to early automobiles places electric cars among the different kinds of automobiles developing alongside gasoline-powered vehicles and points readers toward digitized historic newspapers. Steinmetz’s wider engineering and electrification interests also appear in his 1916 book America and the New Epoch, cataloged by The Henry Ford; that catalog describes the book as addressing corporate socialism and universal electrification, not specifically electric vehicles.
