In November 2017, Chariot said it hoped to launch a public, bus-like commuting service in Seattle in the first quarter of 2018. Its CEO forecast around 100,000 riders by 2019 and predicted some form of vehicle electrification by that year. Those were ambitions, not confirmed results: the available reports do not establish that the citywide service launched as proposed, that it reached the ridership target, or that Chariot electrified its Seattle vehicles. Chariot announced its shutdown in January 2019.
What Chariot proposed for Seattle
GeekWire reported on November 21, 2017, that Chariot hoped to introduce a public commuting service in Seattle in the first quarter of 2018. Unlike a taxi or a fully on-demand ride, the proposed service was described as bus-like, with set routes and designated stops. Riders would finance the public service.

The proposal sat alongside a separate service Chariot already operated in Seattle: employer-arranged shuttles on custom routes. GeekWire said those vehicles were 14-seat Ford Transit Wagons, and companies could arrange employee trips from home or transit stations. Chariot’s founder and CEO Ali Vahabzadeh told GeekWire, “Seattle has the potential to be Chariot’s most successful market.”
Three Seattle services that should not be confused
| Service | Who arranged or paid | Routing | Purpose |
|---|---|---|---|
| Proposed public commuter service | Riders would finance it | Set routes and designated stops | Direct commuting |
| Seattle enterprise shuttle | Employers arranged transportation for employees | Custom routes | Employee trips, including from home or transit stations |
| Eastgate Ride2 pilot | App-requested shuttle service | On-demand within a defined area | Connect riders to Eastgate Park-and-Ride and onward transit |
The last of these was a bounded transit-connection pilot reported in 2018, not evidence that the broader citywide commuter service announced in 2017 launched as planned. GeekWire described the Eastgate service as allowing riders to request a shuttle through an app for trips to and from the park-and-ride.

What the 100,000-rider and electrification claims meant
Vahabzadeh forecast around 100,000 commuters by 2019, according to GeekWire’s 2017 report. The figure was a company expectation, not a verified rider count. He also predicted that “some form of electrification” would appear on Chariot vehicles by 2019, with an all-electric fleet as a longer-term aspiration. The reports available here do not confirm that Chariot met either target in Seattle.
A San Francisco Municipal Transportation Agency evaluation published in April 2018 said microtransit service representatives had committed to an electric fleet by 2019. That broader context does not verify Chariot’s specific Seattle prediction. The SFMTA also said more analysis was needed to assess microtransit’s net effect on vehicle miles traveled and traffic speeds.

What happened to Chariot in Seattle
TechCrunch reported on January 10, 2019, that Chariot was shutting down, with its Seattle enterprise routes expected to wind down by early March. The company said, “In today’s mobility landscape, the wants and needs of customers and cities are changing rapidly.”
The Eastgate Ride2 pilot had a separate timeline. Seattle Transit Blog reported that the service changed from Chariot to Hopelink in February 2019, and that the Eastgate and West Seattle Ride2 pilots ended on December 20, 2019. Those developments do not establish that the proposed citywide public commuting service ever launched.
