Charging a Dead Battery While a Relay Clicks Constantly: What to Do

Constant relay clicking during charging can signal unstable voltage, a weak battery, poor connections, or an incompatible auxiliary charging setup. Here’s how to check safely and what to test next.

If a relay keeps clicking while you charge a dead battery, stop and identify which relay is making the noise before continuing. The clicking usually means voltage or a control signal is unstable; it does not, by itself, prove the relay is bad. Turn off electrical accessories, inspect the battery and connections, and use the vehicle maker’s charging instructions. Stop if the battery gets hot or the charger repeatedly starts and stops.

What constant relay clicking means

A relay chatters when its control circuit repeatedly energizes and drops out. Voltage may rise enough to switch the relay on, then fall again below the level needed to keep it on. The underlying cause could be a weak battery, a poor connection or ground, or a relay-control problem.

The sound’s location helps narrow the possibilities:

  • Split-charge or auxiliary relay: A voltage-sensing relay may cycle if the sensed voltage is very low, its sensing earth is poor, or a smart alternator’s variable output is difficult for it to interpret. Rayne says a smart-alternator auxiliary-battery setup may need a battery-to-battery charger instead of a voltage-sensing relay: Rayne support guidance.
  • Starter solenoid or vehicle relay: Rapid clicking when you try to start commonly indicates the battery cannot supply enough current to crank. A starter fault can produce a similar symptom, so clicking alone is not a conclusive diagnosis: starter-relay symptom guidance.

In either case, the click is evidence of an unstable voltage or control signal—not proof that replacing the relay will solve the problem.

TowerTop 2/10/25 Amp 12V Smart Car Battery Charger, Fully Automatic Battery Maintainer with Engine Start, Auto Desulfator, Battery Repair, Winter Mode, for AGM, STD, Gel, Deep Cycle Batteries
  • Efficient, Energy-Saving, and Fast Charging: The TowerTop 12v battery charger offers 4 adjustable current settings (2A/10A/25A/AUTO) to meet your diverse needs. With a max charging current of 25A, you can fully charge a 100Ah battery in under 3.5 hours. Achieving an 85% charging efficiency (industry average 75%), this battery chargers is more efficient, increasing charging speed by 1640% compared to 2A car battery charger. Not only is it energy-efficient, but it also saves you a lot of wait time
  • Fully Automatic Charging for Convenience and Safety: This 12 volt battery charger automatically detects battery status and starts charging automatically within 30 seconds if you forget to press Start. After a full charge, it enters pulse repair mode, turns off the screen to save energy, and maintains a safe voltage for long-term storage. If voltage drops, it restores full power. The smart battery charger also remembers your last settings, ensuring seamless operation even after a power outage
  • All-in-One Compatible Design: Designed for 12V sealed lead-acid batteries in cars, boats, RVs, power sports, and deep-cycle batteries, including 12V STD, AGM, GEL, Wet, MF, EFB, calcium and deep-cycle batteries
  • HD LCD Screen and 8-Stage Intelligent Charging: With true 8-stage smart charging (desulfurization, soft start, bulk charge, absorption, analysis, repair, float, and pulse maintenance), it optimizes battery life and repairs batteries without overcharging or damaging them. The HD LCD screen allows you to view the charging stage and parameters at any time rather than leaving you guessing, keeping you informed of the charging status
  • Battery Repair: Independent desulfurization and repair buttons allow you to manually desulfurize and repair your battery to restore lost battery performance, helping to revive old/idle batteries and extend battery life. If your battery cannot be charged, you can try the "repair" mode to fix it. Note: It cannot repair completely drained batteries

What to do before and during charging

  1. Identify the source and reduce electrical load. Determine whether the sound comes from an auxiliary relay, a fuse-box relay, or the starter solenoid. Turn off lights, the blower, audio, and other accessories.
  2. Inspect the battery and wiring before connecting a charger. Do not charge a battery with a swollen or cracked case, signs of heat damage, or an electrolyte odor. Check that clamps are secure and look for corrosion, damaged cables, and poor engine or body grounds. DENSO advises inspecting and performance-testing the battery before diagnosing the charging system: DENSO battery-inspection guidance.
  3. Follow the vehicle’s charging instructions. Use the specified charging method and a charger compatible with the battery. Ford’s owner manual permits charging a low 12V battery with an aftermarket charger and says: “Do not switch on the ignition when a battery charger is in use to charge the battery.” See the Ford owner manual for the applicable vehicle instructions.
  4. Watch for signs to stop. Stop charging if the charger repeatedly starts and stops, the battery becomes hot, or voltage rises at each click and then collapses. Have the battery and charger checked rather than continuing to cycle them.

How to tell whether the battery, alternator, or relay is at fault

Test the battery first

Once it has been charged, have the battery tested using the vehicle maker’s performance or load-test procedure. A battery that fails the test, or immediately loses its charge, may need replacement. A battery that passes should not be treated as proof that the charging system is healthy; it is the starting point for the next checks. DENSO recommends a battery inspection and performance test before charging-system diagnosis: DENSO charging-system diagnostic procedure.

Check the charging system and connections

If the battery passes, inspect the alternator belt and its tension, fuses or fusible links, wiring, terminals, and grounds. High resistance at a connection can cause voltage drop even when components appear to be operating. DENSO’s general procedure checks charging voltage at the battery and alternator at approximately 2,000 rpm, gives 13–15 volts as a general reference, and cites voltage-drop targets of 0.2 volt or less. These are general test references, not universal pass/fail limits; the vehicle’s service manual takes precedence: DENSO diagnostic procedure.

Test the battery before condemning the alternator, and test alternator output only when the battery is charged enough for meaningful measurements. The vehicle-specific procedure determines the required conditions and acceptable results.

Check relay compatibility in auxiliary-battery systems

If the clicking relay is part of a dual-battery or split-charge setup, confirm that it is suitable for the vehicle’s alternator. Rayne’s guidance identifies a battery-to-battery charger as the system-level option for smart-alternator systems that a voltage-sensing relay may not interpret reliably: Rayne support guidance. This is distinct from diagnosing a conventional starter relay.

When to stop troubleshooting

  • Stop charging if the battery is physically damaged, becomes hot, or the charger repeatedly cycles.
  • Arrange a battery test if it will not hold a charge or fails the maker’s performance test.
  • Have the charging circuit checked if the battery passes but charging voltage, wiring, grounds, belt, or fuses do not meet vehicle-specific requirements.
  • For persistent starter-solenoid clicking after the battery and connections have been checked, have the starter circuit diagnosed instead of replacing parts based on sound alone.
