CDK Cyberattack: Why Car Dealership Outages Dragged On in 2024

The 2024 CDK Global ransomware-linked shutdown disrupted dealership sales, service, financing, accounting and integrations across North America. Here is what happened, what was restored, what data exposure was confirmed and what remains unresolved.

The June 2024 CDK Global cyberattack was a ransomware-linked shutdown of dealership business software, not an attack on vehicle computers. CDK supplied dealer-management software to approximately 15,000 dealerships across North America. When major portions of the platform went offline after incidents on June 19, dealerships lost or impaired access to systems used for sales, financing, customer records, inventory, service, parts, accounting, payroll-related processes, registration, and reporting.

Many stores stayed open, but operating meant paper forms, manual data entry, delayed deliveries, alternate payment and financing procedures, and slower service work. Core access returned in stages between late June and early July 2024; some integrations and ancillary applications remained impaired into July, with residual effects lasting longer for some dealer groups. As of August 9, 2026, the public record does not show the nationwide outage continuing. The continuing story is the data-breach litigation, insurance recovery, questions about vendor concentration, and the resilience of dealership technology.

The short version

CDK Global operates one of the automotive retail industry’s most important categories of software: the dealer-management system, or DMS. A DMS is not simply a dealership website or a cash-register application. It connects the workflows that turn a customer lead into a vehicle delivery and a repair appointment into a completed, billed job.

On June 19, 2024, CDK notified customers that it was responding to a cybersecurity incident and shut down significant parts of its environment. CDK briefly attempted restoration, then reported an additional cyber incident later that same day. It shut down again while investigating and containing the problem. The sequence left many dealers without their normal operating platform for days and, in some cases, weeks.

Public reporting described the event as a ransomware attack and attributed it to the BlackSuit operation, but CDK did not publicly confirm that attribution in the sources reviewed. Reports also said the attackers demanded tens of millions of dollars. A later blockchain analysis reportedly linked a transfer of approximately $25 million in bitcoin to an account associated with the ransomware group, but CDK did not confirm that the transfer was a ransom payment.

The operational outage and the data-breach question are related, but they are not the same claim. The outage was plainly confirmed. CDK later notified certain recipients that an unauthorized party had accessed and copied some files. That notice does not establish that every dealership’s customer database was stolen, or that all 15,000 dealerships and their customers were affected.

Why one software provider could disrupt so much of auto retail

Franchise dealerships typically run several connected processes through a DMS. The exact configuration varies by store and dealer group, but CDK’s platform could sit in the middle of:

  • Sales and customer relationships: lead handling, customer records, appointments, pricing, deal status, and customer communications.
  • Inventory: vehicle records, availability, pricing, acquisitions, transfers, and reporting.
  • Finance and insurance: sales contracts, lender and credit workflows, required disclosures, and F&I paperwork.
  • Delivery and registration: documents and connections used to complete a vehicle handover, registration, and related reporting.
  • Service: appointments, repair orders, customer and vehicle histories, warranty work, technician workflows, and billing.
  • Parts: parts ordering, tracking, inventory, warranty claims, and parts billing.
  • Accounting and administration: general ledger functions, store profitability, month-end close, employee compensation and commissions, and management reporting.
  • External integrations: links to manufacturers, lenders, registration services, payment systems, CRM tools, scheduling applications, reporting platforms, and other third-party products.

That architecture explains why a dealership could still unlock its doors and speak to customers while being unable to perform normal work. A vehicle sale is a chain rather than a single action:

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.
  1. A customer or lead is recorded.
  2. The dealership confirms inventory, price, trade-in information, and availability.
  3. Credit, financing, insurance, and contractual documents are prepared.
  4. Payment, registration, title, and manufacturer processes are completed.
  5. The vehicle is delivered and the transaction is posted to accounting and reporting systems.

CDK’s outage did not necessarily stop every step at every store. It made many of them slower, more manual, or dependent on another system. A dealership might agree to sell a car but struggle to produce all the documents needed to deliver it. A service department might accept a vehicle but have difficulty opening, tracking, and closing the repair order. A group might restore its core DMS login while its CRM, payment, scheduling, inventory, or reporting plug-ins remained unavailable.

CDK’s later filings and dealer disclosures show why the impact cannot be reduced to one nationwide experience. Dealer groups used different modules, integrations, backup systems, and business-unit software. For example, Asbury Automotive said its Koons stores used a different DMS and were excluded from the CDK outage. Penske said the effect was concentrated in its Premier Truck Group rather than its U.S. or international automotive dealership operations. A later federal order described CDK as having an alleged approximately 60% revenue share of the franchise-dealer DMS market; that figure came from antitrust litigation allegations, not an independently adjudicated market measurement.

CDK cyberattack timeline

Date What happened What it meant operationally
June 19, 2024 CDK disclosed a cybersecurity incident and shut down significant systems. After briefly attempting restoration, it reported an additional cyber incident later that day and shut down again. Dealers isolated or severed connections as a precaution and activated continuity procedures.
June 21–25 Public reports described ransom demands and a suspected ransomware group. CDK warned that recovery would take several days and later told dealers not to assume all systems would be live before month-end. Dealers used paper deal jackets, handwritten repair orders, manual inventory records, and alternate payment or financing processes.
June 24–30 CDK established a Dealer Resource Center with commonly used forms and documents. Core restoration began for major dealer groups, but recovery was not uniform. Stores could remain open while sales, deliveries, service, parts, accounting, and month-end close operated below normal capacity.
July 2–8 Penske reported core DMS functionality at affected Premier Truck Group locations by July 2. CDK expected dealer connections to be live by late July 3 or early July 4. Sonic and Asbury reported continuing problems, with Asbury saying all CDK functions returned at affected locations by July 8. Core logins did not necessarily restore CRM, lead, inventory, payment, scheduling, or other connected applications.
Late July and third quarter AutoNation reported that certain ordering, scheduling, payment, and reporting integrations were restored by the end of July, with residual effects resolved by the end of the third quarter of 2024. The crisis shifted from a broad platform outage to cleanup, reconciliation, integration recovery, and financial recovery.

Sources for the early outage and restoration sequence include TechCrunch’s June 24 report, Recorded Future News’ reporting on CDK’s recovery warnings, and CBS News’ account of the phased restoration. Company filings provide more precise dates for individual dealer groups.

What dealerships actually did during the outage

Sales and vehicle deliveries

Dealers did not all close. Many continued negotiating, taking deposits, accepting trade-ins, and completing portions of transactions. The problem was completing and recording the whole transaction efficiently.

Reuters reported that one dealership had sold nearly 100 vehicles during a sales event but had trouble formally delivering them because CDK-generated paperwork was needed for handover. That is the practical distinction between a dealership being open and being fully operational: a customer may agree to buy a vehicle while financing, registration, title, delivery, or accounting steps are delayed.

Manual work also creates a second wave of labor. Information written on paper must later be entered into the restored system, checked against payments and inventory, reconciled with lenders and manufacturers, and protected from loss or unauthorized access.

Service, parts, and warranty work

Service departments faced a different version of the same problem. Repair orders, service histories, appointments, warranty processing, parts ordering, and billing could all be affected. AutoNation reported lower repair-order volume and parts sales and said parts and service remained affected in July. Penske said its affected truck-dealer operations continued using manual or alternate processes.

For customers, the likely result at an affected store was a slower check-in, a request for information that the dealership normally already had, a delayed estimate, or a longer time before a completed repair could be billed and closed. The impact varied by the store’s local procedures and the other systems it used.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

Payroll, commissions, and month-end accounting

CDK warned dealers to make alternate plans for month-end financial close. Reporting also described disruption to compensation and payroll-related tools. The careful claim is not that every dealership missed payroll. Rather, commission calculations, accounting close, reporting, and related administrative work became more labor-intensive or uncertain for some stores.

Dealer groups had to preserve paper records, reconstruct transactions, calculate compensation through alternate methods, and reconcile the results after systems returned. Those tasks can continue after a login is restored, which is one reason a platform outage may have financial effects beyond the dates when the screen was unavailable.

Security precautions and impersonation attempts

Some dealer groups isolated their networks or severed connections to CDK while the incident was investigated. That can protect a local environment, but it also removes integrations that depend on the connection.

CDK also warned that people were calling dealerships while posing as CDK representatives or affiliates in an attempt to obtain unauthorized access. During a prolonged outage, an employee expecting urgent technical help may be more vulnerable to a convincing impersonation. A dealership should authenticate emergency support through a known channel rather than trust an unsolicited caller, email, or request for credentials.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

What car buyers experienced

There was no single customer experience, but customers at affected dealerships could encounter:

  • Delayed vehicle deliveries even after agreeing to a purchase.
  • Slower financing, registration, title, or final-document processing.
  • Rescheduled or slower service appointments.
  • Difficulty retrieving service histories or locating appointment information.
  • Requests to provide customer, vehicle, or finance information again.
  • Manual forms and longer waits while employees entered information into temporary records.
  • Follow-up delays as dealerships reconciled paper transactions with restored software.

The attack did not compromise the safety or drivability of cars already on the road. It affected dealership business systems. A customer whose car was already delivered did not need to assume the vehicle itself had been hacked merely because the dealership’s DMS was offline.

Customers should also be alert to phishing and impersonation. Do not provide a Social Security number, bank details, payment credentials, or account password to a caller claiming to be from CDK or a dealership unless the request has been independently verified through a known phone number or the dealership’s established customer channel.

  1. Industry forecasts: estimates made while the outage was still unfolding.
  2. Dealer-company disclosures: the reported effect on a particular public dealer group, often before insurance recovery.
  3. Final sales data: the number of transactions ultimately lost, delayed, or shifted into a later month.

On June 26, J.D. Power and GlobalData forecast that June 2024 new-vehicle sales could decline by 2.6% to 7.2% year over year, depending on how quickly systems returned and how effectively dealerships used workarounds. The analysts expected many delayed sales to shift into July rather than disappear permanently.

NADA later reported that Wards Intelligence estimated the incident cost the industry approximately 50,000 June unit sales, with many expected to be recouped in July. Cox Automotive likewise forecast that July would include tens of thousands of vehicles delayed from June and would show a rebound in the sales pace.

Those estimates do not mean the attack caused every difference in June sales. Inventory, pricing, financing conditions, incentives, customer demand, and ordinary market factors also influence sales. Nor does a June delay automatically equal a permanent lost sale.

Company or measure Reported effect Important context
Sonic Automotive Estimated approximately $30 million of pre-tax income impact for the quarter ended June 30, including approximately $11.6 million in additional compensation expenses. A later filing estimated approximately $0.64 per diluted share of second-quarter GAAP earnings impact and noted that integration problems continued into July.
AutoNation Estimated a negative impact of approximately $1.55 per diluted share for the quarter, before potential recoveries, and reported roughly a 5% decline in gross profit. It later reported that residual effects were resolved by the end of the third quarter of 2024.
Asbury Automotive Estimated a negative effect of approximately $0.95 to $1.15 per diluted share for the quarter. Asbury disclosed $15 million of cybersecurity insurance coverage with a $2.5 million deductible and said affected locations regained all CDK functions by July 8.
Sonic’s 2025 annual report Estimated that the outage negatively affected 2024 pre-tax income by approximately $47.2 million, including approximately $13.4 million in additional compensation expenses. The filing also disclosed insurance proceeds recognized in 2024 and 2025.

The figures above are company-specific estimates and disclosures, not a single audited total for the entire dealership industry. Insurance proceeds and the timing of delayed sales can also change the ultimate net cost.

Was customer data stolen?

Some unauthorized access to files was confirmed, but the public record does not establish that all dealership customer databases were exfiltrated. This is the most important distinction in the CDK incident.

What CDK disclosed

In a September 20, 2024 breach notice filed with Massachusetts, CDK said an unauthorized third party accessed its systems and obtained copies of certain files relating to CDK vendors or vendors of its corporate predecessor.

In the sample notice filed with Massachusetts, the affected information for that recipient consisted of a name, a business or personal address, and either a business tax identification number or Social Security number. CDK said it had no indication of identity theft or fraud related to the incident and offered affected recipients 24 months of single-bureau credit monitoring, credit reports, and credit scores. The Massachusetts filing is the key primary source for those details.

What lawsuits alleged

Consumer lawsuits alleged that broader categories of information could have been exposed, including names, addresses, Social Security numbers, driver’s-license information, credit-card information, and bank-account details. Those claims are allegations in litigation. They are not equivalent to a final CDK forensic disclosure establishing that every listed category was accessed for every person.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

It would therefore be inaccurate to say either that all 15,000 dealerships’ customer data was stolen or that there was no data breach. The confirmed public facts support a narrower conclusion: CDK later notified certain people about unauthorized access to certain files, while the full population and scope of affected records remained a matter of notices, investigation, and litigation.

If a person received a direct breach notice, the notice—not a general headline—determines what information CDK identified for that person and what monitoring or other assistance was offered. Anyone concerned about identity misuse should use contact details independently verified from the notice or the organization’s official website, and should treat unexpected requests for payment or personal information as potential fraud.

Who was behind the attack?

The certainty level differs by claim:

  • Confirmed by CDK: a cybersecurity incident, a second incident during attempted recovery, a prolonged shutdown, and later unauthorized access to certain files.
  • Strongly reported by cybersecurity sources and analysts: the event was ransomware and associated with BlackSuit.
  • Not publicly confirmed by CDK in the sources reviewed: the exact initial-access method, the complete scope of data exfiltration, whether CDK paid a ransom, the final ransom amount, and whether a reported bitcoin transfer was definitively CDK’s payment.

BleepingComputer reported, citing sources familiar with the matter, that BlackSuit was involved and that negotiations concerned obtaining a decryptor and preventing publication of stolen data. Recorded Future analyst Allan Liska also publicly linked the attack to BlackSuit. Bloomberg Law reported that hackers demanded tens of millions of dollars and that CDK was planning to pay, based on an unnamed source. CDK did not publicly confirm the payment in the sources reviewed.

A later Bloomberg Law analysis said a blockchain-security firm traced a transfer of 387 bitcoin, valued at approximately $25 million at the time, to an account associated with the ransomware group. That is reported forensic inference, not confirmation by CDK that it paid a $25 million ransom.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

BlackSuit emerged as a ransomware operation in 2023 and was reported to have links to the Royal ransomware operation. CISA has published a BlackSuit/Royal ransomware advisory. That advisory explains the threat but does not independently prove that BlackSuit conducted the CDK attack.

Why recovery took longer than a simple login restoration

There were at least four layers to recovery:

  1. Containment: isolate affected systems and connections so restoration would not reintroduce the threat.
  2. Core DMS availability: return the central applications used by dealerships.
  3. Integration recovery: reconnect CRM, inventory, payment, scheduling, manufacturer, lender, registration, and reporting systems.
  4. Reconciliation: enter paper transactions, verify inventory and payments, correct duplicate records, close repair orders, calculate commissions, and complete financial reporting.

CDK’s second incident on June 19 shows why a rapid restoration target can conflict with containment and validation. It is reasonable to infer that restoring systems before they are sufficiently contained can increase the risk of a repeat problem, but the public sources reviewed do not establish the technical cause of CDK’s second incident. That lesson should therefore be treated as an inference from the sequence, not as a proven explanation.

The result was a layered recovery rather than a single end date. Core access returned for some major groups around June 26–30; individual companies reported core restoration between July 2 and July 8; and integrations and ancillary functions continued returning later. A dealership employee seeing a working DMS login did not necessarily mean the entire technology stack was back.

What happened after the outage?

Consumer data litigation

Multiple consumer data-security lawsuits were consolidated as In re CDK Global Data Security Consumer Litigation, case 24-cv-5221 in the Northern District of Illinois. The latest public case summary reviewed listed the matter as pending. A pending lawsuit contains allegations and procedural developments; it is not, by itself, a final finding about the scope of the breach.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

That consumer litigation should be kept separate from claims by dealerships and other businesses that lost access to operational software.

Business-interruption and insurance disputes

A 2025 Travelers case alleged that CDK halted a dealership’s access to vital business-management software after the breach. The court dismissed some claims but allowed another claim to proceed at that stage. That proceeding concerns a particular business-interruption dispute and should not be presented as a final ruling that resolves every dealer’s losses or establishes the cause of the attack.

Dealer groups also disclosed cybersecurity insurance and later recoveries. Those disclosures help explain why initial company loss estimates may differ from eventual net costs.

Competition and data-access disputes

Tekion filed an antitrust lawsuit against CDK in December 2024 concerning alleged data-access and competition practices. It is related industry fallout, but it does not directly prove how the June 2024 cyberattack occurred or that CDK was negligent in the attack.

For readers assessing CDK’s present security posture, CDK maintains a Trust Center containing the company’s current security and certification claims. Those are company-provided descriptions of its current posture; they should not be confused with an independent public report that fully explains the 2024 incident.

Is the CDK outage still happening?

No—not according to the public record reviewed through August 9, 2026. The nationwide operational crisis was resolved in 2024. Major dealer groups reported restoration of core systems in late June or early July, and at least some groups reported that remaining effects were resolved by the third quarter.

That answer does not mean every dealership recovered on the same day, that every integration returned simultaneously, or that the event’s consequences ended in July. Litigation, insurance claims, data-security concerns, data reconciliation, and vendor-resilience questions continued afterward. The accurate description is a resolved 2024 outage with a continuing legal and cybersecurity aftermath—not a still-active nationwide CDK shutdown.

What the incident revealed about dealership technology

The CDK incident was a supply-chain and concentration event as much as it was a ransomware event. Thousands of independently owned and publicly traded dealerships depended on a specialized vendor for interconnected parts of the same business process. A compromise at that vendor could therefore produce operational effects across many businesses without separately compromising each dealership.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

There is no single perfect architecture. Centralization brings efficient integrations, standardized workflows, and less local maintenance. It also creates concentration risk: one vendor outage can affect sales, service, accounting, and reporting at once.

Using multiple vendors can reduce dependence on one provider, but it creates more integration points, more contracts, and more support complexity. Local backups improve portability and recovery options, but they create additional security, privacy, compliance, and maintenance responsibilities. Manual procedures keep a store operating, but they increase transcription errors, privacy exposure, reconciliation work, and employee fatigue.

Practical resilience checklist for dealerships

These are general recommendations, not claims that CDK or every dealer has adopted them:

  • Maintain tested paper and offline procedures for sales, service, parts, payroll, accounting, and month-end close.
  • Set explicit recovery-time and recovery-point requirements with DMS and other critical vendors.
  • Keep independent, usable exports of critical customer, vehicle, repair, accounting, and inventory data.
  • Test restoration from backups instead of merely confirming that backups exist.
  • Segment dealership networks and third-party connections so one vendor compromise does not become a total local shutdown.
  • Create an authenticated emergency communication channel for vendor support and outage instructions.
  • Train employees to resist impersonation attempts, especially requests for credentials or remote access during a crisis.
  • Review cyber, contingent-business-interruption, and technology-errors-and-omissions insurance.
  • Clarify data ownership, portability, breach-notification duties, audit rights, and vendor cooperation in contracts.

The key lesson is not that dealerships should abandon centralized software. It is that a critical platform must be treated as critical infrastructure: its dependencies need mapping, its backups need testing, and its offline operating plan needs to work before the emergency begins.

Frequently Asked Questions

Did the CDK cyberattack affect the cars themselves?

No. The incident affected dealership-management software and connected business operations, not the vehicle computers, safety systems, or drivability of cars already on the road.

Were all 15,000 dealerships and their customers affected?

No such blanket conclusion is supported. CDK served approximately 15,000 dealerships, but the effect varied by dealer group, module, integration, backup system, and business unit. Some stores used a different DMS or were outside the affected operations.

Was BlackSuit officially confirmed as the attacker?

BlackSuit was reported by cybersecurity sources and analysts as the ransomware group involved, but CDK did not publicly confirm that attribution in the sources reviewed. The exact initial-access method and other technical details were also not publicly established.

What should a customer do if they received a CDK breach notice?

Read the notice carefully to determine which information CDK identified for you and use the offered credit-monitoring services if appropriate. Verify contact details independently, watch for identity-theft or phishing attempts, and do not provide sensitive information to unsolicited callers claiming to represent CDK or a dealership.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: The CDK incident was a major disruption because a dealer-management platform connected many ordinary dealership functions, not because vehicle computers were attacked. Core operations returned in stages during late June and July 2024, while some integrations and cleanup lasted longer. A later CDK notice confirmed unauthorized access to certain files, but the public record does not show that every dealership’s entire customer database was stolen. The enduring lesson is the need for tested offline procedures, independent backups, segmented connections, authenticated emergency communications, and contracts that address data portability and breach response.
