CATL’s “1 km per second” claim refers to its April 2024 Shenxing PLUS LFP battery announcement: CATL said the battery could add 600 km of range in 10 minutes. Dividing 600 km by 600 seconds gives the headline rate. It is a company claim about range added, not a measured charging current or a guarantee for every car, charger, or driving condition.
What CATL means by “1 km per second”
On April 25, 2024, CATL unveiled Shenxing PLUS and said it could deliver more than 1,000 km of range, support 4C charging, and add 600 km of range in 10 minutes. The company described that last figure as “one kilometer per second.” The arithmetic is 600 km divided by 600 seconds; it is a distance-per-time equivalent, not a claim that the battery gains exactly one kilometer during every second of a charging session.

CATL’s announcement does not name a production vehicle or provide a full test protocol for that 600-km figure. The range and charging numbers should therefore be read as CATL’s announced performance claims, not as an independently verified real-world result. CATL’s Shenxing PLUS announcement.

Which CATL battery is the 1,000-km Shenxing battery?
It is Shenxing PLUS, the LFP battery system announced in 2024. It is not a blanket specification for all CATL LFP batteries, and it should not be confused with later products that share the Shenxing name.

CATL attributed Shenxing PLUS’s claimed range to a system energy density of 205 Wh/kg and changes to its cell materials and pack construction. The company described a granularly graded cathode, a 3D honeycomb-shaped anode intended to increase density while controlling expansion, and a single-piece casing with its module-free CTP 3.0 pack design, which CATL said improved packing efficiency by 7%.
For charging, CATL listed a lithium-ion conductive coating, transition-metal additions, nanometer encapsulation, higher terminal overcurrent capacity, heat dissipation, and a battery-management-system AI polarization model that adjusts charging current in real time. These are CATL’s explanations of its design, not independent assessments of the materials or proof that a vehicle will achieve the advertised charging result.

How the later Shenxing announcements differ
CATL has announced several generations and variants under the Shenxing name. Their figures use different metrics and conditions, so they are not a direct performance ranking or additional specifications for the 2024 Shenxing PLUS pack.

The announcements do not establish one shared test protocol across these products. Charging results can depend on the vehicle and battery configuration, starting and ending state of charge, charger capability, and battery temperature. Range figures also depend on the measurement convention: for example, CATL explicitly identifies the Shenxing Pro figures as WLTP, while the cited Shenxing PLUS announcement does not identify a vehicle test cycle for its claim.

Does the claim mean a Shenxing PLUS car will charge that fast?
Not on the evidence in CATL’s announcement alone. Shenxing is an OEM battery system, and the release does not identify a retail vehicle using the Shenxing PLUS pack or establish that a particular vehicle and charger can reproduce the 600-km-in-10-minutes claim. A battery’s advertised capability cannot be treated as a universal vehicle charging curve: the relevant vehicle, charger, temperature, state-of-charge window, and range-test basis matter.
CATL said in 2024 that it was building a Shenxing charging network and named Star Charge, YKC, and Shudao New Energy as partners. That does not establish which network locations support a particular vehicle or generation, nor does it make the battery’s peak claims available through an ordinary home charger.

- Established as CATL’s announcement: Shenxing PLUS was presented in 2024 as an LFP battery with more than 1,000 km claimed range, 4C charging, and 600 km of range added in 10 minutes.
- Not established by the cited announcements: independent validation of those consumer charging results, a common cross-generation test, or a named production car available to buyers with Shenxing PLUS.
- Important distinction: Shenxing Pro’s WLTP-based claims and the 2025 and 2026 Shenxing generation figures belong to different announcements and cannot be assigned to Shenxing PLUS.
