CATL and Changan announced a sodium-ion battery passenger car on February 5, 2026, with CATL saying it was expected to reach the market by mid-2026. That is a specific milestone: CATL called it the world’s first mass-production passenger vehicle equipped with sodium-ion batteries. The announcement does not, by itself, confirm that customers can buy the car today.
What vehicle did CATL and Changan announce?
The companies described a passenger vehicle using CATL’s Naxtra sodium-ion battery. Subsequent reporting identifies the car as the Changan Nevo A06, also known as the Qiyuan A06 in China; that model identification comes from secondary coverage rather than the cited announcement. CATL’s February 5 announcement said the vehicle was expected to reach the market by mid-2026.
As of October 8, 2026, the available information here does not establish whether retail deliveries began, the final price, which trims use the battery, or the markets where the car is offered. Treat the timing as CATL’s announced target, not proof of current availability.
What does “world’s first” mean here?
The claim is about a mass-production passenger vehicle equipped with sodium-ion batteries—not the first sodium-ion electric car of any kind. The International Energy Agency says a sodium-ion battery-powered electric car was introduced in China in late 2023. CATL’s distinction is the announced mass-production passenger-vehicle milestone.

The battery milestone came earlier: CATL announced Naxtra as its first mass-produced sodium-ion battery in April 2025. That refers to battery production; the February 2026 announcement concerns a vehicle equipped with the chemistry. CATL’s 2025 announcement and its 2026 vehicle announcement describe separate steps.
What range and battery figures has CATL reported?
CATL’s 2026 announcement gives an energy density of up to 175 Wh/kg for Naxtra and says the announced car has pure-electric range exceeding 400 km. The release does not provide the vehicle’s trim, test cycle, or conditions alongside those figures, so they should be read as manufacturer-reported claims rather than a directly comparable independent range result.

CATL also projects that future pure-electric variants could reach 500–600 km as the supply chain advances. This is a forward-looking company projection, not the established specification of the announced vehicle. CATL’s release presents the current vehicle range and future projection separately.
What does CATL claim about cold-weather performance?
CATL says Naxtra retains more than 90% capacity at −40 °C, provides nearly three times the discharge power of equivalent LFP batteries at −30 °C, and can supply stable power at temperatures as low as −50 °C. These are manufacturer-reported test claims in the February 2026 release; it does not provide a full independent test protocol or enough detail here to establish a like-for-like comparison across batteries.

For drivers, low-temperature discharge performance and usable driving range are not interchangeable measures. The announcement’s cold-weather claims do not establish how far the Nevo A06 travels in a winter road test, how quickly it charges in the cold, or how its range compares with a particular LFP model under matching conditions.

CATL says Naxtra remained free of smoke and fire and continued supplying power during crushing, drilling, and sawing tests. Those are the manufacturer’s descriptions of its tests, not independent validation in the cited material. They should not be treated as proof that the complete car is immune to battery damage or fire.

What should a prospective buyer verify?
Before treating the Nevo A06 as a purchasable option, look for a dated Changan sales announcement or official model page that specifies customer availability, market, battery-equipped trim, price, and the range-test basis. Those details are not established by CATL’s announcement. The battery-performance claims also lack the independent, like-for-like comparison needed to rank this car against a specific EV.
CATL CTO of its China E-car Business Gao Huan described the development as “the beginning of a dual-chemistry era.” That frames the company’s view of sodium-ion alongside other battery chemistries; it is not evidence on its own that sodium-ion is the better choice for a given buyer.
