iOS 26 makes CarPlay more glanceable and less disruptive rather than turning it into a completely new infotainment system. The update adds Apple’s Liquid Glass design, a compact incoming-call view, Tapbacks and pinned conversations in Messages, configurable widgets, and Live Activities on the CarPlay Dashboard.
These features apply to compatible standard CarPlay setups. They do not automatically add wireless CarPlay, upgrade a vehicle to CarPlay Ultra, or make every iPhone app available on the car’s screen. Availability depends on the iPhone, vehicle, display configuration, app support, language, region, and— for some features—carrier or manufacturer support.

1. The CarPlay interface gets Apple’s Liquid Glass redesign
CarPlay adopts the Liquid Glass visual direction introduced across iOS 26. In practical terms, this is a redesign of the interface and interaction areas rather than a new hardware platform. Apple says the changes make it easier to distinguish areas of the Dashboard and introduce a new tab bar for navigation within apps.

Liquid Glass also does not replace the car’s underlying infotainment system. CarPlay remains a way to present supported iPhone apps and information through the vehicle’s compatible display.
2. Incoming calls use a more compact view
One of the most useful changes is the compact incoming-call presentation. Instead of covering as much of the primary screen, an incoming call takes up less room, allowing important navigation information—such as an upcoming turn—to remain visible.
This is a meaningful usability improvement because a call alert is less likely to obscure the route at the exact moment the driver needs it. It is not a guarantee of safer driving, however. Drivers should still avoid unnecessary interaction and follow local laws and safe-driving practices.
3. Messages adds Tapbacks to CarPlay
Messages in CarPlay now supports Tapbacks, so you can respond to a message with a quick reaction such as a thumbs-up or heart instead of composing a longer reply. You can select the Tapback option in the CarPlay Messages interface or ask Siri to react to a message.
Tapbacks are best understood as a shorter alternative to dictating or typing a response—not as an invitation to browse through conversations while driving. CarPlay remains deliberately limited compared with the full Messages app on an iPhone.
4. Pinned conversations appear in CarPlay Messages
Conversations pinned in Messages on the iPhone appear in the Messages app in CarPlay. That gives you quicker access to frequent or important conversations without searching through the complete list.
How to use pinned conversations
- Open Messages on the iPhone.
- Pin the conversation you want to prioritize.
- Connect the iPhone to CarPlay.
- Open Messages in CarPlay and look for the pinned conversation.
The important detail is that the organization is inherited from the iPhone. There is no need to recreate the pinned list separately in the vehicle.

Other iOS 26 Messages features should not automatically be treated as CarPlay features. For example, conversation backgrounds, polls, and unknown-sender filtering are broader iPhone Messages changes; the CarPlay-specific documentation highlights Tapbacks and pinned conversations.
5. Widgets bring at-a-glance information to the Dashboard
Widgets are one of the most visible additions to the iOS 26 CarPlay experience. They appear in stacks to the left of the Dashboard, giving you selected information without opening a full app.
Possible examples include weather, reminders, flight information, sports scores, and similar glanceable data. The exact selection depends on whether an app supplies a widget that is appropriate for CarPlay. An iPhone widget does not automatically become a CarPlay widget.
Apple’s developer documentation allows app developers to provide widgets for CarPlay and to mark widgets as unsuitable for in-car use. That distinction matters: CarPlay is designed for information that can be understood quickly and interacted with minimally.

Configure widgets while the vehicle is stationary:
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap General.
- Tap CarPlay.
- Select your vehicle.
- Choose Widgets.
- Arrange or select the available widget stacks.
The number of stacks or widgets you can see depends on the vehicle’s CarPlay display. A wide display may show more information than a narrow portrait or split-screen layout.
6. Live Activities can appear on the CarPlay Dashboard
Live Activities add time-sensitive updates to the CarPlay Dashboard. Unlike widgets, which are persistent information panels that you arrange, Live Activities represent an event that is currently in progress.
Apple’s examples include:
- Turn-by-turn progress from Maps
- Live sports updates
- Food-delivery estimates
Third-party apps can support the feature, but they must implement Live Activities appropriately. The app’s activity also has to be allowed in the iPhone’s settings.

How to enable Live Activities for an app
- Open Settings on the iPhone.
- Tap Apps.
- Select the relevant app.
- Tap Live Activities.
- Enable the activity if the app provides that option.
Not seeing a Live Activity does not necessarily mean CarPlay is malfunctioning. The event may have ended, the app may not support Live Activities, the app setting may be disabled, or the app may not expose that activity to CarPlay.

Widgets versus Live Activities: what is the difference?

Does iOS 26 add CarPlay Ultra?
No. Installing iOS 26 does not turn a standard CarPlay vehicle into a CarPlay Ultra vehicle.
CarPlay Ultra is Apple’s more deeply integrated system. Rather than appearing only on the central infotainment display, it can extend across the driver’s other screens, including the instrument cluster. It can combine iPhone content—such as Maps and media—with vehicle information such as tire pressure and advanced driver-assistance information.
CarPlay Ultra can also expose vehicle functions including climate, radio, audio-system settings, and performance settings. Depending on the vehicle, these controls may be available through the touchscreen, physical buttons, or Siri.
Apple began rolling out CarPlay Ultra in May 2025, before the public release of iOS 26. The initial availability was associated with new Aston Martin vehicle orders in the United States and Canada. Apple also said existing vehicles using Aston Martin’s next-generation infotainment system could be eligible for a dealer software update. Hyundai, Kia, and Genesis have been identified as committed brands, but that does not mean every model or market from those brands supports CarPlay Ultra.
CarPlay Ultra also has a separate device requirement: Apple says it works with an iPhone 12 or later running iOS 18.5 or later. That requirement should not be confused with the standard iOS 26 CarPlay update.
On supported vehicles, the iOS 26 design direction also comes to CarPlay Ultra. The Ultra experience retains automaker-specific themes, customizable colors and wallpapers, and integrated vehicle controls.

Release date and compatibility
Apple released iOS 26 as a free software update on September 15, 2025. Before testing the new CarPlay features, update the iPhone to the latest available iOS 26 release. Apple’s support information reviewed for this guide lists iOS 26.3.1 as the latest 26.x entry; the exact current release may change as Apple publishes additional updates.
Apple says feature availability can vary by:
- iPhone model
- Region
- Language
- Carrier
- Vehicle and infotainment hardware
- App support
CarPlay itself remains vehicle-dependent. Apple describes CarPlay as standard or optional on many new cars from model year 2016 onward, while some manufacturers offer software updates for older vehicles. That is not a universal compatibility guarantee. Check the vehicle manufacturer’s documentation for the specific year, trim, infotainment system, and market.
What you may need for the connection
None of the iOS 26 features requires a new cable or adapter if the existing CarPlay connection already works. If your vehicle supports only wired CarPlay, a reliable replacement data cable can solve connection problems caused by a worn or damaged cable. For example, a replacement CarPlay cable should be chosen based on the ports in both the vehicle and the iPhone; it must support data, not just charging.
Drivers whose vehicles already support factory-wired CarPlay may also consider a wireless CarPlay adapter. This is a convenience accessory, not an iOS 26 upgrade. Compatibility is not universal: the vehicle generally needs factory-wired CarPlay, and the adapter must support that vehicle’s system. Verify the specific vehicle and connection requirements before buying.
Do not assume an adapter will add CarPlay to a vehicle that has no compatible factory CarPlay system. Owners of vehicles without CarPlay may need a vehicle-specific aftermarket installation, including checks for dashboard fit, steering-wheel controls, cameras, and other factory functions.
What iOS 26 does not add to CarPlay
- It does not add CarPlay Ultra to ordinary vehicles. Ultra requires compatible automaker hardware and support.
- It does not make every iPhone widget available. The app must provide an appropriate CarPlay-compatible widget.
- It does not make every app expose Live Activities. The app must implement the feature and its settings must allow it.
- It does not replace the vehicle’s complete infotainment system. CarPlay presents supported iPhone content through the vehicle.
- It does not make video playback appropriate while driving. Apple’s developer materials describe CarPlay video apps and AirPlay video for supported vehicles when parked.
- It does not make third-party wireless adapters official Apple features. These accessories have vehicle-specific compatibility limits.
Why a new feature may be missing
If widgets, Live Activities, Tapbacks, or the redesigned interface do not appear, work through these checks in order:

- Check the iPhone software. Install the latest available iOS 26 update, then reconnect to CarPlay.
- Check the vehicle. Confirm that the specific model year, trim, and infotainment system support the relevant CarPlay feature.
- Check the display. Some layouts and the number of visible widget stacks depend on the available screen configuration.
- Check the app. Widgets and Live Activities require support from the individual app.
- Check settings. Review the vehicle’s Widgets settings and the app’s Live Activities setting on the iPhone.
- Check region and language. Apple notes that feature availability can vary by region, language, iPhone model, and carrier.
- Reconnect and test while parked. Disconnect and reconnect CarPlay after updating, and configure settings only when the vehicle is stationary.
These checks cover the main evidence-based causes, but there is no single fix for every missing-feature report. Vehicle firmware, manufacturer implementation, app versions, and regional availability can all matter.
Should you buy a CarPlay accessory for iOS 26?
Usually, no. The iOS 26 changes are software features, so an existing compatible CarPlay connection is enough.
A replacement data cable makes sense if wired CarPlay cuts out, disconnects when the cable moves, or works only intermittently. A wireless adapter makes sense when the vehicle already has wired CarPlay and the owner values wireless convenience. Neither product is required for Liquid Glass, widgets, Tapbacks, pinned conversations, or Live Activities.
