CarPlay problems usually come down to one of four things: the wrong USB port or cable, incomplete wireless pairing, an iPhone restriction, or an infotainment system that needs to be restarted or updated. Work through the checks below in order, testing CarPlay after each one so you know which fix solved the problem.
1. Confirm that your iPhone and car support CarPlay
CarPlay needs a compatible iPhone, a compatible vehicle or aftermarket stereo, and availability in your region. iPad and iPod touch do not support CarPlay.
Also check that both devices are running current software:
- On the iPhone, open Settings > General > Software Update.
- Install any available update by tapping Download and Install or Install Now.
- Check the vehicle manufacturer’s website, owner’s manual, or dealer instructions for infotainment updates.
An up-to-date iPhone cannot compensate for an outdated or incompatible vehicle stereo.

2. Fix the wired connection
If CarPlay is connected by cable, start with the physical connection. A phone that charges is not necessarily making a data connection; some USB ports provide power only.
- Use the USB port marked with a CarPlay logo, smartphone symbol, or data-transfer symbol.
- Try a different USB cable.
- Try another USB port if the vehicle has more than one.
- Connect the iPhone directly to the vehicle rather than through a hub, extension, or unnecessary adapter.
For a USB-C iPhone in a car with wired CarPlay, use a direct USB-A-to-USB-C cable where possible. Apple warns that some combinations of a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter, cable, and vehicle system can interrupt wired CarPlay.
3. Check both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wireless CarPlay
Wireless CarPlay does not rely on Bluetooth alone. The iPhone needs Bluetooth and Wi-Fi enabled, and the car must be in its wireless or Bluetooth pairing mode.
- Open Settings > Bluetooth and turn on Bluetooth.
- Open Settings > Wi-Fi and turn on Wi-Fi.
- Tap the vehicle’s CarPlay network, or tap its Info button.
- Make sure Auto-Join is enabled.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay and select the vehicle.
If the car is not discoverable, open the vehicle’s phone or Bluetooth menu and select its wireless pairing option. The exact name varies between manufacturers.

4. Select CarPlay manually on the vehicle display
Some vehicles connect the iPhone but leave the stereo on its previous source. Look for the CarPlay logo on the infotainment screen, or change the audio source to CarPlay manually.

If the iPhone appears in the vehicle’s paired-device list but the CarPlay interface does not, this is often a source-selection issue rather than a failed pairing.
5. Make sure Siri is enabled
CarPlay uses Siri for voice control, and Siri must be enabled during setup. Depending on your iOS version, open one of these menus:
- Settings > Apple Intelligence & Siri > Talk & Type to Siri
- Settings > Siri > Talk & Type to Siri
- On older versions: Settings > Siri & Search
Turn on “Siri” or “Hey Siri.” If it is already enabled, turn the listening option off and back on, then restart the iPhone.

Screen Time can block CarPlay even when the cable, Bluetooth, and Wi-Fi connection appear normal.

This is particularly worth checking if CarPlay disappeared after changing parental controls, restoring an iPhone, or applying a Screen Time configuration.
7. Restart the iPhone and the vehicle
Restart both ends of the connection. Turn the iPhone off and back on, then restart the vehicle or infotainment system.

8. Forget the car and pair it again
If CarPlay used to work but stopped connecting, remove the saved CarPlay relationship instead of repeatedly trying the same pairing.
- Open Settings > General > CarPlay.
- Tap your vehicle.
- Tap Forget This Car.
- Restart the iPhone and vehicle.
- Set up CarPlay again through the vehicle’s USB connection or wireless pairing mode.
This clears the existing CarPlay pairing. It is different from merely disconnecting the phone.

9. Stop another phone from taking the connection
When several phones are paired with one vehicle, the stereo may connect to a different phone first. Temporarily turn off Bluetooth on the other phones, or remove them from the vehicle’s paired-device list, and then pair the intended iPhone again.

On the iPhone, open Settings > General > About > Name and use a name that is easy to identify on the car’s screen.
10. Update the vehicle’s infotainment firmware
The vehicle or aftermarket stereo may need a firmware update even if iOS is current. Check the manufacturer’s support site or owner’s manual for the exact process. Some updates install through a USB drive, some through Wi-Fi, and some require a dealer visit.
Do not assume that every vehicle uses the same menu path or update file. Use the instructions for the exact make, model, model year, and stereo system.
Common CarPlay symptoms and what they point to
| Symptom | Most useful checks |
|---|---|
| CarPlay does not appear at all | Confirm compatibility, use the correct USB port, select CarPlay manually, enable Siri, check Screen Time, then forget and re-pair the car. |
| The iPhone charges but CarPlay does not start | Try a known-good data cable and the CarPlay-capable USB port. Charging alone does not prove that data is passing. Avoid a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter combination when a direct cable is possible. |
| Wireless CarPlay worked once and then stopped | Check Bluetooth, Wi-Fi, Auto-Join for the CarPlay network, and the vehicle’s wireless pairing mode. If needed, use Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Forget This Car. |
| CarPlay connects but Siri does not respond | Check the relevant Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri settings, toggle “Siri” or “Hey Siri” off and on, and consider whether a VPN profile is interfering. |
| One app is missing | Only apps that support CarPlay are shown. Open Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Customize to add, remove, or reorder supported apps. |
CarPlay fixes that are often misunderstood
- Bluetooth alone is not enough for wireless CarPlay. Wi-Fi and Auto-Join for the CarPlay network are also required.
- Any USB-C-to-Lightning adapter is not guaranteed to work. The adapter, cable, and vehicle system can interact in a way that interrupts wired CarPlay.
- Siri settings are not always called “Siri & Search.” Newer iOS versions may place them under Apple Intelligence & Siri or Siri.
- Updating the iPhone may not solve the problem. The vehicle stereo can require its own firmware update.
When the problem is probably hardware
If a known-good iPhone and cable fail in the same vehicle, test a second CarPlay-capable iPhone if one is available. If neither phone works, the likely fault is the vehicle’s USB data port, wireless module, infotainment software, or head unit.

If your iPhone works in another CarPlay vehicle but not yours, focus on the vehicle side. A damaged USB port can still provide charging while its data pins fail. At that point, a vehicle service department or aftermarket stereo installer can test the port and infotainment system.
FAQ
Why does my iPhone charge but CarPlay not work?
Charging only confirms that the USB port is supplying power. Try a different data-capable cable and the vehicle’s USB port marked for CarPlay or smartphones. If using a USB-C iPhone, connect it directly with a compatible cable instead of relying on a USB-C-to-Lightning adapter.
Does wireless CarPlay work with Bluetooth only?
No. Wireless CarPlay uses Bluetooth and Wi-Fi. Turn on both in Settings, make sure Auto-Join is enabled for the CarPlay network, and put the vehicle’s stereo into wireless pairing mode.
How do I reset CarPlay without resetting my whole iPhone?
Open Settings > General > CarPlay, select the vehicle, and tap Forget This Car. Restart the iPhone and vehicle, then pair them again. This removes the CarPlay pairing without erasing the iPhone.
Why is one app missing from CarPlay?
Only apps that support CarPlay can appear on the vehicle display. To manage supported apps, open Settings > General > CarPlay > [vehicle] > Customize. Unsupported apps cannot be added.
The Bottom Line
Start with the connection type: use the correct data USB port and cable for wired CarPlay, or verify both Bluetooth and Wi-Fi for wireless CarPlay. Then check Siri and Screen Time, restart both devices, forget and re-pair the vehicle, and finally investigate competing phones or an infotainment firmware update. If two known-good iPhones fail in the same car, the vehicle’s USB port or stereo is the more likely culprit.
