For U.S. federal taxes, some taxpayers can deduct qualifying interest on a car loan for tax years 2025 through 2028. The annual deduction is capped at $10,000 per return and may be reduced when modified adjusted gross income (MAGI) exceeds the applicable threshold. The vehicle must be new to you, meet vehicle and assembly requirements, and be bought with a qualifying loan; used-car purchases and leases do not qualify.

What is the car loan interest deduction?

It is a temporary federal deduction for qualifying interest paid or accrued on certain passenger-vehicle loans. It reduces taxable income; it is not a tax credit, so a $10,000 deduction does not mean a $10,000 tax refund or tax reduction. The IRS says the deduction is available to both itemizing and non-itemizing taxpayers. It applies to tax years 2025 through 2028. IRS Topic No. 505

This article covers federal rules. State treatment may differ; state conformity was not established in the IRS materials cited here.

How much interest can you deduct?

The maximum deduction is $10,000 per year, per return. For 2025, the IRS Form 1040 instructions say the deduction is reduced when MAGI exceeds $100,000 for filing statuses other than married filing jointly, or $200,000 for married filing jointly. These are phaseout thresholds, not guaranteed deduction amounts: a taxpayer above the applicable threshold may still be eligible for a reduced deduction. 2025 Form 1040 instructions

The cited IRS guidance establishes that the deduction phases down above those thresholds but does not provide a formula here. Use the Schedule 1-A instructions for the tax year you are filing or tax software to calculate the amount; do not assume the full $10,000 applies if your MAGI is over the threshold. Later-year thresholds and instructions should be checked for that return year.

Does your vehicle and loan qualify?

All of the core tests matter. A vehicle’s model name or manufacturer alone does not establish eligibility; confirm the specific vehicle, ideally using its VIN.

Vehicle requirements

  • New to you in the tax-law sense: the vehicle’s original use must begin with you. A used vehicle purchase does not qualify.
  • Eligible vehicle type and weight: it must be a car, minivan, van, SUV, pickup truck, or motorcycle with a gross vehicle weight rating (GVWR) below 14,000 pounds. The IRS states this ceiling in Publication 6126 (January 2026).
  • U.S. final assembly: the vehicle must have been finally assembled in the United States. Check the vehicle information label at the dealership or use the VIN-based information described by the IRS, including the NHTSA VIN Decoder.
  • Personal use: the vehicle must be purchased for personal use. If it is also used for business, the interest may need to be allocated rather than claimed wholly as personal interest.

Loan requirements

  • The indebtedness must be incurred after December 31, 2024, to purchase the applicable vehicle.
  • The loan generally must be originated by you, with proceeds used to buy the vehicle.
  • The loan must be secured by a first lien on the vehicle.
  • Lease payments are not loan interest and do not qualify.

The IRS says interest on the refinanced amount of a qualifying loan is generally eligible, but refinancing rules can depend on the transaction. Check the instructions for the return year before claiming interest after refinancing. IRS Topic No. 505

How to verify final assembly

  1. Find the vehicle identification number (VIN) on the vehicle or purchase documents.
  2. Check the vehicle information label at the dealership or enter the VIN in the NHTSA VIN Decoder to review assembly information.
  3. Confirm that the particular vehicle was finally assembled in the United States. Do not infer eligibility from a brand’s headquarters or a model’s typical assembly location.

The IRS discusses vehicle eligibility and verification in Publication 6126 and its Working Families Tax Cuts individual guidance.

How to claim the deduction on a 2025 return

  1. Gather records showing the interest paid or accrued in 2025, such as lender statements, along with the purchase and loan documents and the vehicle VIN.
  2. Use Schedule 1-A (Form 1040), Part IV, as directed by the 2025 Form 1040 instructions.
  3. Enter the VIN on the return. If claiming qualifying interest for more than one vehicle, follow the instructions for reporting each relevant VIN.
  4. Apply the annual cap and MAGI phaseout using the instructions for the return year.

The 2025 instructions concern interest paid or accrued in 2025; do not assume those filing details automatically apply unchanged to later returns. IRS guidance says lenders and other interest recipients must report qualified-interest information to taxpayers, but transition relief applies to 2025 reporting. A missing lender form by itself does not determine whether you qualify; retain your own supporting records. 2025 Form 1040 instructions

What if you use the vehicle for both personal and business driving?

The IRS instructions distinguish the personal-use share from the business-use share. Qualifying personal-use interest may be considered for Schedule 1-A, while a business-use share may be deductible on Schedule C if it meets the rules for business expenses. The allocation depends on your facts, and the same interest cannot be deducted twice. For a mixed-use vehicle, keep records supporting the allocation and consult the relevant tax instructions or a tax professional if needed. 2025 Form 1040 instructions

Which tax-year rules apply?

The deduction was enacted for taxable years after December 31, 2024, and before January 1, 2029. The IRS’s current overview and 2025 filing instructions explain the initial claim process. The Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-39 publishes final regulations with an effective date of November 9, 2026; as of October 8, 2026, that effective date is in the future. Do not treat those regulations as already effective on that date. Internal Revenue Bulletin 2026-39
