Car Breakdown? Essential Steps for Emergency Vehicle Recovery

Move out of traffic if possible, use hazard lights, and leave the vehicle only when it is safe. Here’s how to contact recovery and wait safely.

If your car breaks down, steer out of traffic to the safest reachable place, switch on your hazard lights and decide whether you can leave the vehicle without exposing yourself to moving traffic. On a motorway or other high-speed road, do not attempt repairs or put a warning triangle in the carriageway. Follow the road authority’s instructions for your location.

What should you do first if your car breaks down?

Think first about other road users and your own exposure to traffic. If the car is still controllable, take the next exit or enter a service area if you can do so safely. If you cannot, stop as far from moving traffic as possible—in a designated refuge, emergency stopping area, shoulder or hard shoulder where available—and switch on your hazard lights if the vehicle is stopped in a hazardous position.

The UK Highway Code describes a service area as the safest place to stop on a motorway or other high-speed road; a hard shoulder offers less protection because it is close to fast-moving traffic. The right stopping place and procedure depend on the road and local rules. UK Highway Code, Rules 275–287; Queensland Government breakdown safety guidance

Should you stay in the car or get out?

Leave the vehicle only if you can do so safely. If you exit, use the side furthest from traffic, keep passengers together and move behind a safety barrier if one is available. Stay well clear of the carriageway and the stopped vehicle, which could be struck and pushed toward you. Do not walk along a highway or try to repair a vehicle stopped on a high-speed road.

If you cannot reach a safe place or it is not safe to exit, do not treat getting out as a universal rule. UK motorway guidance says to remain in the vehicle with seatbelts fastened and hazards on, and call 999 for police assistance when you cannot reach a place of relative safety or exit safely. Queensland likewise advises occupants to keep seatbelts fastened if exiting is unsafe. Follow the road authority’s instructions for your location. National Highways: Driving on motorways; Transport for NSW breakdown guidance

How should you warn other drivers?

Use the hazard lights. In poor visibility, the UK Highway Code says to use sidelights if possible. Do not walk into traffic to place or retrieve a warning device.

Warning-triangle rules vary. The UK Highway Code says never to use a triangle on a motorway; on other roads where placement is allowed, it specifies at least 45 metres (147 feet) behind the broken-down vehicle on the same side of the road. Hong Kong’s Transport Department says not to put a triangle or other warning object on an expressway or high-speed road. These are jurisdiction-specific instructions, not a universal rule for every road. UK Highway Code, Rule 276; Hong Kong Transport Department breakdown guidance

Who should you call, and how do you give your location?

Once you are in a safe position, contact your breakdown recovery or roadside assistance service. Use the emergency number for your location if there is an immediate threat to life or the local road authority directs you to call emergency services. Do not assume one country’s emergency number applies everywhere.

Give the operator the road name or number, direction of travel, nearest exit or landmark, and any marker-post or driver-location sign details. In the UK, the Highway Code also identifies a mapping app or vehicle SOS button as ways to share your location. Tell the operator about immediate danger and any relevant vulnerability, such as travelling alone or having a disability. UK motorway guidance recommends using a free emergency telephone when one is available; National Highways says to call the emergency number if it is unsafe to exit or a roadside telephone is not nearby. UK Highway Code, Rules 275–287; National Highways: Driving on motorways

Where should you wait for recovery?

Wait away from moving traffic and behind a barrier if you can get there safely. Keep children under control and follow instructions from the recovery operator or emergency responders. Do not return to the vehicle from a safe position on a UK motorway, even in poor weather, and do not attempt roadside repairs there.

What should you keep in the car before travelling?

Queensland and Transport for NSW recommend keeping a high-visibility vest and torch in the vehicle. Store them where they are accessible without reaching into danger, but remember that wearing a vest or using a torch does not make it safe to exit beside moving traffic. Queensland Government breakdown safety guidance; Transport for NSW breakdown guidance
