Canoo CFO Greg Ethridge and General Counsel and Corporate Secretary Hector Ruiz notified the company of their resignations on October 31, 2024. Canoo disclosed the departures in a Form 8-K filed November 5. The filing and contemporaneous reporting place the exits amid Oklahoma furloughs, operational changes and reported financial strain; neither the filing index nor the reporting cited here establishes why the two executives resigned.
What happened to Canoo’s CFO and general counsel?
The U.S. Securities and Exchange Commission’s index for Canoo’s November 5, 2024 Form 8-K identifies Item 5.02, which covers certain officer departures and appointments. SEC filing index, November 5, 2024.
TechCrunch reported that Ethridge and Ruiz gave notice on October 31. It reported that Kunal Bhalla, previously CEO Tony Aquila’s chief of staff, replaced Ethridge as CFO, and associate general counsel Sean Yan replaced Ruiz. TechCrunch also reported Bhalla’s base salary as $300,000. TechCrunch, November 5, 2024.
Why did they leave?
The available reporting does not give a reason for either resignation. TechCrunch said Ethridge and Ruiz did not respond to its requests for comment, and it did not report a named company representative explaining the departures. The fact that their exits coincided with other company changes does not establish a cause.

What else was happening at Canoo?
Oklahoma furloughs and operational realignment
On November 5, Canoo announced that it was furloughing 30 Oklahoma employees for 12 weeks. The company described the action as “as part of a broader realignment of its North American operations.” TechCrunch reported that Canoo had recently closed its original Los Angeles headquarters and was prioritizing operations in Texas and Oklahoma. These are developments reported at the time, not a description of the company’s present operations. TechCrunch, November 5, 2024.
Cash and borrowing reported in 2024
TechCrunch reported that Canoo had around $19 million in total cash as of June 30, 2024, including $4.5 million in unrestricted cash. The same report described October borrowing from a fund connected to Aquila at an 11% interest rate and a revolving credit facility with that fund. It also reported an additional $2.7 million borrowing disclosed in the November 5 filing. These are dated figures and reported transactions; they should not be read as current cash balances or financing terms. TechCrunch, November 5, 2024.

Supplier lawsuit allegations
TechCrunch also reported supplier lawsuits alleging unpaid bills. One, filed by Kistler Instrument Corporation, sought $56,000 in damages. That was the amount sought in the suit, not a court award or finding that Canoo owed the money. TechCrunch, November 5, 2024.

Canoo’s SEC filing index for a January 21, 2025 Form 8-K lists Item 1.03, “Bankruptcy or Receivership,” as well as Item 5.02 on officer departures or appointments. The index confirms that bankruptcy-related filing context followed, but it does not explain the proceeding or establish its outcome or current legal status. SEC filing index, January 21, 2025.
