The company called it the longest electric passenger-ship journey at the time, but the distinction has not been independently certified in the available event account. What happened on the Gothenburg-to-Oslo trip?
In an announcement dated 2 February 2026, ferry maker Candela Technology AB said its serial-production P-12 covered 160 nautical miles between Gothenburg and Oslo in three days. The journey included demonstration events and charging stops. Candela described it as the longest electric passenger-ship journey at the time; the event-specific account is the company’s own release, not an independently certified record report. Candela’s voyage announcement does not give a full stop-by-stop itinerary, individual leg distances, or weather conditions.
The 160-nautical-mile figure is the total route with stops, not the vessel’s range on one charge. Candela separately says the P-12 can travel up to 40 nautical miles at cruising speed on a single charge. The trip therefore demonstrates travel across a longer route using charging along the way, rather than a 160-nautical-mile nonstop run.
How was the ferry charged?
Candela says the crew used Aqua SuperPower stations on Sweden’s existing DC charging network and, where fixed charging was unavailable, a portable 360 kW Skagerak Energi Move DC charger paired with a mobile battery system. That system was towed behind a Ford F-150 Lightning. The company’s account presents the journey as a combination of network charging and mobile support, not as a route served entirely by fixed chargers.

Candela project engineer and voyage lead Gabriele De Mattia described charging access as a key challenge, saying: “Charging infrastructure is the hidden cost of electrifying conventional vessels.” The trip account does not list every charging location or explain how long each stop took.
What did the voyage cost in electricity?
Candela reported that the electricity used for the voyage cost just over €200. The company did not publish the underlying energy data, tariff assumptions, or a calculation that would allow the figure to be independently checked. It should be read as Candela’s reported voyage cost, not as a verified operating-cost comparison.

How does the P-12 hydrofoil work?
Candela says the P-12’s submerged, computer-controlled wings lift the ferry above the water at speeds exceeding 20 knots. By reducing the hull’s contact with water while foiling, the company says the vessel uses around 80 percent less energy than conventional vessels. That efficiency figure is a manufacturer comparison; the voyage account does not provide independent measurements of energy consumption for this trip.
The trip’s performance context is distinct from the ferry’s regular service figures. The Associated Press reported in October 2024 that the P-12 Nova entered public transport service in Stockholm with a designed capacity of 25 passengers, including one wheelchair space. AP described its cruising speed as about 25 knots and its maximum speed as about 30 knots; it also reported a 15-kilometre Stockholm route taking about 30 minutes. Those are Stockholm service details, not measurements from the Norway voyage. The Associated Press’s report on the Stockholm ferry also quoted city councilor Gustav Hemming saying the service was intended “to show the way in the green transition at sea.”

What comes next for the P-12?
In an April 9, 2026 announcement, Candela said Norwegian operator Boreal had ordered 20 P-12 vessels. The company said the first two were planned for delivery in 2027, with the rest expected in annual batches through 2030. This is a reported order and delivery schedule, not evidence that those vessels have already been delivered or entered service. Candela’s announcement of the Boreal order outlines the planned rollout.
