What changed—and when?
Tesla’s Q4 2025 investor update said the company was transitioning FSD (Supervised) access to monthly subscriptions as it began phasing out the upfront-payment option. Tesla’s update, published January 28, 2026, also said subscriptions more than doubled in 2025; it did not define the measurement in the cited statement.

As historical context, TechCrunch reported on January 14, 2026 that Elon Musk had announced Tesla would stop selling FSD outright starting February 14. The report put the recent U.S. upfront price at $8,000. Those are historical details, not a current purchase offer: Tesla’s support page is the source for today’s U.S. availability and price.

What does a U.S. subscription cost and how does it work?
Tesla’s U.S. support page lists the subscription at $99 USD per month and warns that price and availability may change. Do not apply that U.S. price to other countries; Tesla does not establish a single international price in the cited pages. Check Tesla’s FSD support page for current U.S. terms.
- Subscribe: Use the Tesla app or the vehicle’s touchscreen. To subscribe in the app, you need the Tesla Account that owns the vehicle. A subscription can also be added while ordering a new vehicle.
- Activation: The vehicle must complete a software update before the feature is available.
- Cancel: Tesla says you can cancel at any time. Access continues through the end of the current billing period, but Tesla does not refund or prorate the unused time.
Will your Tesla qualify?
Eligibility is specific to the vehicle. Tesla says the app will indicate whether the vehicle can subscribe and whether it needs a prerequisite upgrade, which may have an additional cost. Tesla’s subscription page says vehicles with FSD computer 3.0 or above can subscribe if FSD has not already been purchased, but the app is the practical check for a particular car. Tesla lists subscription availability in the United States, Canada, Mexico, Puerto Rico, Australia, New Zealand, the Netherlands, Lithuania, Estonia, Denmark, Belgium, Slovenia, the Czech Republic and Croatia. What happens to FSD when a Tesla is transferred or resold?
Tesla says its FSD transfer program is no longer available. The program may have applied to customers who took delivery of a new Tesla by March 31, 2026; a completed transfer stays with the new vehicle and cannot be reversed. Tesla’s transfer page has the program details.

For a used Tesla, the FSD status depends on the previous owner’s history:
- If the former owner subscribed, the new owner needs their own subscription to use FSD (Supervised).
- If the former owner bought FSD outright and did not transfer it, Tesla says the vehicle receives it.
That distinction makes it important to confirm the specific car’s software and feature status rather than assume that FSD follows every sale—or that it never does.

Is FSD (Supervised) autonomous?
No. Tesla describes FSD (Supervised) as an advanced driver-assistance system, not autonomous driving. The driver must remain fully attentive and ready to take over. Tesla’s support page states: “It does not make your vehicle autonomous. Do not become complacent.” A subscription does not change that responsibility.
Is subscribing cheaper than the old upfront option?
The old reported U.S. upfront price of $8,000 and the current $99 monthly subscription are not a like-for-like guarantee of value. A simple division would produce roughly 81 months, but that is only arithmetic based on those two historical/current figures—not a reliable break-even point. It ignores how long a specific owner will use FSD, whether the vehicle needs a paid hardware prerequisite, and the possibility that prices or availability change. There is no universal break-even period established by Tesla’s current terms.

Tesla also says some customers in certain states receive insurance discounts when using FSD (Supervised), and in some cases the discount can offset the monthly subscription. This is conditional, not a general benefit for every owner; check the terms applicable to your state and policy. Tesla’s Q4 2025 update additionally reported that customers in South Korea drove over 1 million kilometers using FSD (Supervised) in one month, without specifying which month in the cited passage.
