But images cannot confirm that every visible car was unsold, and the count was not a worldwide inventory total. Tesla’s disclosures show that its inventory measure later eased: the company reported 15 days of global vehicle supply for Q2 2026. Its Q3 2026 production and delivery figures are available, but its Q3 inventory-days figure was not yet released as of October 4, 2026.
What did the satellite images actually show?
The June 10, 2024 Futurism headline, “There Are Now So Many Unsold Teslas That You Can See Them From Orbit,” described imagery of crowded lots at Tesla sales centers and the Fremont factory. The article cited reporting by Sherwood News. A subsequent CleanTechnica account said Sherwood used SkyFi imagery and object-detection analysis and reported 465 Teslas at Chesterfield Mall in May 2024.

That is a reported count at one location and one time—not a count of Tesla’s global stock. The imagery reporting does not establish each vehicle’s sale status or how long it remained at the site. A car in a lot might be awaiting delivery or in transit; a satellite image alone cannot determine whether a customer transfer has been completed. Futurism’s original account and CleanTechnica’s account of the imagery work describe the reporting.
What Tesla’s Q1 2024 figures say—and what they do not
Tesla reported producing 433,371 vehicles and delivering 386,810 in Q1 2024, a difference of 46,561. The company defines deliveries as vehicles transferred to end customers with completed paperwork. The gap is a comparison of quarter totals, not a verified count of cars parked unsold at quarter-end: production and delivery timing differ, and some vehicles may be in transit or awaiting the completed transfer that Tesla counts as a delivery. Tesla’s Q1 2024 release gives the figures and definition.

Tesla CFO Vaibhav Taneja described the Q1 free-cash-flow impact as “an increase in inventory from a mismatch between builds,” and said the company expected that inventory to reverse in Q2. The remarks, reported by CleanTechnica on June 11, 2024, explain the company’s stated financial context; they do not quantify how many cars were physically parked at storage sites or establish why demand and production diverged.
How the reported inventory picture changed
Tesla’s own quarter-to-quarter figures indicate that the Q1 2024 buildup eased in Q2. The measures differ: production and deliveries are vehicle counts for a quarter, while days of supply is Tesla’s company-reported inventory measure.

Q1 and Q2 2024 figures are from Tesla’s Q1 release and its Q2 2024 update. Tesla said global inventory supply fell from 28 days in Q1 to 18 days in Q2; its Q2 update explains that its days-of-supply calculation uses trading days. The company also said inventory decreased by $1.8 billion sequentially in Q2 and contributed to positive free cash flow. These aggregate measures support the conclusion that reported inventory eased, but they do not show which specific cars moved or prove that every vehicle seen in a lot sold.
The latest complete inventory-days measure available as of October 4, 2026, is Tesla’s 15 days for Q2 2026, reported in its Q2 2026 update. Tesla’s October 2, 2026 Q3 release reports more deliveries than production, but it does not provide Q3 inventory days. The quarter’s production-delivery difference should not be treated as a physical lot count or as a substitute for that inventory measure.

Can you see unsold Teslas from space?
You can see cars gathered in lots in satellite imagery, and 2024 reporting identified crowded Tesla locations. But “unsold” is not something the image itself verifies. The imagery reports do not establish a worldwide total, while Tesla’s quarterly production, delivery and inventory figures answer different questions at a broader company level. The available figures do not establish how much of the Q1 2024 gap was parked, in transit or otherwise awaiting completed delivery.

The cited sources do not provide a verified causal breakdown of the Q1 2024 production-delivery gap. Tesla’s CFO attributed the cash-flow effect to a mismatch between builds and inventory, but the sources do not quantify the roles of competition, consumer sentiment or executive behavior. Those should be treated as analysis or opinion, not established causes.
