Canadian Tire’s general policy allows an unopened item in its original packaging to be returned with a receipt within 90 days for a refund to the original payment method or an exchange. The public policy does not set out a universal rule for car batteries, so whether a particular battery qualifies—especially if it has been installed or used—depends on its condition and product-specific terms. Check your receipt or contact the store where you bought it before making a trip.
How Canadian Tire’s general return policy applies
Canadian Tire’s Returns page says unopened items in their original packaging, returned with a receipt within 90 days of purchase, can receive a refund to the original payment method or an exchange. The policy also says opened, damaged, or non-resalable items may not qualify.
The public policy does not name car batteries as a blanket exception, but that does not establish that every battery can be returned on the same terms. Canadian Tire cautions on a Certified battery product listing that general return information may not apply to a specific product. Check the terms for your exact battery.
Return or warranty claim? Choose the route that fits

If the battery seems defective
Canadian Tire says defective products are subject to the manufacturer’s warranty and advises customers to contact the manufacturer or a local store. Warranty terms vary by model. For example, the Certified Group Size 34/78 battery listing specifies a one-year exchange warranty for that model only; it is not a standard duration for all Canadian Tire batteries.

MotoMaster’s Battery Limited Warranty brochure requires original proof of purchase and says replacement depends on testing that confirms a qualifying defect. It also says the battery itself identifies the applicable warranty period. These are MotoMaster terms, not terms to assume for other brands.

- Heat / Cold Resistance: The materials used in the construction of AGM batteries (such as glass fiber mats and specialized separators) have better heat resistance. What to bring and check before visiting
- Bring your receipt or other original proof of purchase. Canadian Tire says a receipt lookup may verify credit or debit purchases made within 90 days, but returns, exchanges, or warranty claims without a receipt may not be accepted.
- Have the battery’s exact model and brand available so the store can confirm the applicable return or warranty terms.
- If the battery has been opened, installed, or used, contact the purchasing store first. The public policy does not specifically explain how those conditions affect every car battery return.
