Five minutes can describe the start of a reaction or a quick demonstration, not a completed, quality-checked batch. EPA technical material describes biodiesel production as chemical conversion followed by quality-control testing before product release.
What the five-minute claim actually means
The phrase is best read as a claim about a brief demonstration of the initial reaction. A visible change in a mixture may illustrate that a reaction is occurring, but it does not establish that the result is finished biodiesel or suitable vehicle fuel. The account behind the phrase describes separation, purification, drying, and checks as additional stages; it is secondary-source context, not a validated production method. EPA describes biodiesel production as converting triglycerides in plant oils and animal fats into methyl esters, with glycerin produced as a coproduct. The distinction matters: vegetable oil is not biodiesel simply because it has been mixed or heated, and a demonstration is not the same thing as finished fuel. EPA’s technical material on biodiesel and renewable diesel production also describes quality-control testing before product release.
Reaction demonstration versus finished fuel

Why the oil or fat used can change the process
Feedstock quality affects downstream processing. EPA notes that lower-quality fats and greases can contain more free fatty acids. With alkaline catalysts, those acids can form soap, complicating processing and reducing yield. So a quick demonstration using one kind of oil cannot establish that another feedstock will behave the same way. EPA’s Green Chemistry Program nomination table describes this feedstock issue.

Why a quick demonstration is not a home-fuel recipe
Making fuel involves hazardous chemicals and controls that cannot be reduced to a short demonstration. The secondary account identifies methanol as toxic and flammable and alkaline catalysts as caustic, and discusses protective equipment and workspace controls. Those hazard descriptions should not replace chemical-specific safety data sheets, training, or a proper risk assessment. Goggles alone—or any single piece of equipment—do not make chemical handling safe.
This article does not provide chemical quantities, mixing directions, or an engine-use test. Anyone considering production needs authoritative safety information for the specific chemicals and equipment, current fuel-quality requirements, and suitable controls for ventilation, chemical compatibility, spills, storage, and waste. The cited material does not establish a current applicable standard edition or provide primary safety data sheets.

How to decide whether homemade biodiesel is ready for an engine
Do not judge readiness by color, clarity, settling, or a visible reaction. EPA’s description of quality-control testing before release is the relevant distinction: fuel intended for an engine needs appropriate testing against the applicable quality requirements. The sources cited here do not specify the current standard edition, a complete test protocol, or pass/fail values, so none should be inferred from this article.
