Why the recall notice—not the word “recall”—determines what to do
A vehicle recall means a safety defect or noncompliance has been identified and a remedy is being offered. It does not, by itself, establish that every affected vehicle must immediately be parked or that every affected vehicle can safely continue to be driven. The action depends on the particular defect, the risk described for the affected vehicle, and the manufacturer’s interim instructions.

Read the notice for your own vehicle and campaign. Look for direct instructions such as “do not drive,” “park outside,” or a restriction on who should ride in the vehicle. Follow those instructions while arranging the remedy. Do not assume that guidance for another recall involving the same make, model, or type of part applies to your car.
For US drivers, the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration (NHTSA) advises owners to follow the manufacturer’s instructions, including any do-not-drive or park-outside warning. If the notice does not tell you to stop driving, that is not a substitute for vehicle-specific advice: contact the manufacturer’s dealership to ask what the defect means for your car while the repair is pending and how soon it can be scheduled.

A do-not-drive warning is not a suggestion to drive carefully
If your vehicle’s notice says not to drive, do not drive it to work, to an appointment, or to the dealership. Stop using it and contact the manufacturer or dealership to ask how the repair will be handled and what transportation arrangements may be available. A warning to park outside also matters: follow the stated parking guidance rather than treating it as an optional precaution.
Do not reinterpret a clear warning as permission to make a short trip, drive slowly, or take a less busy route. The instruction is to stop driving until the specified remedy is complete. If you are unsure whether the warning applies to your vehicle, contact the manufacturer or dealership and confirm the campaign and remedy rather than guessing.
Do not generalize from a different campaign
In February 2026, FCA US issued a do-not-drive warning for specified Chrysler, Dodge, Jeep, and Ram vehicles with unrepaired Takata air bag recalls. NHTSA said those vehicles should not be driven until the defective air bag is replaced. That is a campaign-specific warning, not a rule that every car with any open recall must be taken off the road.
The example also shows why the exact campaign matters: make and model alone are not enough to decide what to do. Check whether the warning applies to your vehicle and follow the remedy and interim instructions for that campaign. A similar component or recall description elsewhere does not make the directions interchangeable.
How to check whether your specific vehicle has an open recall
Use NHTSA’s recall lookup for a vehicle-specific check by VIN or license plate. A broad search for a make, model, or model year can identify recalls that may apply to vehicles like yours, but it does not confirm that a particular vehicle is affected or establish its current repair status. Recall information can change, so check the vehicle itself rather than relying only on an old notice or a general search result.

- Find your vehicle’s VIN. The 17-character vehicle identification number is generally visible at the lower left of the windshield or on the driver-side doorjamb. It may also appear on your registration or insurance documents.
- Enter the VIN or license plate in NHTSA’s recall lookup. Review the results for open recalls associated with that vehicle. If you are checking by model or model year instead, treat the result as general information until you confirm whether the specific vehicle is affected.
- Read the campaign details and manufacturer notice. Identify the defect, the stated risk, any interim safety guidance, and the remedy. Pay particular attention to driving, parking, and passenger instructions.
- Contact the manufacturer’s dealership. Confirm that the recall applies to your vehicle, ask what precautions to take before the repair, and arrange an appointment. If the lookup and a notice appear inconsistent, ask the dealer or manufacturer to clarify the vehicle’s status.
NHTSA’s lookup is a practical way to check status, but the result is not a replacement for following the instructions in the manufacturer’s notice. The notice and dealer can address the campaign-specific precautions and repair arrangements for your vehicle.
Use the vehicle-specific lookup when you need to decide what to do now; a model-year search is useful for awareness, not a final answer about an individual car. If you find a recall, keep the campaign information available when you call the dealership so you can ask about that specific defect and remedy. If you received a mailed notice, compare it with the current vehicle lookup and ask the manufacturer or dealer to clarify any difference.

What to do after you find an open recall
If the notice says “do not drive”
- Stop driving the vehicle. Do not make a short trip to the dealer unless the manufacturer or dealer specifically tells you that is an appropriate arrangement.
- Call the manufacturer or dealership. Explain that your vehicle is covered by a do-not-drive recall and ask how to get the remedy completed without driving the car.
- Ask about towing and other transport. NHTSA has reported that manufacturers provided towing and loaner vehicles in some specific recall situations. Ask what help is available for your campaign, but do not assume a loaner is guaranteed: manufacturers and dealers are not generally required to provide one.
- Follow any additional interim instructions. If the notice also gives parking or passenger guidance, follow those directions while the vehicle awaits repair.
If the dealer’s first proposed plan requires you to drive a vehicle that the notice says not to drive, explain the warning and ask the manufacturer or dealership for another way to arrange the repair. The do-not-drive instruction applies until the stated remedy is completed.
When you call, useful questions include: Does this campaign apply to my exact VIN? What remedy is available, and when can it be completed? Should the vehicle remain parked in a particular place? Can the repair be arranged without driving it, and is towing or other transport available for this campaign? These questions help you act on the actual notice rather than rely on an assumption about how recalls are usually handled.
If the notice gives a different restriction
Follow the specific restriction as written. For example, if the notice says to park outside, arrange parking accordingly; if it limits passengers, do not carry the people the notice says to exclude. Contact the dealer if you are unsure how the instruction applies to your circumstances. Do not substitute advice from a different recall notice, even if the other campaign involves a similar component.

Read the whole interim guidance, not only the repair description. The defect and remedy tell you what the recall concerns; any driving, parking, or passenger direction tells you what to do while waiting. If part of the notice is unclear, ask the manufacturer’s dealership for an explanation specific to your vehicle.

Contact the manufacturer’s dealership promptly to ask what the defect means for your vehicle while you wait, whether any precautions apply, and how soon the remedy can be scheduled. The absence of a do-not-drive warning in a notice should not be turned into a blanket claim that continued driving is safe in every situation; the appropriate advice depends on the campaign and vehicle.
When you speak with the dealership, describe the notice and ask whether there are interim precautions beyond those written there. Confirm how to schedule the repair and whether the vehicle needs to be brought in or handled another way. Do not delay simply because the notice does not use the words “do not drive”: the recall still needs to be addressed, and the repair is available at no charge through the manufacturer’s dealership.
What the repair costs—and what transportation help does not guarantee
NHTSA says vehicle recall repairs are free at the manufacturer’s dealership. Contact the dealership to arrange the remedy and confirm the next steps for your specific campaign. A recall is not a reason to buy a replacement part or try to resolve the defect with a generic tool or accessory; the relevant remedy is the manufacturer’s recall repair.
Free repair does not mean every related expense or transportation need is automatically covered. NHTSA reports that towing and loaner vehicles have been provided in some specific recall situations, but a dealer or manufacturer is not generally required to provide a loaner. Ask what applies to your recall before arranging transport or assuming that a particular service will be supplied.

There is no need to treat a scanner, replacement part, manual, or accessory as a substitute for checking the recall or receiving the remedy. NHTSA’s lookup is free, and the manufacturer’s dealership performs the recall repair free of charge. If transportation is the obstacle because the notice says not to drive, ask the manufacturer or dealership specifically about the options for your campaign; availability in some recall situations does not guarantee assistance in every one.
Common mistakes that can lead to the wrong decision
- Assuming all open recalls require the same response. The recall label alone does not answer whether driving is allowed; the campaign’s interim directions do.
- Using a model-year result as proof about one car. A broad search can show that a recall exists for some vehicles in a range. Confirm your vehicle with its VIN or license plate.
- Driving a vehicle to the dealer despite a do-not-drive instruction. Call first and ask the manufacturer or dealership how the repair can be arranged without driving it.
- Assuming the dealer will provide a loaner or tow. Ask what support is available for the particular campaign; such assistance is not generally guaranteed.
- Applying another recall’s warning to your own car—or ignoring your own warning because another campaign had different advice. The defect and interim guidance are campaign-specific.
- Assuming a free repair means every transport cost is covered. Recall repairs are free, but transportation arrangements depend on the particular situation; confirm what help is actually available.
- Stopping at the search result instead of reading the notice. The vehicle lookup helps identify recalls, while the manufacturer’s instructions provide the interim guidance and remedy details to follow.
How common recalls are—and what the totals do not tell you
Recall totals show why checking a vehicle matters, but they cannot decide whether an individual car is safe to drive. NHTSA reported 997 safety recalls for vehicles and vehicle equipment in 2025, involving more than 29 million vehicles. In its 2025 release about 2024, the agency reported 1,073 safety recalls affecting more than 35 million vehicles and equipment, and separately said that more than 29 million vehicles were recalled in 2024. These are US agency figures, and their scopes differ: the 2025 total counts vehicle and equipment safety recalls and vehicles, while the 2024 release also provides a combined vehicles-and-equipment count.
The figures are a reason to check your own vehicle, not a measure of how likely a particular open recall is to make driving unsafe. Recall counts combine many different defects and remedies. They cannot tell you whether your vehicle is under a do-not-drive warning, whether it should be parked outside, or what precautions apply while its repair is pending. Only the campaign-specific notice and guidance for your vehicle can answer those questions.
NHTSA Chief Counsel Peter Simshauser said in the agency’s March 3, 2025 release: “Checking for recalls on your vehicle could save your loved ones’ lives or your own.” The useful next step is to check the specific vehicle and then follow the notice, not to infer a driving decision from the annual totals.
