Polestar’s newly announced Polestar 4 SUV could make the 4 line a more direct rival to the Tesla Model Y, but a like-for-like verdict is not yet supported by the available specifications. Polestar says the SUV adds practicality to the existing Polestar 4; its published US prices and EPA range figures, however, are for the coupe, not this new variant.
What Polestar announced—and what it could change
On July 7, 2026, Polestar announced a Polestar 4 SUV variant, positioning it as a more versatile addition to the existing Polestar 4 family. The company said sales were planned to begin September 2 and that the vehicle would be available to order in most Polestar markets. It is manufactured in Busan, South Korea. Polestar’s announcement lists up to 630 km of range under the WLTP test cycle for Rear motor variants and up to 544 hp for Dual motor models.
Those are global announcement figures, not US EPA ratings. The release does not establish US pricing or EPA range for the SUV variant. Polestar’s stated aim is to broaden the 4’s appeal with greater versatility while retaining its design and performance; that makes the SUV a plausible challenger to the Model Y, not proof that it will win customers from Tesla. In February 2026, Polestar described the 4 coupe as its current best-seller and said the new variant was intended to reach a wider customer base. These are Polestar’s listed US coupe specifications, not SUV prices or ratings. The rear-drive coupe has the longer listed EPA range; the Dual motor coupe trades some range for more power and quicker acceleration. Prices, offers, availability and range configurations can change. The announcement’s up-to-630-km WLTP figure and the coupe’s up-to-310-mile EPA figure describe different market and vehicle claims, measured under different rating systems. They should not be treated as directly comparable or transferred from the coupe to the SUV.

What the Polestar 4 coupe offers beyond range
For the US coupe, Polestar lists a 100 kWh, 400 V battery. Its stated energy consumption is approximately 35 kWh/100 miles for Rear motor and 39 kWh/100 miles for Dual motor. Maximum towing capacity is listed as 2,000 pounds and 3,500 pounds, respectively. Polestar says DC charging from 10% to 80% takes 30 minutes under its stated reference conditions. Polestar’s US overview lists a four-year vehicle warranty and an eight-year battery warranty. It also lists 12-year corrosion coverage, with regional variations. The company says the vehicle can use public charging stations compatible with CCS and NACS; NACS adapters are available for purchase through Polestar Service Points. That does not mean every Supercharger site, adapter or vehicle configuration is automatically compatible, so check local access and fit before relying on a route or purchase. Is the Polestar 4 better than the Tesla Model Y?
There is not enough matched information here to answer that fairly. The Polestar figures above are for the US Polestar 4 coupe, while the new SUV variant’s US pricing and EPA range are not established. Tesla’s official US Model Y page, as captured on October 8, 2026, showed 306 miles of EPA-estimated range for a Model Y configuration and a $63,630 starting price for Model Y L Premium. Those two figures do not make a matched trim comparison: the price is for a specific configuration, and the available page content did not provide a complete trim-by-trim comparison. A useful head-to-head needs the same country and model year, comparable drivetrain and trim, and prices stated on the same basis. It should also compare cargo and passenger practicality, energy use, charging access and charging time, towing, warranty and local service availability. A more SUV-shaped Polestar 4 may address buyers looking for a practical alternative, but the available figures do not establish that it beats the Model Y on those measures.
Can the Polestar 4 use Tesla’s charging network?
Polestar says the US Polestar 4 can access public stations compatible with NACS and that NACS adapters are available through Polestar Service Points. Treat that as compatibility information, not a guarantee of access to every Tesla Supercharger: the correct adapter and compatibility with the specific vehicle, site and region still matter. Check Polestar’s current guidance and charging-network availability for your route before travelling.
