About R200,000 can cover a reported off-grid solar charging system for an electric vehicle in South Africa—but it does not include the car, and it does not prove you will recover the cost or never buy petrol again. TopAuto reported an estimated R168,000–R211,000 for the charging system, on top of the vehicle. Treat “never pay for petrol again” as an aspiration that depends on your car, home, driving and energy supply, not a guaranteed saving.
What does the R200,000 figure buy?
The figure is for an off-grid solar charging setup, not the complete cost of switching to an electric vehicle (EV). TopAuto reported the system estimate in 2026, attributing it to ChargePoint and EnergyBee. Its article separately cited R339,900 for the Geely E2 Aspire, so using those figures together gives an illustrative purchase-and-charging outlay of roughly R507,900–R550,900 before other costs. That is arithmetic based on reported figures, not a quote or a complete ownership-cost estimate.

The reported system brings together solar generation, battery storage, an EV charger and installation or compliance work. TopAuto’s component ranges include R75,000–R95,000 for the array, R76,000–R88,000 for batteries, R12,000–R18,000 for the charger, and R5,000–R10,000 for compliance and inverter work. These are rounded estimates, and the article also discusses other system configurations; do not add the ranges as if they were a single itemised, validated quote. TopAuto’s article attributes its estimates to commercial providers rather than reporting independently verified installation prices.

The same report gives battery estimates of R4,500–R7,000 per kWh and mentions a lower-cost alternative around R2,500 per kWh. It also gives R76,000–R88,000 for an example 20–40 kWh battery bank and says cheaper storage could bring a total system cost to around R50,000. Those amounts reflect different assumptions and system scopes; they are not interchangeable prices for the same installed system. Can this setup really eliminate petrol purchases?
It can reduce reliance on petrol if you buy an EV and can generate and store enough solar electricity to cover both household demand and the driving you do. But the reported estimate does not establish a payback period, annual mileage, petrol-car comparison, EV lifetime or maintenance-cost comparison. It also does not show that every trip can be charged from solar. No evidence in the cited reporting proves that an average South African household will save money over the life of an EV.
Whether you stop buying petrol depends on your circumstances: whether an EV suits your routes, how much you drive, how much charging comes from your own solar supply, and what happens when the car needs energy away from home. An off-grid system sized for the house and car must also contend with changing weather and competing electricity demand. The headline phrase describes a possible goal for a particular household, not a universal outcome.

What determines the right system for a home?
Solar generation and household demand
TopAuto cited 5 kW as a minimum practical array size for a home also charging an EV, with installation estimated at up to R95,000. It also used 15–20 kWh of daily consumption for an example three-bedroom house. That is an illustration in the article, not an audited national average or a sizing rule for every property. A site assessment should account for your actual consumption, roof and shading, seasonal generation, and how much charging you expect to do.
Storage and inverter capacity
Battery capacity affects how much solar energy can be stored for use later, while inverter capacity determines how much power the home can draw at once. If appliances and an EV charger operate simultaneously, the system must be designed for that combined load. Compare usable battery capacity and inverter output—not just a battery’s headline kWh figure or a panel’s advertised capacity.

Charger rating and the vehicle’s limits
A wallbox’s rated power does not by itself determine charging speed. The car’s onboard AC charging capability, battery size, connector compatibility and the available home supply all matter. TopAuto’s simplified example says a 7 kW wallbox would take just under eight hours to refill a 60 kWh battery from empty, or about five hours over the 20–80% range. These are illustrative estimates, not guaranteed times for every vehicle or charging session.
The report says a 22 kW wallbox could charge some EVs with three-phase AC charging in one to two hours, but only if the vehicle can accept that rate and the installation supports it. A higher-rated charger may not make a compatible car charge faster. Get the vehicle’s AC charging limit and the home’s electrical capacity checked before choosing equipment.

How do off-grid and grid-connected installations differ?
Off-grid means the system is disconnected from Eskom; grid-connected systems operate alongside the electricity network. Eskom’s government-hosted guidance distinguishes the two and says embedded generation systems under 100 kVA must be registered, including systems that do not export electricity. The guidance also refers to applicable standards, engineer or technologist sign-off, and a Certificate of Compliance for internal wiring. Read the current requirements in Eskom’s embedded-generation guidance and confirm what applies to your installation before work begins.

How to judge whether solar charging could make financial sense
A meaningful comparison needs more than the solar-system price. Fuel prices change monthly and vary by grade and zone, while the value of solar charging depends on how much energy you generate and use. The Department of Mineral and Petroleum Resources’ schedule page listed prices effective 7 October 2026 when accessed on 11 October 2026; its page explains the monthly adjustment process and relevant price factors. Use the applicable dated price for your location and grade from the DMPR petrol-price page, not a past increase as if it were today’s pump price.
For a comparison that you can update, gather these inputs:
- Your annual distance and the fuel consumption of the petrol car you would otherwise drive.
- The local petrol grade and price, with the date and zone recorded.
- The EV’s expected electricity use for your actual driving, plus the share you expect to charge from solar rather than the grid or public chargers.
- The complete installed cost of the solar, storage, inverter and charging equipment, and any costs excluded from the quote.
- The comparison period and assumptions about system and vehicle life. The cited cost reporting does not establish these.
Keep those assumptions visible and vary them rather than presenting one exact lifetime saving. The figures available do not provide a like-for-like total-cost-of-ownership comparison, so they cannot establish which option wins financially.

What to ask before accepting an installation quote
- Is the quoted price for an off-grid or grid-connected system, and does it include all installation and compliance work?
- What are the array’s rated capacity, the battery’s usable capacity, and the inverter’s continuous output?
- Can the inverter handle the EV charger and expected household loads at the same time?
- What charging power can your specific vehicle accept on AC, and does the proposed charger match its connector and your electrical supply?
- What registration, inspection, sign-off and Certificate of Compliance steps apply, and who is responsible for them?
- What assumptions about household use and EV charging underpin the system design, and what happens when solar generation or stored energy is insufficient?
