The reviewed automotive guidance does not validate that liquid method. To check for a leak and identify where it escapes, use a cylinder leak-down test with the piston correctly positioned at top dead center on its compression stroke.
Why a leak-down test is the better way to check
Mobil describes a leak-down test as “a compression test in reverse”: compressed air enters the cylinder through the spark-plug opening, and the tester measures the pressure and air loss. With the piston at top dead center on the compression stroke, both valves should be closed. Listening for escaping air can help identify the leak path. Mobil’s leak-down test guidance explains the general method.
- Hissing at the intake or throttle body: may indicate an intake valve is not sealing.
- Hissing at the tailpipe or exhaust: may indicate an exhaust valve is not sealing.
- Air noise at the crankcase: may indicate leakage past the piston rings or through the cylinder.
- Bubbles in the cooling system: may point to a head or head-gasket problem.
These sounds help localize leakage; they are not, by themselves, a complete diagnosis of the failed part.
How to perform the check safely
- Use the vehicle’s service information. Follow its instructions for test setup, pressure, and interpretation. These details vary by engine.
- Position the cylinder at top dead center on the compression stroke. The valves must be closed. Incorrect piston position can produce a misleading result.
- Connect a cylinder leak-down tester through the spark-plug opening, following the tester’s instructions, then introduce compressed air as directed.
- Listen for escaping air at the intake, exhaust, crankcase, and cooling system to help identify its path.
- Keep the crankshaft controlled. Compressed air can rotate the engine if the crankshaft is not secured. The 2011 GMC Terrain procedure notes that holding the crankshaft balancer bolt may be necessary.
If you are unfamiliar with the setup or cannot safely control the crankshaft, have a qualified technician perform the test. The 2011 GMC Terrain 2.4L cylinder leakage procedure and the 2012 Ford F-150 5.0L procedure both use this intake-versus-exhaust air-noise logic.

How to interpret leakage readings
Acceptable leakage depends on the engine and test procedure. Mobil’s general guidance describes 5–10 percent loss as good-to-great condition, 10–20 percent as potentially serviceable with monitoring, and more than 20 percent as potentially requiring teardown; it also advises comparing cylinders. These are general guidance ranges, not universal limits.
By contrast, the 2011 GMC Terrain 2.4L procedure considers leakage above 25 percent excessive and potentially requiring component service. That threshold applies to that specific procedure; do not transfer it to another vehicle. Consult the applicable service information and interpret the reading alongside the leak location.

Compression test or leak-down test?
| Test | What it measures | Can it help locate the leak? | Equipment and scope |
|---|---|---|---|
| Compression test | Cranking compression in a cylinder; a low result can flag a problem. | Usually does not identify where air escapes. | Requires a compression tester. Follow the vehicle-specific procedure; the 2004 Dodge Town and Country manual page gives model-specific guidance and advises repeating an abnormally low reading. |
| Leak-down test | Air loss from a cylinder held at top dead center on the compression stroke. | Yes. Listening at the intake, exhaust, crankcase, and cooling system can help localize the path. | Requires a leak-down tester and compressed air. Pressure, setup, and acceptable leakage depend on the vehicle and procedure. |
A compression test can be a useful first screen for low cylinder pressure. If you need to know whether air is escaping through an intake valve, exhaust valve, rings, or toward the cooling system, a leak-down test is more informative. The 2004 Dodge Town and Country service-manual page illustrates why low compression should be evaluated using the applicable vehicle procedure.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. Why not use gasoline or alcohol?
Gasoline and alcohol are flammable, and the reviewed general guidance and service procedures do not validate applying either liquid to a running engine as a valve-leak test. No accuracy or safe operating procedure for that method is established here. Avoid treating an anecdotal liquid test as a substitute for a leak-down test, and do not introduce flammable liquids around a running engine for this purpose.
