France has a category AM route for light motor quadricycles from age 14. The French government describes a light motor quadricycle as a four-wheel vehicle with a closed cabin, no more than two seats, a maximum speed of 45 km/h and maximum engine power of 6 kW. The category and the vehicle’s formal classification matter: a small electric car is not automatically eligible just because it looks compact or has similar specifications.

Does the Citroën Ami qualify?
Citroën France lists the Ami with a maximum speed of 45 km/h, while the manufacturer’s technical sheet lists 6 kW nominal power and the same maximum speed. These specifications match two central limits in the French government’s description of a light motor quadricycle. Matching those figures makes the Ami a plausible example, but does not by itself establish that every version, registration or market qualifies. Confirm the exact vehicle’s formal classification and current specifications with Citroën or the vehicle documents. Model details and offers on Citroën’s product page can change.
What a 14-year-old needs before driving
- Meet the age requirement. The BSR/category AM route is available from age 14 in France.
- Have an ASSR or ASR for practical training. An ASSR1, ASSR2 or ASR is needed to access practical AM/BSR training. The school certificate is a prerequisite, not permission to drive a motor vehicle. Service-Public.fr explains the role of the ASSR.
- Complete the required AM/BSR theory and practical training. An ASSR alone does not complete the qualification.
- Check the vehicle category and insure it. Verify that the specific vehicle is registered as a qualifying light motor quadricycle, and arrange the required insurance before use.
For people born in 1988 or later, the French government’s guidance on vehicles that can be driven without a full driving licence says a BSR/category AM or another qualifying driving permit is required for a light motor quadricycle, and that the vehicle must be insured. Why the answer may differ outside France
Age limits, licence categories and vehicle classifications are jurisdiction-specific. The French age-14 route does not establish that a 14-year-old may drive an Ami or another compact electric vehicle in another country. Check the rules where the vehicle will be driven, including local licence or training requirements, vehicle homologation and insurance.
