A 17-year-old pedestrian, Caitlyn Dickson, was critically injured when a car struck her on Camfield Drive in Burswood on July 14, 2025. The driver, Chun Lai Yuen, later pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. ABC News reported on January 21, 2026, updated January 24, that he received a one-year-and-four-month prison sentence.
What happened on Camfield Drive?
Dickson was crossing Camfield Drive near the Crown Casino precinct shortly before 10 p.m. on Monday, July 14, 2025, when a black Honda Civic hit her. An ambulance took her to Royal Perth Hospital. Early reports described her condition as serious but stable after police had characterized her internal injuries as very critical. The road’s speed limit was 40 km/h, according to ABC News’s initial report.
The collision happened after an organised car cruise that ended at the Crown Casino car park. The initial report said the group had started in Jandakot. However, ABC reported at sentencing that Yuen was not part of the car club; the event’s context does not establish that he was a participant or organiser.
What did police allege at the time?
Major Crash officers charged Yuen, then 25, with dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm in circumstances of aggravation. At the bail hearing, police alleged he had been driving above 90 km/h in the 40 km/h zone; ABC reported a prosecution estimate of 96 km/h at impact. The prosecutor also estimated that about 200 people were lining the road and crossing. These were allegations and estimates reported at that stage, not the sentencing figures. WA Police Commissioner Col Blanch told ABC, “We are alleging excessive speed was involved.”

What happened in court?
Guilty plea and injuries described
On November 20, 2025, Yuen pleaded guilty to dangerous driving causing grievous bodily harm. ABC reported that the court heard Dickson had a fractured pelvis and elbow, tears to her bladder and spleen, and a torn aorta. ABC’s report on the plea records the court developments at that stage.
Sentence and driving disqualification
In its sentencing report published January 21, 2026, and updated January 24, ABC said Magistrate Robert Young sentenced Yuen to one year and four months in prison. The report said he would have to serve eight months before becoming eligible for parole, and that his licence was disqualified for three years.

The sentencing account placed the speed at 100 km/h in the lead-up to the collision and 85 km/h immediately before impact, in the 40 km/h zone. ABC quoted the magistrate’s reported finding: “the vehicle’s speed was 85 kilometres an hour just before impact.” These are sentencing-stage figures as reported by ABC, not the same estimate as the 96 km/h figure described at the earlier bail hearing. The account is a news report, not a reviewed copy of the sentencing judgment. Read ABC News’s sentencing report.
