BYD’s 5-minute fast-charging system can be as quick as filling up a tank in the narrow sense of time connected: BYD says a compatible China-market Han L can add up to 400 km in five minutes at a suitable Flash Charging terminal. The result is not universal: car, battery temperature, state of charge, charger and station access determine actual time.
BYD’s headline has also changed. The 2025 Super e-Platform claim was expressed as range added, while the second-generation Blade Battery announced in 2026 uses state-of-charge figures of 10%–70% in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes. Both are manufacturer-published claims, and neither should be confused with a guarantee for every BYD EV or public charger.
Key takeaways
- According to BYD’s March 2025 announcement, a compatible China-market Han L could add up to 400 km of claimed driving range in five minutes at a suitable Flash Charging terminal.
- BYD’s original Super e-Platform combines a 1,000-volt architecture, 1,000-amp maximum current and up to 1,000 kW of peak charging power; BYD also announced terminals rated up to 1,360 kW.
- The five-minute claim applies to a compatible vehicle and compatible high-power station, not to every BYD electric car or every public DC charger.
- BYD’s second-generation Blade Battery announcement in March 2026 used a different headline: 10%–70% state of charge in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes.
- Battery temperature, preconditioning, starting state of charge, station limitations, connector compatibility, queues and payment time all affect the real charging stop.
Can BYD really charge in five minutes—and is it as quick as filling up a tank?
Yes, but only under the conditions behind BYD’s claim. The five-minute figure describes the time connected to a suitable Flash Charging terminal, not the entire journey from finding an available station to leaving it. BYD’s launch material compared the charging session with a gasoline refueling stop of five to eight minutes, but the comparison is a manufacturer claim rather than an independent test.
At the March 2025 launch, Wang Chuanfu, Chairman and President of BYD Group, said: The ultimate solution is to make charging as quick as refueling a gasoline car.
The statement captures BYD’s objective, while the technical and practical limits determine how often a driver can achieve it. The relevant BYD March 2025 announcement identifies the Han L as the vehicle behind the original 400-km claim.

What did BYD’s 2025 Super e-Platform actually introduce?
BYD introduced a complete high-voltage vehicle-and-charger system, not simply a thicker cable or a software update. BYD said the Super e-Platform upgraded the battery, drive motor, electronic controls, power supply and air-conditioning systems around a full-domain 1,000 V architecture.
The Flash Charging Battery was described as having faster ion channels, a maximum charging current of 1,000 A and a 10C charging rate. Under the stated peak conditions, 1,000 V multiplied by 1,000 A equals 1,000 kW, or 1 MW. That is why BYD calls the system megawatt charging. The technical launch announcement also describes BYD-developed liquid-cooled Flash Charging terminals rated up to 1,360 kW.
The charger rating and the vehicle rating are related but not identical. A terminal capable of up to 1,360 kW does not mean every vehicle connected to it will draw 1,360 kW. The car’s battery, charging electronics, temperature, state of charge and the station’s operating conditions still determine the power delivered.
How do dual-gun charging and intelligent boosting help?
BYD’s China announcement described two features intended to make the system more usable: dual-gun charging can combine charging equipment, while intelligent boosting is intended to help equipped vehicles use public fast-charging infrastructure that does not offer the full megawatt output. Neither feature turns an ordinary charger into a 1 MW charger.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThese features address two different problems. Dual-gun charging is about obtaining more electrical power by combining equipment where the vehicle and station support that arrangement. Intelligent boosting is about compatibility with some lower-capability public infrastructure. The BYD China technical announcement describes both features, but it does not support assuming that every public station can reproduce the launch result.
Does BYD add 400 km in five minutes?
BYD says the compatible Han L can add up to 400 km of driving range in five minutes at a suitable Flash Charging terminal. BYD also expressed the headline rate as two kilometres of range per second. Both figures describe the 2025 claim and should be read as maximum manufacturer-published claims, not as a guaranteed constant charging rate.

Range added is not the same measurement as battery percentage. The number of kilometres represented by a given amount of electricity depends on the vehicle’s efficiency, battery size, speed, weather and test conditions. A larger or less efficient vehicle may gain fewer kilometres from the same energy than a smaller, more efficient vehicle, even if both cars receive the same electrical power.
Charging power also normally changes during a session. Battery state of charge and temperature affect the rate, and a station may have its own power limits or sharing arrangements. BYD’s owner documentation refers to preconditioning before arrival at a megawatt charging terminal, which reinforces that the five-minute result depends on operating conditions rather than on a fixed 1 MW supply for every second.
What is the difference between BYD’s 2025 and 2026 fast-charging claims?
BYD’s 2025 claim is expressed as driving range added, while BYD’s 2026 claim is expressed as a change in battery state of charge. The two claims should not be combined or presented as though they describe the same test.
| System and announcement | Headline claim | What the figure measures | Vehicle or market context |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2025 Super e-Platform | Up to 400 km in five minutes | Claimed driving range added | China-market Han L; suitable Flash Charging terminal |
| 2025 Super e-Platform hardware | 1,000 V, 1,000 A and up to 1,000 kW peak | Vehicle-side electrical and charging capability | BYD also announced terminals up to 1,360 kW |
| 2026 second-generation Blade Battery | 10%–70% in five minutes | State-of-charge increase | BYD’s March 2026 technology announcement |
| 2026 second-generation Blade Battery | 10%–97% in nine minutes | State-of-charge increase | Later Flash Charging headline; not a 400-km range claim |
| 2026 DENZA Z9GT announcement | 10%–70% in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes | State-of-charge increase | European Flash Charging vehicle announcement; up to 1,500 kW charging was described |
According to BYD’s March 2026 second-generation Blade Battery announcement, the newer system reaches 10%–70% in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes. The DENZA Z9GT European announcement repeats those state-of-charge figures and describes charging capability of up to 1,500 kW. Those later numbers do not prove that the vehicle adds 400 km in five minutes, because the distance represented by 60 or 87 percentage points varies by vehicle efficiency, usable battery capacity and conditions.
Is BYD Flash Charging as quick as filling a gasoline tank?
For the physical charging transaction, BYD has narrowed the gap with gasoline refueling. For the complete travel experience, the answer is less certain because a fast charging stop includes station discovery, access, authentication, parking, connector handling and possible queuing.
| Comparison point | Gasoline refueling | BYD Flash Charging |
|---|---|---|
| Published session comparison | BYD’s 2025 launch material used five to eight minutes for a gasoline refueling stop | BYD claimed up to five minutes for the original compatible Han L range result |
| What is added | Fuel, with the vehicle’s usable range determined by the tank and efficiency | Up to 400 km of claimed range in the 2025 Han L example, or a stated battery-percentage gain in the 2026 claims |
| Vehicle requirement | A compatible gasoline vehicle and pump | A Flash Charging-capable BYD or DENZA vehicle with the required battery and charging electronics |
| Station requirement | A gasoline pump with available fuel | A suitable high-power Flash Charging terminal; an ordinary public charger does not provide the same result |
| Journey friction | Finding a station, joining a queue and paying still take time | Finding a compatible open station, waiting, authenticating, charging and returning to the route still take time |
The fairest verdict is therefore conditional: BYD can make the connected charging session comparable to a gasoline refueling stop when the right vehicle reaches the right terminal in the right condition. BYD has not made the entire charging journey universally equivalent to gasoline, because infrastructure access remains as important as peak charging power.

Which BYD cars support Flash Charging?
The original 2025 launch identified the China-market Han L and Tang L as the first vehicles for the Super e-Platform. BYD later identified the DENZA Z9GT as a European Flash Charging vehicle. These announcements do not establish that every trim, battery version or BYD model in every country supports the headline rate.
| Vehicle | Evidence in BYD announcements | Geography or timing limitation | What a buyer should verify |
|---|---|---|---|
| BYD Han L | Original 400-km-in-five-minutes example | China-market launch vehicle | Exact trim, battery, connector and local station access |
| BYD Tang L | Named with the Han L as an initial Super e-Platform vehicle | China-market launch vehicle | Exact trim, battery, connector and local station access |
| DENZA Z9GT | European Flash Charging vehicle announced with 10%–70% in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes | European rollout announcement; local retail and station timing are market-specific | Country-specific model specification, station availability and approval |
| Other BYD EVs | No universal 1 MW support established by the researched announcements | Model and market availability varies | Manufacturer charging specification and the local owner manual |
For readers comparing BYD Han L, BYD Tang L, and DENZA Z9GT, the model name alone is not enough. The vehicle must have the relevant battery, thermal management and charging electronics, and the local charging network must support the required connector and power level. BYD’s original launch announcement is the appropriate source for the initial Han L and Tang L pairing, while the later European announcement is the source for the DENZA Z9GT claim.
Does every BYD EV support 1 MW charging? No. The researched announcements establish a vehicle-specific system, and an ordinary BYD EV should not be assumed to accept 1 MW merely because it carries the BYD badge.
Does cold weather slow BYD Flash Charging?
Cold conditions can matter, but BYD’s second-generation announcement made a separate cold-weather claim rather than proving that every Flash Charging session is unaffected by temperature. BYD said that moving from 20% to 97% state of charge at −30 °C required only three extra minutes compared with its stated normal-temperature result.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesFind Drivers →Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFix Now →The comparison needs careful wording because the 2026 headline normal-temperature figure is 10%–97% in nine minutes, while the cold-weather statement begins at 20%. The cold claim therefore should not be rewritten as a universal nine-minute result at −30 °C. It is a specific BYD comparison for the newer technology.
For the 2025 system, BYD’s owner documentation refers to preconditioning before reaching a megawatt charging terminal. Drivers should follow the charging instructions for the exact vehicle rather than assuming that a battery arrives at the ideal temperature automatically. The relevant BYD Han Ultra EV owner manual and BYD Han L EV owner manual are more useful for vehicle-specific charging behavior than a generic claim about the BYD brand.

Where can drivers find a BYD megawatt charger?
BYD has announced substantial Chinese infrastructure plans and a European rollout, but the announcements do not justify treating those figures as a worldwide consumer network.
| Region or plan | Announced figure | Status and limitation |
|---|---|---|
| China, 2025 | More than 500 megawatt Flash Charging stations across more than 200 core cities | BYD announcement figure; not a global or U.S. count |
| China, planned BYD buildout | 4,000 self-built stations | Announced plan, not evidence that all planned sites were operating |
| China, ecosystem cooperation | 15,000 additional charging piles through Xiaojü Charging and Xindetu | Announced cooperation; pile count is not the same as 15,000 1 MW stations |
| Europe, IAA Mobility 2025 | 200–300 stations planned by Q2 2026 | Deployment plan; DENZA was identified as the lead brand |
| United States | No definitive consumer availability figure established in the researched sources | Check current BYD/DENZA retail specifications, local approvals and charging operators |
According to BYD’s June 2025 China charging-ecosystem announcement, more than 500 megawatt Flash Charging stations had been built across more than 200 core Chinese cities, with plans for 4,000 self-built stations and cooperation intended to add 15,000 charging piles through Xiaojü Charging and Xindetu. Those figures describe BYD’s China announcement and should not be transferred to Europe or the United States.
For Europe, BYD announced at IAA Mobility 2025 that 200–300 Flash Charging stations were planned by Q2 2026, with DENZA as the lead brand. The IAA Mobility announcement describes the plan, not a guarantee that a station is open in a particular country, on a particular route or for a particular vehicle.
BYD’s March 2026 DENZA announcement said the Z9GT would begin the European Flash Charging rollout in April. The supplied official sources do not establish a definitive, current consumer-availability answer for the United States, and retail models, connectors, station operators and local approvals remain geography-specific.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What cable do you need for BYD Flash Charging?
Buyer warning: A generic EV charging cable does not create 1 MW charging. The five-minute result depends on the vehicle’s battery, thermal system, charging electronics, connector arrangement and the terminal itself. The researched sources do not establish that a generic aftermarket cable is compatible with the China-market Han L, Tang L or European DENZA systems.
At a public high-power station, the cable may be part of the terminal arrangement, and the correct connector and charging procedure depend on the vehicle and market. Before buying an accessory, confirm the exact vehicle manual, local connector standard and station requirements. A cable can be useful for ordinary charging, but it is not a substitute for a Flash Charging-capable vehicle and megawatt-capable infrastructure.

How should a driver judge the five-minute claim in practice?
Use the following checklist before treating an advertised charging time as a likely stop time:
- Confirm vehicle eligibility. Check the exact model, trim and battery rather than relying on the BYD brand name.
- Confirm the market. The original Han L and Tang L claims were tied to China, while the DENZA Z9GT announcement concerns Europe. A specification in one region does not prove availability in another.
- Find the right station. Look for a compatible Flash Charging terminal, not merely any public DC charger. Check whether the station is open, operational and accessible to the vehicle.
- Arrive with the battery prepared. Follow the owner manual’s preconditioning instructions, especially in cold weather or before a high-power charging stop.
- Separate energy from range. Compare state-of-charge percentages within the same vehicle; compare kilometres of range only when the vehicle, efficiency and test conditions are also clear.
- Allow for non-charging time. Include route detours, station access, authentication, payment, queues, parking and connector handling.
- Read “up to” as a ceiling. Peak power is not necessarily sustained throughout the session, and the station may limit output.
A useful comparison framework is session duration, energy or range added, infrastructure availability, vehicle eligibility, temperature and starting state of charge, then total trip friction. Looking only at the largest kilowatt number produces the least reliable real-world comparison.
What is the final verdict on BYD’s five-minute charging?
BYD’s technology is credible as a high-end vehicle-and-charger capability: the company has published a 1,000 V, 1,000 A, 1 MW Super e-Platform and a Han L claim of up to 400 km added in five minutes. BYD’s newer 2026 system has a separate 10%–70% five-minute and 10%–97% nine-minute headline.
Those claims do not mean that every BYD EV can charge in five minutes, that every public charger can deliver 1 MW, or that the full travel stop always matches a gasoline refueling stop. The practical answer is conditional: when the compatible car, prepared battery and suitable high-power station are all available, BYD has substantially narrowed the charging-session gap with filling a tank. Infrastructure access still decides whether the benefit is available on a real journey.

Frequently Asked Questions
Does every BYD EV support five-minute Flash Charging?
BYD’s five-minute claim applies to compatible vehicles at suitable Flash Charging terminals, not to every BYD electric car. The 2025 Han L claim was up to 400 km of range in five minutes, while the newer 2026 claim is expressed as 10%–70% state of charge in five minutes.
What cable do I need for BYD Flash Charging?
A generic EV charging cable cannot create 1 MW charging. BYD Flash Charging requires a compatible vehicle, battery, charging electronics, connector arrangement and suitable high-power terminal; the supplied research does not establish a generic aftermarket cable as compatible with the relevant BYD or DENZA systems.
Does cold weather slow BYD Flash Charging?
BYD says its second-generation system can move from 20% to 97% state of charge at −30 °C with only three extra minutes compared with its stated normal-temperature result. The claim uses a different starting percentage from the 10%–97% headline, and the vehicle’s own preconditioning instructions still matter.
Can I use BYD’s five-minute charging system in the United States?
The researched announcements establish China deployment figures and European plans, but they do not establish a definitive U.S. consumer availability answer. Buyers should verify the local model specification, connector, station operator and retail availability rather than transfer Chinese or European announcements to the United States.
The Bottom Line
Bottom line: BYD can be as quick as filling up a tank during the charging session, but only for compatible vehicles at suitable Flash Charging terminals. The 2025 Han L claim was up to 400 km in five minutes; the 2026 claim is 10%–70% in five minutes and 10%–97% in nine minutes. Neither figure applies automatically to every BYD EV or every public charger.
