Fortify Labs says it first needed physical access to install software, and that lights and wipers were controlled through a separate physical CAN-bus connection. BYD later acknowledged a reported infotainment software defect and said a fix was planned after validation.
What did Four Corners demonstrate?
In a report published on September 21, 2026, ABC’s Four Corners showed Fortify Labs co-founder Dan Hreszczuk demonstrating access to several functions on a BYD Shark 6. ABC described the test as including door locks, audio and images on the screen, location and microphone access, and operation of the windscreen wipers, washer and lights. The program also showed an example involving a recording of the reporter’s conversation and voice-assistant interaction. These are details of the reported demonstration, not independently confirmed attacks on customer vehicles. ABC News / Four Corners, September 21, 2026.
Was the BYD Shark 6 hacked remotely?
There are two different stages to distinguish: getting access to the vehicle in the first place, and using access after software had been installed. Fortify Labs says it was asked to simulate how manufacturer-level access to a connected car could be abused, not to find a way into an ordinary customer vehicle. The lab says a publicly known technique provided unprivileged access to the head unit, but physical access was required to install its software. After installation, it says some software functions could be operated remotely.
That does not establish that a stranger could begin the same attack against an unmodified Shark 6 over the internet. Fortify also says it removed the test vehicle’s telematics SIM, isolating it from BYD’s backend during testing. The report therefore demonstrated capabilities in a prepared test setup, not an end-to-end remote compromise of a customer car through its normal cellular connection.

Fortify says its test vehicle was a lab-owned 2025 Shark 6 Premium, patched as of July 16, 2026. The lab began its research on July 17 and lists the head-unit software as version 56.1.2.2507080.1. These details describe that vehicle and test, not every Shark 6 or BYD model. Fortify Labs’ clarification, September 28, 2026.
How were the lights and wipers controlled?
Fortify says those functions were not activated through the head-unit software pathway alone. Its account is that researchers tapped the vehicle’s CAN-bus wiring and used a Raspberry Pi to simulate a compromised electronic control unit sending CAN messages. BYD’s reported response likewise said direct physical access to wiring connected to the CAN bus was required to access the headlights and wipers.

This distinction matters: the demonstration of infotainment-related access and the demonstration of lights and wipers involved different methods. The latter required a physical connection to vehicle wiring in the test; it should not be described as proof that those functions could be switched on remotely over the internet.
Could an attacker control the brakes or steering?
The test did not demonstrate control of the brakes or steering. ABC reported that Hreszczuk could not access more critical functions such as brakes and cameras during the test. That is a limit of the reported demonstration; it is not evidence that every possible attack path has been tested, or that every Shark 6 is vulnerable in the same way.

What did BYD say, and was a fix available?
CarsGuide reported on October 2, 2026, that BYD acknowledged an infotainment software defect that could let unapproved apps bypass internal protections and access Android Debug Bridge (ADB) functionality. According to CarsGuide, BYD said access required approval through a prompt on the central touchscreen. It planned to remove the software pathway through an over-the-air update after validation, and also planned device authentication, physical isolation and a risk assessment in relation to the CAN-bus issue. CarsGuide, October 2, 2026.
CarExpert reported that BYD’s internal investigation replicated actions shown in the program and characterized the head-unit issue as a software defect used to enable ADB and install a third-party application. It also reported that BYD was investigating whether other models were affected and would deploy an over-the-air update only after validation. These accounts quote or summarize BYD; the sources available do not include a direct BYD statement page. As of October 7, 2026, the reports do not establish that the planned update had been released. Was the Four Corners report a “hit piece”?
“Hit piece” is a criticism or framing, not a conclusion established by the technical evidence described here. Fortify’s clarification says the exercise was intended to simulate misuse of manufacturer-level connected-car access, rather than discover an initial route into a customer vehicle. BYD’s reported response adds that the headlight and wiper demonstration required physical wiring access. Those points help define what the test did and did not show; they do not prove that the program was either fair or unfair, or establish ABC’s editorial intent. The available sources do not establish an ABC response to the criticism.
Independent reader supportYour contribution helps us test, update, and keep practical guides available for everyone. What about location and microphone data?
ABC’s report described location tracking and microphone access in the demonstration. It also said BYD stated that collected data is stored in Australia and that it has not, and would not, transfer Australians’ data to Chinese authorities. Those data-handling assurances are attributed to BYD in ABC’s coverage and are not independently verified by the sources cited here.
