The BYD Seal 6 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid, not a battery-electric sedan. It can drive on electric power, but it also has a petrol engine; its headline range and fuel-economy figures are manufacturer claims, not promises of what every driver will achieve. The available independent road test is of the Touring estate in Boost trim, so its ride, handling and economy findings cannot be presented as sedan test results. On the evidence available, the Seal 6 looks like a practical, value-focused family plug-in hybrid, but there is not enough sedan-specific testing to call it a standout—or to say its driving experience is merely adequate with confidence.
What is the BYD Seal 6 DM-i?
The European-market Seal 6 DM-i is a plug-in hybrid (PHEV). Its Dual Mode powertrain can run electrically and includes a petrol engine, so it is not an EV in the usual sense of a car powered only by a rechargeable battery. “EV-like” is a fair description of some of its driving character, but not of its vehicle type.

That distinction matters when considering range and efficiency. A plug-in hybrid’s electric range depends on its battery and test conditions; once the battery is depleted, the petrol engine contributes to driving. BYD’s combined-range and fuel-consumption claims should therefore be read as manufacturer figures for particular configurations and test conditions, not as independent real-world results.
How do the trims, battery and range figures differ?
BYD’s 2025 launch material identifies two battery and power configurations for the sedan. Its current European product page, accessed in 2026, gives a separate headline figure for electric driving “in town.” These figures describe different trims or conditions and should not be collapsed into one range claim.

BYD’s European page also quotes 0–100 km/h in 8.5 seconds and fuel consumption of 1.5 L/100 km. Those are manufacturer claims; the available information does not establish them as independent sedan test results. The differing electric-range numbers are not necessarily contradictory: BYD labels the 140 km figure as an in-town figure, while the launch material gives up to 105 km for the larger-battery sedan. The conditions behind the page’s in-town figure are not detailed here, so it should not be treated as an expected range in every kind of driving.
What does the independent road test tell us—and what does it not?
Autocar’s review, published on 5 February 2026, tested the Seal 6 DM-i Touring estate in Boost trim, not the sedan. The reviewer praised the powertrain’s smoothness and quietness, the spacious and well-finished interior, and the price. The test also criticized the ride and handling polish, infotainment interface, and refinement compared with class leaders.

Those comments offer a useful indication of how one closely related version drove, but they are not sedan-specific findings. Illya Verpraet’s assessment of the Touring Boost was: “The suspension is quiet enough, but it feels leaden and lumpy over urban imperfections, while on the motorway there’s constant fidget on all but the smoothest Tarmac.” The Touring’s body and the exact sedan’s setup have not been independently assessed in the test cited here, so a buyer should not assume the same ride verdict applies unchanged to the sedan.

Autocar listed UK prices of £34,990 for its tested Boost and £36,990 for Comfort in that February 2026 review. These are dated UK prices, not current prices for every market or a guarantee of what a dealer will charge. BYD’s launch material also described a six-year vehicle warranty and eight-year drivetrain and battery cover, but warranty terms should be checked against the current offer in the buyer’s market.

How efficient is it when the battery is not fully charged?
Autocar reported 65.7 mpg in its everyday test, 42.8 mpg during its motorway test, and a 56.0 mpg test average for the Touring Boost. These are results from that publication’s test and conditions, not sedan results or universal real-world estimates. Its method aimed to keep the car in range-extender mode, but the car sometimes ran electrically.
Autocar estimated 939 miles of range from the everyday result and 612 miles from the motorway result, excluding additional electric distance from a mains charge. Those estimates likewise belong to the Touring Boost test and its method. They are not a prediction of the sedan’s range for every driver, route, charge level or journey.

How practical is the sedan?
The sedan is 4,840 mm long, 1,875 mm wide and 1,495 mm high, with a 2,790 mm wheelbase. BYD lists seating for five and a 491-litre boot. Folding the 40:60-split rear seat increases stated cargo capacity to 1,370 litres.

Do not confuse those sedan figures with the estate’s larger cargo area. BYD lists the Touring at 500 litres behind the rear seats to the parcel shelf, 675 litres when loaded beyond it, and up to 1,535 litres with the rear seats folded. The figures use different loading descriptions, so the Touring’s 675-litre figure is not directly equivalent to the sedan’s 491-litre boot measurement.

What should buyers know about charging?
BYD UK’s specification identifies a Type 2 charging connection. That establishes the connector type, but not whether a charging cable is included with a particular car. Confirm the included equipment, trim and local-market specification with the seller before relying on a particular cable or charging setup.
Autocar reported different charging capabilities for the UK Touring trims it tested: Boost was limited to 3.3 kW AC and had no DC charging capability; the larger-battery Touring could charge at up to 6.6 kW AC and 26 kW DC. These details apply to the Touring versions described in that review. They should not be assumed to establish charging speeds for every sedan trim or market; check the exact sedan specification before buying.
Is it a strong alternative to a conventional family car?
The case for the Seal 6 DM-i is clearest for someone who can charge regularly and wants a family-sized car with a petrol engine available for journeys beyond its electric range. Its sedan boot and five-seat layout make it a plausible practical choice, while the Touring is the body style to consider if the estate’s separately stated cargo capacity better suits the job.
The trade-off is that the headline range figures are manufacturer claims, and the available road-test evidence is for the estate rather than the sedan. Autocar names the Skoda Superb and Peugeot 308 estate as reference points for the Touring, but its review is not a controlled comparison with those cars, nor a sedan-to-sedan test. A buyer comparing alternatives should match body style, trim, market and price date, and consider electric range, efficiency after the battery is depleted, charging capability, comfort, handling, interface usability, warranty and cargo space.
For a sedan buyer, the responsible verdict is therefore measured: the Seal 6 DM-i has the ingredients of a practical, well-equipped family PHEV, but the independent evidence here is not sufficient to settle how its sedan rides, handles or performs in everyday use. A test drive in the exact trim and body style matters more than extrapolating the Touring review.
