BYD Says Its New EV Charging System Can Add Nearly 300 Miles in Five Minutes

BYD’s five-minute charging claim is tied to a complete vehicle-and-charger system, not the battery alone. Here is what the 249–292-mile figures and new 10–70% Blade Battery claim actually prove.

Short answer: BYD has announced an electric-vehicle charging system capable of adding roughly 250 to nearly 300 miles of claimed range in five minutes on selected vehicles—but the result depends on the complete vehicle-and-charger setup, not the battery alone.

BYD’s March 17, 2025 announcement said the Han L could gain 400 kilometers—about 249 miles—in five minutes. Contemporary reporting on tests described by BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu put the figure at approximately 470 kilometers, or 292 miles. BYD’s newer March 5, 2026 announcement focuses on its second-generation Blade Battery and says a compatible vehicle can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes using a dedicated charger rated at up to 1,500 kilowatts.

Those are BYD claims, not a universal EPA-rated result. They also cannot be reproduced with a household charger or an ordinary public DC fast charger.

The headline combines two BYD announcements

The “300-mile charge” story originated with BYD’s high-power charging announcement in 2025. The newer battery announcement adds important context, but it does not itself say that every compatible EV receives 300 miles of EPA-rated range in five minutes.

Date What BYD announced What the number means
March 17, 2025 Super e-Platform with a 1,000-volt architecture, up to 1,000 amps and a mass-produced 1-megawatt charging system BYD said the Han L could add 400 km of range in five minutes
March 17, 2025 Tests described by BYD chairman Wang Chuanfu and reported by Fortune Approximately 470 km, or about 292 miles, in five minutes on the Han L was reported
March 5, 2026 Second-generation Blade Battery and FLASH Charging BYD claimed 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes, with up to 1,500 kW through one connector

The two 2025 range figures are not necessarily contradictory. They may refer to different test references, vehicle configurations or reporting conventions. The safest wording is to attribute both figures rather than present 300 miles as a guaranteed result for every BYD vehicle.

Does BYD really add 300 miles in five minutes?

In a limited, company-reported sense, nearly 300 miles is a fair rounded description of the 2025 test figure. It is not accurate to state that a BYD battery universally delivers 300 miles in five minutes.

BYD’s official 2025 figure was 400 km, which converts to approximately 249 miles. The approximately 470-km figure—about 292 miles—comes from contemporary reporting about tests described by Wang. That is the closest source basis for the “nearly 300 miles” wording.

Several qualifications matter:

  • The figure concerns a particular vehicle and charging system, not every BYD model or every version of the Blade Battery.
  • The range number is not identified in the reviewed sources as an EPA-rated range addition.
  • Range depends on the vehicle’s efficiency, battery size, driving conditions and the range-testing standard used.
  • The result requires compatible high-voltage hardware in both the car and the charging station.
  • Charging speed changes with battery state of charge, temperature, battery conditioning, station conditions and other factors.

For those reasons, the defensible description is: BYD says its dedicated megawatt charging system can add roughly 250 to 300 miles of claimed range in five minutes on certain vehicles.

What the 2026 Blade Battery claim actually says

BYD’s March 2026 announcement is expressed primarily as a state-of-charge claim rather than a miles-of-range claim. The company says the second-generation Blade Battery can charge from 10% to 70% in five minutes and from 10% to 97% in nine minutes when paired with its FLASH Charging system.

That distinction is important. A 10-to-70% charge adds 60 percentage points of battery capacity, but the number of miles represented by those percentage points depends on the size of the battery and the vehicle’s efficiency. A large, efficient sedan and a heavier SUV could receive very different amounts of range from the same percentage increase.

Likewise, the 10-to-97% claim does not mean every vehicle gets the same number of miles in nine minutes. BYD’s materials separately discuss more than 1,000 km of range for certain vehicles, while other reporting cites a 777-km figure for particular second-generation Blade Battery applications. Such numbers must retain their stated testing context— including CLTC where applicable—rather than being treated as U.S. EPA equivalents.

  • Safe & Durable: Rely on this UL-certified EV charger for safe home charging. It can be installed indoors or outdoors by an electrician and includes a cold-resistant cable.
  • Fast & Powerful: This EV charger charges 9× faster than a 120V outlet, delivering up to 45 mi/hr., dependent upon your vehicle. It features a J1772 connector for all non-Tesla EVs and requires a 20A or 80A circuit. For Tesla EVs, this will require an adapter.

The charger is as important as the battery

This is not a case of swapping in a new battery and obtaining extreme charging speed from any power source. The result depends on a coordinated system made up of:

  1. The battery pack: It must be designed to accept very high charging power without unsafe temperatures or excessive stress.
  2. The vehicle’s electrical architecture: BYD’s 2025 platform used up to 1,000 volts and 1,000 amps. Multiplying those figures gives a theoretical 1 megawatt of electrical power.
  3. Thermal management: The battery, cables, connector and power electronics must be cooled and controlled while large amounts of energy move into the pack.
  4. The charging station: BYD’s 2026 FLASH system is advertised at up to 1,500 kW through a single connector. That is commercial-scale infrastructure, not a normal home EVSE unit.
  5. The charging curve: A vehicle may accept its highest power only during part of a session. Power commonly changes as the battery fills, warms or reaches a high state of charge.

A 1,500-kW charger operating at its maximum for five minutes would theoretically transfer 125 kWh before accounting for conversion losses or charging limits. That calculation illustrates the scale of the infrastructure; it does not prove that every session delivers 125 kWh or that every BYD vehicle can accept the full 1,500 kW.

BYD itself describes the charger as a dedicated FLASH Charging solution. A generic charging cable, portable charger or home wall charger cannot make a vehicle accept megawatt-level power.

How BYD compares with Tesla

Tesla’s official Supercharger page says its network can add up to 200 miles of range in 15 minutes. Tesla also notes that charging speed varies with the vehicle, battery state of charge, battery temperature, station use, climate and other conditions.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

On the companies’ published figures, BYD advertises a much higher peak replenishment rate on selected vehicles using dedicated 1- to 1.5-megawatt equipment. But that is not the same as proving that BYD offers a universally better charging experience.

The comparison is not standardized:

  • BYD’s figures concern selected vehicles and a dedicated FLASH charging system.
  • Tesla’s figure is a network-level “up to” claim and may vary by Supercharger generation and vehicle.
  • The two companies do not provide a controlled, independent test using the same battery temperature, starting state of charge, vehicle efficiency, weather and charger conditions.
  • Peak charging speed is only one part of convenience. The number and location of compatible stations, reliability, pricing and vehicle availability also matter.

The fair conclusion is that BYD has announced a potentially faster peak charging system—not that it has definitively beaten Tesla in every real-world measure.

Where is this charging available?

BYD’s announcements and the reviewed reporting do not establish that the system is broadly available in the United States or that all BYD vehicles sold outside the relevant launch markets support it. Buyers should not assume that a BYD vehicle marketed in one country can use the same charging hardware in another.

Before treating the five-minute claim as a practical buying advantage, a buyer would need to confirm:

  • the exact vehicle model and battery version;
  • whether the vehicle is sold and supported in the buyer’s country;
  • which connector and charging standard it uses;
  • whether a compatible FLASH station exists along the intended routes;
  • the charging power available at that station, rather than its advertised maximum;
  • the test standard behind the vehicle’s range figure; and
  • how charging performance changes in cold weather, at high battery percentages and after repeated fast-charge sessions.

What this means for home charging

Nothing in the BYD announcement changes the basic role of home charging. A home charger is useful because an EV can charge for hours while parked, while a high-power public charger is intended for rapid replenishment during a journey. They solve different problems.

The five-minute BYD result cannot be recreated by purchasing a consumer charging cable or installing an ordinary home wall charger. Reproducing it would require the compatible vehicle, high-voltage battery system, specialized connector, substantial grid capacity and dedicated FLASH station.

That distinction also prevents a common shopping mistake: a cable or home charger may be compatible with an EV’s everyday charging setup, but it is not a way to unlock BYD’s advertised megawatt charging speed.

What has not yet been demonstrated

The announcements are significant, but they do not answer every question buyers and fleet operators will have:

  • No reviewed source establishes that the 300-mile figure is an EPA-rated range addition.
  • No reviewed source shows that all BYD vehicles or all Blade Battery versions can achieve it.
  • No reviewed source provides a controlled independent comparison with a specific Tesla model under identical conditions.
  • The announcements do not establish long-term battery degradation from repeated megawatt charging.
  • The sources reviewed do not establish the lifetime cost, grid requirements or operating economics of deploying 1.5-MW chargers at scale.

Those gaps do not make the technology unimportant. They define what the announcement proves: BYD has presented a vehicle-and-infrastructure system with an unusually high claimed peak charging capability. They do not prove a universal 300-mile, five-minute experience for ordinary EV owners.

Verdict

BYD’s charging announcement is real, but the most dramatic version of the headline needs qualification. The company’s 2025 Super e-Platform announcement cited 400 km—about 249 miles—in five minutes, while a reported test figure reached roughly 470 km, or about 292 miles. Its 2026 second-generation Blade Battery update claims 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes with a 1,500-kW FLASH charger.

That puts BYD at the forefront of announced EV charging speed. It does not mean a BYD battery alone can charge 300 miles from any charger, that every BYD vehicle can do it, or that the result is directly comparable with an EPA range figure or Tesla’s everyday Supercharger experience.

Frequently Asked Questions

Can a BYD EV really gain 300 miles of range in five minutes?

BYD has reported or announced figures in that region for selected vehicles and dedicated charging equipment. Its official 2025 figure was 400 km, or about 249 miles, while a reported test figure was approximately 470 km, or about 292 miles. These are attributed company or test claims, not a universal EPA-rated result.

Is the 2026 Blade Battery claim the same as adding 300 miles?

No. BYD’s 2026 claim is mainly stated as a state-of-charge increase: 10% to 70% in five minutes and 10% to 97% in nine minutes. The number of miles gained depends on the vehicle, battery capacity, efficiency and range-testing standard.

Can a home EV charger deliver BYD’s five-minute charging speed?

No. BYD’s result requires a compatible high-voltage vehicle system and dedicated FLASH Charging infrastructure advertised at up to 1,500 kW through one connector. A household charger or ordinary public charger cannot reproduce that performance.

Has BYD definitively beaten Tesla at EV charging?

BYD advertises a higher peak replenishment rate on selected vehicles with dedicated megawatt infrastructure. Tesla officially advertises up to 200 miles in 15 minutes, but charging varies by vehicle, battery temperature, state of charge, station and climate. There is no reviewed independent, controlled test proving that BYD is universally better in real-world charging convenience.

Special offer. See more information about Outbyte and uninstall instructions. Please review EULA and Privacy policy.

The Bottom Line

Bottom line: BYD’s nearly 300-mile figure is a rounded, attributed test claim tied to a specific vehicle and megawatt charging system. The newer Blade Battery 2.0 announcement makes an impressive 10–70% charge claim, but neither announcement proves that every BYD EV—or any vehicle using an ordinary charger—can add 300 EPA-rated miles in five minutes.
