BYD sold 273,143 passenger battery-electric vehicles (BEVs) in September 2026, up 33.21% from 205,050 a year earlier. The increase is for passenger BEVs—not all of BYD’s new-energy vehicles (NEVs), a category that also includes plug-in hybrids (PHEVs). BYD’s monthly figures are unaudited and may be adjusted.
How many BYD electric cars did the company sell in September?
BYD reported 273,143 passenger BEV sales for September 2026, compared with 205,050 in September 2025. The year-on-year growth rate is 33.21%, according to CnEVPost’s comparison of the company’s monthly figures. September’s total was also 6.60% higher than August’s 256,230 and set a monthly record in CnEVPost’s series. BYD’s disclosure provides the monthly counts; CnEVPost reports the growth rates and record.
What does the 33% figure include?
It refers to passenger BEVs only. It should not be read as the growth rate for all BYD sales or even for all NEVs. BYD reported 463,561 total NEV sales in September, up 16.98% year on year. That total comprised 456,713 passenger NEVs and 6,848 commercial NEVs. BYD’s monthly table separates those categories.
Passenger BEVs and PHEVs moved in opposite directions
Within passenger NEVs, BYD sold 273,143 BEVs and 183,570 PHEVs. Passenger PHEV sales were down 2.36% year on year, while BEVs rose 33.21%. BEVs therefore made up about 59.8% of passenger NEV sales for the month, according to CnEVPost. The figures show a shift in the reported sales mix toward BEVs, but do not explain why customers chose one powertrain over another. How did overseas and domestic sales compare?
BYD reported 180,700 overseas NEV sales in September, up 153.59% year on year. CnEVPost calculated domestic sales at 282,861, down 12.97% year on year. These figures point to sharply different overseas and domestic trends, but they do not prove that overseas sales caused the overall increase. BYD reported the overseas NEV count; the domestic figure is CnEVPost’s calculation.
Reuters separately calculated 179,877 overseas shipments of passenger vehicles and pickups from BYD’s disclosure. That is a different description and scope from BYD’s total overseas NEV sales, so the two numbers should not be treated as directly interchangeable or as conflicting counts. How reliable are the September figures?
BYD’s September disclosure says its reported production and sales volumes are unaudited and may be adjusted pending final confirmation. They are company-reported monthly figures, not auditor-confirmed results. The reported increase establishes what BYD disclosed for the month; it does not, by itself, establish the reasons behind the sales change. The disclosure’s caveat applies to the figures.
