It still needs the other parts of a turbojet cycle, and the fact that a university project has studied and fabricated one does not make an arbitrary car turbocharger suitable—or establish a safe recipe for building or running one.
How a turbocharger turbojet works
A turbojet moves air through an inlet, compressor, burner, turbine and nozzle. The compressor raises the air pressure. Fuel is added and burned in the burner; the hot gas then expands through the turbine, which extracts energy to turn the compressor through a shaft. The gas leaving the turbine retains energy, and the nozzle accelerates it to produce thrust. NASA Glenn explains this sequence in its Turbojet Engine overview.
In the adaptation, the automotive turbocharger supplies the linked compressor and turbine wheels and their shaft. It does not, by itself, supply a complete turbojet: the gas path and the remaining engine functions must also be addressed. NASA’s example says that a typical jet engine combines “100 pounds of air/sec” with “only 2 pounds of fuel/sec.” That is an illustrative example from NASA, not a specification for a small turbocharger-based engine.
What a university project demonstrates—and what it does not
A Fall 2020–2021 senior design report from Prince Mohammad Bin Fahd University describes a project to design, fabricate, assemble and test a small turbojet built around a large diesel automotive turbocharger. The report characterizes the turbocharger as a compressor and turbine connected by a shaft, and the overall concept as an open-cycle, constant-pressure gas turbine. Read the project report as a case study, not as a general-purpose build plan.

Ways to learn about the concept
| Route | What it offers | What it does not establish |
|---|---|---|
| University project report | A documented design and fabrication case study involving an automotive turbocharger core. | Compatibility or safe operating guidance for other builds. |
| Institutional educational lab | Turbine Technologies describes a self-contained SR30 turbojet lab with data acquisition, engine monitoring, operator materials and safety instructions. Its listed measurements include pressures, temperatures, fuel flow, thrust and speed; it also describes automated start and health monitoring. | Consumer-level affordability, suitability for a particular reader, or guaranteed availability and configuration. Check the vendor’s current product information directly. |
| Non-operating cutaway model | The same vendor lists a turbojet cutaway model as an explanatory aid. | Construction hardware or a working engine. |
For a learning route, compare the objective, level of supervision, operating environment, instrumentation and monitoring, whether actual fabrication is involved, and access to a qualified test facility. The cited material does not support a meaningful cost comparison.

Why a test facility is part of the engineering question
Testing a running turbojet is not just a matter of assembling an engine: the enclosure and test environment are themselves specialist engineering concerns. SAE’s listing for ARP5305A, Structural Design and Construction Considerations for Enclosed Turbofan/Turbojet Engine Test Cells, identifies this as a dedicated subject. The listing displayed ARP5305B as verified on January 26, 2026; check SAE for the current edition and access details. The listing alone is not the standard’s full requirements and should not be treated as a design specification.
The sources here do not provide broadly applicable safe fabrication or operating instructions for hobbyists. They are not a basis for specifying combustor construction, fuel-system setup, ignition procedures, turbine temperature limits or an enclosure that would make operation safe. A supervised educational lab is a distinct learning environment, not evidence that an improvised setup is suitable.
