If you’re asking when the electric BMW 3 Series arrives, BMW says its Neue Klasse i3 entered production in August 2026, and U.S. orders opened on September 30. First deliveries are expected around the turn of 2026/2027. Its U.S. starting price is not “cheap” beside the gasoline 3 Series: the 2027 i3 50 xDrive starts at $61,500, while the 2027 BMW 330 starts at $49,900, before the same $1,350 destination and handling charge.
Is a cheap Neue Klasse BMW EV coming in 2028?
BMW has not established an official plan for a separate, lower-priced Neue Klasse electric car specifically for 2028. The car tied to the Neue Klasse electric 3 Series is the BMW i3, and its launch is already underway. BMW Group describes it as “the first fully electric BMW 3 Series based on the Neue Klasse” in its 2026 announcement.
That corrects the timing implied by the headline, but it does not rule out BMW introducing another affordable EV later. No such 2028 model should be treated as confirmed without an official announcement naming it.
When does the electric BMW 3 Series go on sale?
BMW says the i3 entered series production at its Munich plant on August 6, 2026. Its production announcement says orders had opened in mid-June. BMW’s subsequent announcement says U.S. orders for the new 3 Series opened on September 30, 2026, and first deliveries are expected around the turn of 2026/2027. Availability and delivery timing can differ by market.

How much does the BMW i3 cost in the U.S.?
For the 2027 model year, BMW lists a $61,500 base MSRP for the i3 50 xDrive in the U.S. The same release lists the 2027 BMW 330 at $49,900. BMW lists a $1,350 destination and handling charge separately for both, making the starting figures before that charge $62,850 and $51,250, respectively. These are U.S. prices, not global pricing or out-the-door totals; taxes, registration, options, and any dealer charges are not included in those calculated figures.

The i3 50 xDrive’s base MSRP is $11,600 higher than the 330’s before destination, or $11,600 higher when the same destination charge is added to each. BMW’s U.S. 2027 3 Series pricing announcement supplies both model prices and the fee. It does not establish the U.S. price of the i3 40 xDrive, so do not assume it will match a price for the 50 xDrive or infer a specific discount.

Range and charging rates are manufacturer specifications, not independent real-world test results. WLTP is the test cycle attached to BMW’s range claims; it should not be read as a promise of the distance every driver will achieve. Actual range and charging experience depend on conditions and use. The cited U.S. release gives the 50 xDrive’s base price, but not a price for the 40 xDrive. BMW’s i3 announcement provides the variant specifications.
How does the i3 compare with the gasoline 3 Series?
The clearest established comparison is purchase price: the 2027 i3 50 xDrive costs more at base MSRP than the 2027 BMW 330 in the U.S. The drivetrain is also fundamentally different: the i3 is fully electric, while the 330 is gasoline-powered. The published range figures above apply to the i3 and use WLTP; they are not directly comparable to gasoline-car fuel economy, which is measured and reported differently.

A complete ownership-cost verdict cannot be made from the published figures here. It would require market- and driver-specific details such as electricity and gasoline prices, insurance, maintenance, incentives, charging access, and how much the car is driven. The peak charging rate is not a promise of a particular charging time; charging duration depends on the charging equipment and conditions. Buyers should compare the full costs and practical refueling or charging options where they live, rather than treating the MSRP or maximum range as the whole ownership picture.

No. The iX3 is a separate SUV and was the first series-production Neue Klasse vehicle; the i3 is the electric 3 Series sedan. BMW Germany lists a starting price of €70,900 for the iX3 50 xDrive before transport costs on its German product page. That is Germany-specific SUV pricing and says nothing about the i3 sedan’s price or a separate affordable BMW EV planned for 2028.
