Yamaha also lists a 2026 US MT-10. Both are liter-class naked bikes with inline-four engines, but the available official specifications do not establish a performance winner. BMW publishes power and torque figures; Yamaha’s cited page gives more chassis and weight detail. Which is the better fit depends on your market, equipment priorities and intended use—not a head-to-head test result.
What changed on the updated BMW S 1000 R?
BMW’s October 2024 announcement covered the 2025 S 1000 R. The headline change was a 5 hp increase, to 170 hp, alongside Euro 5+ compliance. BMW also specified a shorter final drive ratio and an 11 mm longer wheelbase. These are manufacturer specifications, not evidence of a measured acceleration or handling advantage over the MT-10. BMW’s 2025 S 1000 R announcement describes the update.
Throttle and engine-braking changes
The 2025 model adds an M Quick-Action Throttle with a 58-degree rotation angle, plus standard MSR engine drag torque control and an optimized shift assistant. BMW says MSR can reduce engine drag torque by opening the throttle valves when it detects a risk of rear-wheel slip during abrupt throttle closure or downshifting; engine-braking settings are linked to riding modes. These descriptions explain BMW’s intended function, not a comparative test result.
Equipment, styles and options
BMW listed a USB-C socket, short license-plate holder and Intelligent Emergency Call among the update’s equipment changes. Its announced 2025 color and style choices were Black Storm Metallic, Style Sport Bluefire with a Mugiallo Yellow rear frame, and M Package Light White with M Motorsport graphics. Options and packages vary by market.

BMW’s 2025 release lists options including Dynamic Damper Control, Shift Assist Pro, Ride Modes Pro, Keyless Ride, cruise control, heated grips and tire-pressure monitoring in the Premium Package. The M Package includes items such as an M Sport seat, lightweight battery, sport silencer, Endurance chain, GPS lap trigger and forged wheels. Check the local configuration: an item appearing in a package list does not mean it is standard on every bike.
How do the 2026 US specifications compare?
The table compares selected official specifications for the US-market 2026 models. It is not a complete equipment comparison: where a cited source excerpt does not state a value, that does not mean the motorcycle lacks the feature.

BMW figures are from its 2026 US model-year listing; Yamaha figures are from Yamaha’s 2026 MT-10 specifications. The BMW summary gives power and torque but not suspension, seat height, fuel capacity, wet weight or fuel economy. Yamaha’s cited specifications page does not state horsepower, torque or price, so the table cannot support a direct power-to-weight or price comparison.
Which engine and equipment matter more to your riding?
On paper, both bikes belong to the same broad category: near-one-liter inline-four naked motorcycles. BMW provides a 170 hp and 84 lb-ft figure for its 2026 US model. Yamaha’s cited US specifications do not provide matching output figures, so there is no like-for-like official power or torque comparison here. Nor do these specifications establish which engine feels stronger, responds more smoothly or performs better in real riding.

The clearest documented contrast is the type of detail each manufacturer publishes in the cited material. BMW’s update emphasizes throttle response, revised gearing, MSR and optional equipment packages. Yamaha’s specification page details fully adjustable KYB suspension, a 32.9-inch seat height and a 467 lb wet weight. Those figures can help frame questions about setup and fit, but they do not establish comfort or handling superiority.
What do the prices mean in each market?
For the US 2026 model, BMW lists an MSRP of $15,385 plus destination. The cited Yamaha specification page does not establish a 2026 MT-10 price, so it would be misleading to call one bike cheaper using these sources.

BMW India announced the 2025 S 1000 R on September 15, 2025, at an introductory ex-showroom price of INR 19,90,000. That India-specific launch price excludes road and other charges stated by BMW; it is not a US price or a current global price. BMW India also said bookings were available through BMW Motorrad dealerships. Market-specific availability, pricing and configurations should be checked locally. The timing depends on market and model year. BMW announced the update as a 2025 model in October 2024; BMW India announced its local launch in September 2025; and BMW’s US site lists a 2026 model. So the update is already part of published model-year lineups, not merely a future global reveal. A listing does not by itself confirm dealer stock or delivery timing in a particular location.

Which bike should you shortlist?
The official figures support a shortlist, not a verdict about real-world superiority. Consider the BMW if its published output, updated controls and the specific package configuration available in your market match your priorities. Consider the Yamaha if its stated adjustable KYB suspension, seat height, fuel capacity and wet weight are useful starting points for your fit and setup decisions.
Neither source set establishes comparative handling, acceleration, braking, comfort, reliability, resale value, service costs or track performance. If you expect to ride on track occasionally, assess the exact local specification and any options you would need, then arrange a back-to-back test ride where possible. A manufacturer’s quoted performance or equipment list cannot substitute for a controlled comparison of the two motorcycles.
