The official figures show how the formula changed from a high-performance sedan powered by an inline-six to one combining a V8 with electric drive. They do not establish which M5 is best to drive: without documented, firsthand testing across the generations, naming a driving favorite would be guesswork.
How many generations of BMW M5 are there?
BMW M’s overview identifies seven M5 generations: E28, E34, E39, E60, F10, F90 and G90. The years below are the generations’ introduction years in BMW’s timeline, not necessarily model years in every market. BMW’s overview provides selected specifications rather than a uniform, independently measured comparison across all seven cars.
| Generation | Introduced | Powertrain and selected BMW figures |
|---|---|---|
| E28 | 1985 | 3,453 cc inline-six; 286 hp, 340 Nm; 0–100 km/h in 6.5 seconds; 245 km/h maximum speed. |
| E34 | 1988 | Output varies by version: 315–340 hp and 360–400 Nm; 0–100 km/h in 6.3–5.9 seconds. Fewer than 1,000 M5 Touring examples left the M factory, according to BMW. |
| E39 | 1998 | 4,941 cc V8; 400 hp, 500 Nm; 0–100 km/h in 5.3 seconds; 250 km/h maximum speed. |
| E60 | 2005 | Naturally aspirated 4,999 cc V10; 507 hp, 520 Nm; 0–100 km/h in 4.7 seconds; 250 km/h maximum speed. BMW highlights an 8,250 rpm maximum engine speed. |
| F10 | 2011 | Twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8; 560–575 hp depending on version and 680 Nm in BMW’s overview. |
| F90 | 2017 | BMW’s overview lists the Competition at 625 hp and 750 Nm, with 0–100 km/h in 3.3 seconds. That figure is for the Competition, not every F90. |
| G90 | 2024 | Plug-in hybrid with a 4.4-litre M TwinPower Turbo V8 and fifth-generation electric motor. BMW’s U.S. release for the 2025 model states 717 hp system output, 738 lb-ft system torque and 0–60 mph in 3.4 seconds. |
Except for the G90 row, the figures in the table come from BMW M’s generation overview, published in 2024. The G90 figures are BMW Group PressClub USA’s claims for the U.S.-market 2025 model, published in 2024. They are manufacturer specifications, not results from a comparative road test. In particular, the G90’s 0–60 mph figure should not be treated as directly equivalent to the other rows’ 0–100 km/h times.
What changed from one M5 generation to the next?
E28 and E34: the original formula takes shape
The E28 established the M5 as a high-performance business sedan. BMW says it was hand-built and lists a 3.5-litre inline-six producing 286 hp. The E34 followed in 1988, with power and acceleration figures varying by version. It also brought a rare Touring estate variant: BMW says fewer than 1,000 E34 M5 Tourings left the M factory.

E39 and E60: V8 refinement, then a high-revving V10
The E39 moved to a five-litre V8, which BMW describes as the first five-litre V8 in an M5. Its listed 400 hp and 500 Nm gave way in the next generation to a naturally aspirated V10. For the E60, BMW lists 507 hp and calls attention to the engine’s 8,250 rpm maximum speed. That high-revving V10 is the defining powertrain distinction of the fourth generation.
F10 and F90: turbocharged V8s and version-specific performance
The F10 replaced the E60’s naturally aspirated V10 with a twin-turbocharged 4.4-litre V8. BMW’s overview gives a 560–575 hp range depending on version. The F90 continued with a turbocharged V8, while adding all-wheel drive to the M5 formula. Its headline 625 hp and 3.3-second 0–100 km/h figures apply to the Competition version in BMW’s overview; the F90 range also included standard and CS versions, so those numbers should not be assigned to every F90.

G90: plug-in-hybrid power
The G90 marks the M5’s move to plug-in-hybrid power. For the U.S.-market 2025 model, BMW describes a system pairing a 4.4-litre V8 with a fifth-generation electric motor. Its 717 hp and 738 lb-ft are system-output figures, not the V8’s standalone output. BMW’s stated 3.4-second 0–60 mph time uses a different acceleration measure from the 0–100 km/h figures listed for earlier cars.
Which BMW M5 generation is the best?
There is no evidence here to support a single best-driving M5 or a firsthand favorite. BMW’s historical and specification pages document the lineage and the company’s own claims; they do not demonstrate that an independent publication drove every generation. A defensible driving verdict requires comparable, documented test notes—not an inference from horsepower, acceleration figures or nostalgia.

What “best” means also depends on the question. A buyer weighing an individual car may care more about its condition, intended use and preferred body style than its place in the lineage. For a generational comparison, useful distinctions include:
- Engine character: the inline-six E28, V8 E39, naturally aspirated V10 E60, turbocharged V8 F10 and F90, or V8-electric G90 represent markedly different approaches.
- Version and body style: BMW’s figures can vary by trim, and the E34 was also built as a Touring. Compare like with like rather than treating every generation as a single specification.
- Performance measurement: BMW’s cited acceleration figures use both 0–100 km/h and, for the U.S. G90 release, 0–60 mph. They are not a consistent test series.
- Technology and power delivery: the G90’s plug-in-hybrid system is a major change in how the M5 makes power; whether that suits a driver is a matter for a real-world comparison, not a conclusion established by output figures alone.
BMW’s M5 history in its own words
BMW M’s 2024 overview describes the lineage as “Combining elegance with breath-taking performance and technical innovation, it continues to delight generations of enthusiasts to this day.” That is BMW’s characterization of the M5, not an independent driving assessment.
