At a glance: BMW i4 vs JAECOO E5
| What matters | BMW i4 | JAECOO E5 |
|---|---|---|
| Body style | Five-door Gran Coupé | Compact electric SUV |
| Published WLTP range | 258–370 miles across the variants shown by BMW UK; the figure depends on version | Up to 248 miles, as stated by JAECOO UK |
| Battery and DC charging | 67.1 or 81.3 kWh; maximum DC charging power of 180–205 kW; 10–80% in 30–32 minutes, depending on version | 60.9 kWh; about 27 minutes from 30–80% with rapid charging |
| Advertised UK starting price | Current price not established here; obtain a quote for the exact trim and options | £27,505 OTR on JAECOO UK’s page |
| Published luggage capacity | 470–1,290 litres, according to BMW UK | Not stated in the cited JAECOO UK material; do not assume a capacity from the SUV body style |
| Warranty information verified here | Current UK terms not established | JAECOO states 7 years or 100,000 miles for the vehicle and 8 years for the battery system; check the full terms |
These are manufacturer-published specifications and claims, not a matched independent test. WLTP range is a standardised comparison figure, not a promise of the distance you will cover in everyday driving. BMW notes that real-world range varies with factors including load, driving style, route, weather, auxiliary use, tyres and battery health.

Which one suits your priorities?
Pick the BMW i4 for more published range and a car-like shape
The i4 is the more natural fit if you want a low-slung five-door rather than an SUV, and if the greater range of some listed versions is important. BMW UK’s published figures span 258–370 miles, so check the exact drivetrain and trim rather than treating the top figure as the range of every i4. BMW lists the car at 4,783 mm long and gives a luggage-capacity range of 470–1,290 litres.

The E5 is the value-led option in the available price evidence: JAECOO UK lists it from £27,505 OTR. It is also the obvious one to consider if you prefer an SUV body and want the stated warranty coverage to factor into the decision. Its official range claim is up to 248 miles WLTP, which is below the top i4 figure and close to the lower end of BMW’s published i4 range.

Do not choose the E5 on the assumption that its SUV shape guarantees more boot space. The cited JAECOO material does not provide a directly comparable luggage figure. If family loading, a pushchair, bulky gear or rear-seat access is decisive, inspect both cars with your usual passengers and luggage.
How do range and charging compare?
Range: compare the exact versions you would buy
BMW UK lists i4 WLTP range across its displayed variants at 258–370 miles. JAECOO UK says the E5 can cover up to 248 miles WLTP. Those figures provide a useful starting point for comparing official claims, but they do not establish a real-world range advantage on a particular journey: weather, speed, route, load and cabin heating or cooling all affect energy use. For the i4, identify the exact trim and drivetrain before comparing its figure with the E5’s maximum claim.

Rapid charging: the percentages are different
BMW quotes 30–32 minutes for an i4 DC charge from 10% to 80%, with maximum DC power of 180–205 kW across the listed versions. JAECOO quotes about 27 minutes for an E5 rapid charge from 30% to 80%. These times cover different charge windows, so they are not a direct measure of which car makes a shorter stop. Peak charging power is also not the same as the power sustained throughout a charging session.
Home charging: use the E5 figure as manufacturer guidance
JAECOO says a roughly 7 kW home charger takes about 4.2 hours to charge the E5 from 30% to 80%. Treat that as guidance rather than a guaranteed time: the supply, charger, temperature and vehicle conditions matter. JAECOO also identifies Ascent Energy Services as its branded home-charger partner. If you have suitable off-street parking, confirm installation requirements, electrical supply and connector compatibility before arranging a 7 kW home EV charger.

Is the JAECOO E5 cheaper to buy or run?
JAECOO UK advertises the E5 from £27,505 OTR. Top Gear’s 4 May 2026 E5 pages show different price ranges: its trim table lists £27,440–£30,440, while its buying copy gives £27,505–£30,505. Because the published figures conflict slightly, ask a dealer for a written, current on-the-road price for the trim you want.
A current BMW i4 UK price was not established in the cited material, so it is not possible to calculate a reliable purchase-price gap. Compare the same basis for both cars: trim, options, on-the-road price, finance deposit and payments, any final payment, dealer discount, and the cost of insurance. A lower list price alone does not settle which car costs less to own.

Nor does the evidence establish which is cheaper to run. Charging costs depend on your electricity tariff, how much you charge at home versus public chargers, charging losses and annual mileage. To compare your likely spend, use the energy consumption figures for the exact versions under consideration and your own tariff and driving pattern; do not infer running costs from battery size or WLTP range alone.

What should you check before ordering?
- Get an exact quote: confirm each car’s trim, options, current OTR price and any finance offer in writing.
- Ask BMW for current warranty terms: comparable current UK coverage was not established for the i4 here. JAECOO states 7 years or 100,000 miles for the vehicle and 8 years for the battery system; request the full terms and conditions, including applicable limits and exclusions.
- Test the shape and access: sit in both cars, check rear-seat entry, visibility, parking fit and how easily your regular cargo fits. Do not assume the E5 has a larger boot without verified measurements.
- Plan charging around your routes: check home-charging feasibility and nearby rapid chargers, and consider the charge window behind each quoted time.
- Seek comparable evidence if driving or safety is decisive: the cited material does not establish a head-to-head road-test result or directly comparable independent safety rating. Review assessments for the exact versions and model years you are considering.
Verdict
The BMW i4 is the stronger fit for buyers prioritising the higher published WLTP range available on some versions, a Gran Coupé layout and higher listed DC charging power. The JAECOO E5 makes more sense if you want an SUV and its £27,505 advertised entry price and stated warranty are compelling. The choice is conditional: settle the exact BMW price, both cars’ warranty terms and the practical fit of their interiors before treating either as the better-value purchase.
