BMW’s 2018 F90 M5 launch specification claims 0–60 mph in 3.2 seconds, while Chevrolet lists less than 3 seconds for a 2024 Corvette Stingray equipped with the Z51 package. The M5 is a remarkably quick, understated four-door; those published figures do not show it outrunning that Z51 Corvette in a 0–60 sprint.
Which M5 and Corvette are being compared?
The F90 is the sixth-generation BMW M5. BMW’s 2017 launch release describes the 2018 model: a four-door sedan with a 4.4-liter twin-turbocharged V8 rated at 600 hp and 553 lb-ft of torque. It pairs that engine with an eight-speed automatic and M xDrive all-wheel drive, which also offers a selectable rear-wheel-drive mode. BMW’s 2018 M5 launch specifications give a 0–60 mph time of 3.2 seconds.
For the new-car side, Chevrolet’s 2024 Stingray specification sheet lists 490 hp as standard, or 495 hp with Z51 or the available performance exhaust. Its published 0–60 mph claim is less than 3 seconds with Z51. That is a specific trim-and-package claim, not a result for every Stingray configuration. Chevrolet’s 2024 Corvette Stingray specifications identify the package and power figures.
| Car and specification | Published power | Published acceleration | Drivetrain detail |
|---|---|---|---|
| 2018 BMW F90 M5 launch model | 600 hp; 553 lb-ft | 0–60 mph in 3.2 seconds | M xDrive all-wheel drive, with selectable rear-wheel drive |
| 2024 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray, standard | 490 hp | Not stated for this configuration in Chevrolet’s cited sheet | Not stated in the cited specification figures |
| 2024 Chevrolet Corvette Stingray with Z51 | 495 hp | Less than 3 seconds to 60 mph | Z51-equipped Stingray |
These are manufacturer-published specifications, not a controlled head-to-head test. The quoted figures do not establish which individual cars would win on a particular road or track: model year, options, surface, weather, launch technique, tires, and vehicle condition can affect results. The available figures are enough to say the launch M5’s stated 0–60 time is slower than Chevrolet’s stated Z51 time, not to declare a universal winner across all M5 and Corvette versions.

Which F90 M5 version are you looking at?
Launch M5
The original 600-hp version is the model behind BMW’s 3.2-second 0–60 mph claim. BMW lists a 155-mph electronically limited top speed as standard; the 189-mph figure applies only with the optional M Driver’s Package. Those top-speed limits are separate from the acceleration comparison.
M5 Competition
BMW says the M5 Competition arrived in mid-2018 and produced 625 hp. That extra power makes it a different comparison from the launch car, but the cited BMW overview does not provide a directly comparable 0–60 mph figure for the Competition. BMW M’s F90 history lists the Competition and CS specifications.

M5 CS
The F90 range also included the 635-hp M5 CS. BMW gives it a 0–100 km/h time of 3.0 seconds. That is not the same measurement as 0–60 mph, so it should not be placed side by side with the Stingray’s 0–60 claim as if the two numbers were identical tests.
Why the M5 still earns the “sleeper” label
“Sleeper” is a description of the contrast between the M5’s restrained sedan shape and its performance, not a standardized performance category. Its V8, high output, and all-wheel-drive traction make it exceptionally quick while retaining four doors and a conventional sedan layout. BMW describes M xDrive as combining rear-drive character with all-wheel-drive traction; the launch model’s selectable rear-wheel-drive mode gives drivers another way to configure it.

A Corvette Stingray serves a different purpose. It is a two-seat sports car rather than a four-door sedan. The useful comparison is not just horsepower or a single acceleration claim: it is also whether you want a low two-seat sports-car layout or a fast sedan that can carry more occupants and everyday cargo. The published figures here cannot settle that practical choice for you.

Acceleration specifications describe a new-car configuration, not the condition of a used example. A used M5’s service history, mileage, maintenance, tires, and recall status matter to the car you are actually considering. PistonHeads’ 2023 UK buying guide discusses historical examples and recall concerns; its prices are a snapshot from the time of writing, not a current market quote or a guide to US values. How to read the “outruns a new Corvette” claim
The claim works as a provocative description of the F90 M5’s performance, but it is not supported as a blanket 0–60 verdict against the cited new Corvette. On the published figures available here, a 2024 Stingray with Z51 is quicker to 60 mph than the 2018 launch M5. Other M5 trims, Corvette configurations, and real-world conditions require their own like-for-like comparison; the cited specifications do not provide an independently controlled race between them.
