BMW has confirmed that series production of its new fully electric BMW i3 sedan begins in August 2026. The 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive is expected to open for U.S. orders in Q4 2026, making it a forthcoming electric 3 Series-style rival to the Tesla Model 3—not a successor to the old i3 hatchback.
The new BMW i3 is an electric 3 Series sedan—not the old i3 hatchback
BMW has confirmed that series production of its new fully electric BMW i3 sedan will begin at the BMW Group’s Munich plant in August 2026. In the United States, the 2027 BMW i3 50 xDrive is expected to open for orders in Q4 2026, with U.S. availability beginning in 2027.

This is a completely different vehicle from the discontinued BMW i3 hatchback sold from 2013 through 2022. The new i3 is the second model in BMW’s Neue Klasse family and is positioned as an electric interpretation of the BMW 3 Series sedan. That makes the Tesla Model 3 a sensible competitive reference point, although BMW has not formally described the car as a direct Model 3 replacement.

When will the new BMW i3 launch?
| Market or milestone | Confirmed timing | What it means |
|---|---|---|
| Munich production | August 2026 | Series production of the new i3 is scheduled to begin. |
| United States orders | Q4 2026 | BMW USA says the 2027 i3 50 xDrive will be available to order. |
| United States availability | 2027 model year | BMW USA describes the electric i3 sedan as arriving in the U.S. in 2027. |
| United Kingdom deliveries | Autumn 2026 | BMW’s UK forecast applies to that market and should not be treated as a U.S. delivery date. |
BMW’s earlier announcements referred more generally to the second half of 2026. The later production information specifies August as the start of series manufacturing. That still does not establish an exact U.S. customer-delivery date. BMW USA has confirmed ordering and model-year timing, but not a particular delivery month or day.

What is the BMW i3?
The new i3 is a low-slung, four-door electric sedan built around BMW’s Neue Klasse technology. Its role in the lineup is broadly comparable to that of an electric 3 Series: a premium compact-to-midsize sedan intended to combine long-distance usability with BMW’s traditional sedan format.
The name can cause confusion. The first BMW i3 was a small electric hatchback with a distinctive carbon-fiber-intensive construction and rear-hinged rear doors. That model ended production in 2022. The Neue Klasse i3 is a new sedan and should not be treated as a facelift, replacement body style, or continuation of the old car’s specifications.
Why the Tesla Model 3 is the obvious benchmark
The Model 3 comparison comes from market positioning rather than a narrowly worded BMW claim. Both vehicles occupy the premium electric-sedan category, so shoppers are likely to compare them on:

It is too early to say that the i3 will outsell, outperform, or replace the Model 3. BMW has not released final U.S. pricing, and independent testing of the i3’s range, acceleration, efficiency, charging curve, ride quality, or reliability is not yet available. The meaningful comparison will have to wait until production cars can be tested under the same conditions.
Range and charging: impressive targets, not independent test results
BMW says the new i3 uses sixth-generation BMW eDrive technology and an 800-volt electrical architecture. BMW USA gives a projected range of up to 440 miles for the U.S. model. That is a manufacturer projection, not an independently verified road-test result.
BMW’s European materials quote figures of up to 900 km using the WLTP testing cycle. WLTP and U.S. EPA range figures are not interchangeable, so the 900-km figure should not be converted directly into a U.S. range claim. The 440-mile number is the relevant figure in BMW USA’s published U.S. materials, but final certification and vehicle configuration still matter.
The i3 is also announced with DC fast-charging capability of up to 400 kW. BMW says the car can add up to 400 km of WLTP range in 10 minutes under its stated high-power-charging conditions. That result depends on factors including battery state of charge, battery temperature, charging-station output, cable capability, and the vehicle’s charging curve. A 400-kW-rated vehicle does not mean every public charger will deliver 400 kW.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errors2Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute3Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problemsFor buyers, the peak number is less important than how long the car can sustain high power, how widely suitable chargers are available, and what the complete charging stop looks like in real weather and traffic. Those questions require production-car testing.

The new i3 introduces BMW Panoramic iDrive, BMW’s next-generation display and control concept. It forms part of a broader Neue Klasse interior and software overhaul rather than simply adding a larger version of an existing screen.

BMW Operating System X
BMW says the car will run BMW Operating System X. The software is intended to provide the interface, connected functions, and vehicle controls for the Neue Klasse generation. Exact U.S. functions, subscription requirements, update schedules, and final equipment packaging may change before launch.
Heart of Joy
Heart of Joy is BMW’s central control architecture for drivetrain and vehicle-dynamics functions. BMW describes it as coordinating key propulsion and driving-control tasks. It is an important part of the company’s technical pitch, but the available launch material does not amount to independent validation of handling, acceleration, braking, or ride-quality claims.
Bidirectional energy capability
BMW also identifies vehicle-to-grid or other bidirectional-energy capability as part of the i3’s technology package. In principle, bidirectional charging can allow energy to move between the vehicle and compatible external systems. In practice, usable functionality depends on the market, vehicle software, charging hardware, utility arrangements, and local regulations.
Prospective owners should therefore avoid assuming that every U.S. i3 will automatically be able to power a home or sell energy back to the grid at launch. BMW has not established universal availability for every owner and every location.
What charging equipment will an i3 owner need?
Home charging will likely be the most convenient way to use the i3. BMW’s U.S. charging guidance discusses home equipment such as its Flexible Fast Charger and Multifunction Charger, as well as public charging through compatible networks and adapters.
A buyer considering an installation should check four things before purchasing equipment:
- Connector compatibility: confirm the connector and charging standard for the final U.S.-specification car.
- Electrical capacity: have an electrician verify that the home’s panel, circuit, wiring, and breaker can support the selected charger.
- Charging location: account for cable reach, weather exposure, mounting, and safe routing.
- Vehicle and software support: verify that any advanced or bidirectional function is supported by the final car, charger, utility, and local rules.
A generic EV charging cable may be useful as a portable or backup option, but no particular third-party cable should be presented as confirmed for the unreleased U.S. i3 until BMW publishes final compatibility information. Check the connector, amperage, voltage, and safety certification rather than buying solely because a listing mentions BMW or “universal” EV compatibility.
For long trips, public charging access will matter just as much as the car’s maximum charging rate. BMW’s guidance discusses compatible networks and adapter-based access, but network availability and compatibility can vary by location and may change before the i3 reaches U.S. customers.

BMW has converted its Munich plant for Neue Klasse production and has reported that pre-series i3 vehicles were being built ahead of series production. Pre-series manufacturing is an important sign that the factory is preparing tooling, processes, and quality controls. It is not evidence that regular customer deliveries have started.

The stated August 2026 date is the beginning of full series production. Vehicles still need to be built, allocated to markets, transported, and prepared for delivery. The timing of an individual U.S. customer’s car could therefore differ from the production-start date.

Should you wait for the BMW i3?
The i3 is worth watching if you want a premium electric sedan with a BMW dealer and service network, a 3 Series-like format, long stated range, 800-volt charging, and the newer Neue Klasse interface. Its strongest advertised advantages are its potential range and charging capability, but both need to be assessed against final U.S. certification and independent testing.
Waiting also means accepting uncertainty about price, availability, equipment, and charging access. A buyer who needs a car before 2027 should evaluate currently available EVs rather than treating the i3’s launch schedule as guaranteed inventory. A buyer who can wait should compare the final i3 with the Model 3 and other electric sedans after BMW publishes pricing and opens the order books.
