The reported BMW 858 CSL is a one-off E31 850i restomod by Rein Speed Shop: it replaces the donor car’s V12 with an E60 M5-family S85 V10 reportedly enlarged to 5.8 liters, paired with a six-speed manual. Its modified engine output has not been disclosed, so its performance cannot be fairly compared with a stock E31 or an M5.
Why is it called the 858 CSL, not the 858 CSI?
The project is identified in the automotive reports as the BMW 858 CSL. “858 CSI” appears in the supplied headline, but the reported build name is 858 CSL. It is based on an E31-generation BMW 850i and was built as a one-off by Rein Speed Shop. Carscoops and Motor Fan describe the project; neither establishes that it is a production model.
What engine does the BMW 858 CSL use?
The 850i donor’s V12 was reportedly removed in favor of an S85 V10 from the E60-generation BMW M5. The original S85 displaced 5.0 liters; reports say the engine in this build was stroked to 5.8 liters, which accounts for the “858” name. That 5.8-liter figure is a reported specification, not an independently verified measurement.
Carscoops gives the standard 5.0-liter S85’s output as 507 hp and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft). Those figures describe the original engine, not the modified 5.8-liter unit. The reports do not disclose the 858 CSL’s final horsepower or torque, so assigning it a power figure—or claiming a particular performance advantage—would go beyond what is established.

How is the V10 power sent to the road?
Reports describe a six-speed manual gearbox driving the rear wheels. The combination gives the V10-powered car a traditional manual, rear-drive layout, but published information does not provide gear ratios, acceleration figures, or other independently verified performance measurements.
What has changed on the E31?
Exterior
The build retains the E31’s grand-touring foundation but substantially revises its appearance. Its custom carbon-fiber bodywork is credited to designer Jonsibal and includes widened, box-style fenders and redesigned bumpers. The original pop-up headlights give way to hood vents; reports also note custom wheels, revised lighting, and a changed exhaust.

Interior
The cabin is reported to have been redesigned with newer BMW M components. The available reporting does not inventory every component or document its fitment, so the description should be understood as a summary of the reported conversion rather than a verified parts list.
How does it compare with a stock E31?
The 858 CSL is not a like-for-like factory E31 variant: it changes the engine, transmission arrangement, bodywork, and cabin, and is reported as a one-off. Carscoops lists 300 hp for the E31 850i and 375 hp for the 850 CSi, while giving 507 hp and 520 Nm (384 lb-ft) for the unmodified 5.0-liter S85. These are contextual figures from that report, not measurements of the restomod. Because the tuned V10’s output is unknown, the numbers do not establish how the 858 CSL performs against either stock model.

Can you buy the conversion?
The reports describe a one-off project, not a retail conversion kit. They do not establish that Rein Speed Shop currently offers the same build to customers. Anyone considering a similar E31 project would need to confirm availability and specifications directly with the shop rather than assume this car represents a purchasable package.
