On current MBUX, the usual route is Phone → Devices → Connect new device; confirm that the code on the car and phone matches. Menus and capabilities vary substantially between MBUX, COMAND, Audio 20, model years, equipment and markets, so use your vehicle’s exact manual for any step described as model-specific.
Before troubleshooting, decide whether the fault is discovery, pairing, reconnection, calls, music, or smartphone projection. CarPlay and Android Auto are separate functions from ordinary Bluetooth.
First identify what is actually failing
The Mercedes never appears on the phone
- Bluetooth may be disabled in the vehicle or phone.
- The car may not be in its Connect new device or pairing screen.
- Another phone may already be occupying the connection process.
- Bluetooth may be temporarily stuck, the phone may be too far away, or an older system may not support the phone or requested Bluetooth profile.
The phone appears, but pairing fails
Check that the confirmation code was accepted on both screens. A stale pairing record, a full or misbehaving device list, another paired Mercedes, or software incompatibility can also stop authorization. A 2016 COMAND manual, for example, describes up to 15 authorized phones but only one active telephony connection; limits differ by system (2016 COMAND manual).
It pairs, then disconnects
Suspect a damaged record, a second phone reconnecting first, a phone Bluetooth-service glitch, multimedia software, or competition from CarPlay or Android Auto. The phone may also be authorized for calls but not media.

Calls work but music does not
This is usually a media permission, audio-source, or Bluetooth-profile issue rather than total pairing failure. Mercedes documentation notes that supported phone, contact, message and media functions depend on the phone’s profiles and permissions (Mercedes EQV MBUX manual).
Music works but calls or contacts do not
Check telephony authorization, contact and message permissions, privacy settings, and which phone is active when two phones are stored.
Bluetooth works but CarPlay or Android Auto does not
That is a smartphone-projection problem. Vehicle equipment, phone compatibility, software, cable, USB port and wired or wireless support determine whether projection works; ordinary Bluetooth pairing alone does not provide it (Mercedes smartphone integration information).
Cleanly re-pair the phone and Mercedes
Perform the procedure while parked. Mercedes manuals warn against operating mobile devices while driving. Identify whether the car has touchscreen MBUX, rotary-controller COMAND, Audio 20, another factory system, or an aftermarket head unit. 1. Restart Bluetooth on the phone
- iPhone: Open Settings → Bluetooth, turn Bluetooth off, wait about five seconds, and turn it on again. Restart the iPhone if necessary. Apple documents this sequence at Apple Bluetooth and CarPlay troubleshooting.
- Android: Open Settings → Connected devices or Settings → Bluetooth, toggle Bluetooth, restart the phone, and use Forget or Unpair for an existing Mercedes entry. Menu names vary by manufacturer; Google’s guidance is at Android Bluetooth troubleshooting.
2. Forget the Mercedes on the phone
On iPhone, go to Settings → Bluetooth, tap the information icon beside the Mercedes, choose Forget This Device, and confirm. On Android, open the Bluetooth device settings and choose Forget, Unpair or Forget device.
3. Delete the phone in the Mercedes
On current MBUX, the general path is Phone → Devices. Select the old phone and choose Delete, Remove or Deauthorize; remove unused duplicates as well. Then choose Connect new device. Recent MBUX instructions show this workflow in the 2025 CLE manual and the 2025 GLE manual.
COMAND and older Audio systems may instead use TEL, Phone, Bluetooth phone, Connect device or Authorize device. Do not apply an MBUX path to an older car; consult the exact model-year manual.
4. Start pairing from the Mercedes display
- Enable Bluetooth on the phone.
- In the car, open Phone → Devices → Connect new device, or the equivalent menu.
- Select the phone shown by the Mercedes.
- Compare the code on both screens and accept it on the phone only when the codes match.
- Allow calls, contacts, messages and media permissions that you want.
- If offered, set the phone as the active or preferred device.
Many vehicles expect pairing to begin on the car display rather than from the phone’s list. Apple makes the same point for most car systems (Apple support).

5. Remove competing devices and clarify the phone name
- Turn Bluetooth off on a passenger’s phone and move other paired phones away temporarily.
- Delete old or duplicate devices from the Mercedes list.
- On iPhone, rename the device at Settings → General → About → Name, for example “Alex iPhone,” then pair again. Apple recommends renaming when multiple phones have been used with a stereo (Apple support).
When calls work but music does not
- Open the Mercedes audio-source selector and choose Bluetooth audio, not radio, USB or another source.
- In the phone’s Mercedes Bluetooth settings, enable Media audio (Android labels vary).
- Check phone and media-app volume and start playback after the connection is established.
- Confirm that the vehicle supports Bluetooth audio; some older systems provide hands-free calls with limited media capability.
CarPlay and Android Auto need separate troubleshooting
Apple CarPlay
CarPlay may be wired or wireless depending on Mercedes equipment. For a CarPlay-only failure, open Settings → General → CarPlay, remove the saved Mercedes, and set it up again. For wired CarPlay, use a known-good data cable in the correct data-capable USB port; a charge-only cable or power-only port will not carry projection. Check Siri and requested permissions. Wireless CarPlay uses more than ordinary Bluetooth setup, so fixing a Bluetooth record alone may not restore it. Apple’s setup guidance is at Apple support.
Android Auto
Verify that the exact Mercedes supports wired or wireless Android Auto. For wired use, try a capable data cable and the correct USB port. Remove the car from Android Auto’s previously connected vehicles, forget the Mercedes Bluetooth record, check Android Auto and Google Play system updates, and test ordinary Bluetooth separately. Google’s compatibility guidance is at Android Auto Help.
Restarting versus resetting MBUX
A multimedia reboot can help when the screen is frozen, no devices appear, a stale “connected” state remains, or audio stopped after an update. A factory reset is different: it can erase paired devices, profiles, personal settings and other vehicle preferences. Do not use an internet button combination as a universal Mercedes procedure. Follow the exact digital manual; for example, Mercedes publishes a model-specific reset page for the 2023 GLB at GLB MBUX reset instructions. Reset only when the manual supports it and you understand what will be erased.
Use a second phone to isolate the fault
- Another phone connects: the original phone, its software, permissions, saved records or accessories are the main suspects.
- No phone connects: investigate the Mercedes device list, Bluetooth setting, multimedia software or hardware.
- Only one function fails: focus on the relevant profile, media authorization or smartphone-projection compatibility rather than declaring the Bluetooth module defective.
If the problem began after an update, record the phone model, iOS or Android version, Mercedes model year, MBUX or COMAND version if shown, exact error message, and whether calls, media and projection fail independently. Check current phone and manufacturer firmware, plus Mercedes software updates or dealer campaigns. Update delivery depends on model, market and equipment; not every Mercedes receives the same over-the-air updates. Apple recommends current phone software and current vehicle-stereo firmware (Apple support).

When the vehicle needs professional diagnosis
- No phone can discover or pair with the car after deletion on both sides and a documented reboot.
- The Bluetooth menu is missing or disabled, the screen is black, or the multimedia system repeatedly freezes or reboots.
- The issue follows battery replacement, electrical repair, water intrusion or infotainment replacement.
- An older COMAND module, aftermarket head unit, Bluetooth adapter or retrofit may limit compatibility.
Use Mercedes’ model-specific manuals and support resources (manuals, how-to videos, U.S. contact page). The Mercedes-Benz USA customer assistance number listed there is 1-800-367-6372. Dealer labor and software-update costs vary by location, warranty and fault, so no universal price applies.
What you may actually need to buy
- Nothing: start with the free delete, restart and re-pair process and the correct manual.
- Replacement data cable: reasonable only when wired CarPlay or Android Auto fails while the phone charges. Choose a data-capable cable and correct connector; Apple recommends trying another cable or USB port (Apple support).
- Wireless projection adapter: consider only if the Mercedes already supports wired CarPlay or Android Auto and the adapter explicitly supports the vehicle and phone. It does not repair ordinary Bluetooth.
- Older-car retrofit: an AUX receiver, FM transmitter, integration module or replacement head unit may help a Mercedes without factory Bluetooth audio. Compatibility, sound quality, factory integration and installation complexity differ; do not buy one before identifying the head unit and available inputs.
The Mercedes-Benz app is not a Bluetooth repair. It links a vehicle to a Mercedes account for connected services using a QR code or VIN; ordinary hands-free calls and Bluetooth audio do not require it (Mercedes-Benz app).

Why does my Mercedes connect but not play music?
Select Bluetooth audio as the Mercedes source, enable Media audio for the car on the phone, check both volume controls, and confirm that the vehicle supports Bluetooth audio rather than calls only.
Why does the car connect to someone else’s phone first?

Can an older Mercedes connect to a new iPhone or Android phone?
Possibly, but COMAND and Audio 20 systems differ in supported profiles and device limits. Check the exact model-year manual and test another phone before assuming either device is defective.
Does the Mercedes-Benz app fix Bluetooth pairing?
No. The app handles account-based connected services; phone pairing for calls and music is a separate multimedia function.
Should I factory-reset MBUX?
Only after toggling Bluetooth, deleting records on both sides, removing competing phones, re-pairing from the Mercedes, checking updates and performing any documented reboot. A factory reset can erase personal settings and paired devices.
