If your bicycle’s disc-brake rotor is rubbing the caliper or pads, first check that the wheel is fully seated and the rotor, hub, and pistons are sound. Only then try centering the caliper. The right fix depends on whether the brake is hydraulic or mechanical—and whether the rotor rubs all the way around or only at one point.
Start with the wheel and rotor
Work with the wheel installed as it will be ridden. Make sure it is fully seated in the dropouts or secured in the thru-axle according to the bicycle maker’s procedure; a wheel that is not seated correctly shifts the rotor relative to the caliper.
Spin the wheel and look through the caliper at the rotor. Backlighting the caliper can make the gaps easier to see. Note whether the rotor stays in one position relative to the pads or moves side to side as it turns. A localized rub often points to rotor lateral movement; a rub throughout the rotation can have other causes.
- Check for play at the rotor bolts or lockring.
- Check for hub-bearing play by gently moving the rim side to side.
- Look for pistons that fail to retract or do not move evenly.
- Inspect for a bent or damaged rotor and verify that the pads are not worn beyond the limit specified for your brake.
Park Tool lists a bent rotor, rotor play, bearing play, and sticky pistons among common causes. Significant rotor movement can make caliper adjustment difficult or impossible; the rotor may need truing or replacement, depending on its condition and the brake maker’s limits. A truing tool addresses rotor movement only—it will not correct a mis-seated wheel, loose hub, sticky piston, or crooked mount.
Center a hydraulic caliper
For many hydraulic brakes, the basic centering method is to let the caliper move, use the brake lever to position it around the rotor, then tighten the mounting bolts. Follow your brake and bicycle manuals for the procedure and final torque.

- Loosen both caliper mounting bolts just enough for the caliper to move side to side.
- Squeeze and hold the brake lever so the pads clamp the rotor.
- While continuing to hold the lever, snug the mounting bolts so the caliper stays in position.
- Release the lever and spin the wheel. Check that the rotor clears both pads.
- If it still rubs, make small visual adjustments to the caliper and recheck the gaps as the wheel turns.
Park Tool gives 6–8 Nm as a typical caliper mounting-bolt torque in its general alignment procedure, but that is not universal. Use the specification for your actual brake, frame, and hardware; do not treat a generic figure as a substitute for the manufacturer’s instructions.
Adjust a mechanical caliper by its design
Cable-actuated brakes do not all use the same pad-adjuster arrangement, so use the instructions for your caliper rather than assuming the hydraulic lever-centering method applies. Park Tool’s mechanical-brake guide covers different caliper styles. The aim is a caliper parallel to the rotor, even pad clearance, and a lever that feels and brakes properly.

- Bike Disc Brake Rotor:Bike disc brake rotor can provide excellent braking force and easy to install, improve braking force, shorten the run-in time of accessories
Use the cable barrel adjuster to take up cable slack, not to move pads inward as they wear. Park Tool warns that using it to compensate for pad wear can eventually leave the pads unable to contact the rotor, resulting in no braking.

1Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems2Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches3Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsIf centering does not stop the rub
The rotor moves side to side
Recheck the rotor fastening and hub for play. If the rotor itself has lateral movement, careful truing may help when the bend is within the maker’s limits; a damaged or unsuitable rotor may need replacement. Centering the caliper around a rotor that moves significantly is unlikely to produce reliable clearance throughout a full rotation.

A piston sticks or sits too far out
If the brake was squeezed with the wheel or pad spacer removed, piston spacing may have changed. Shimano recommends using pad spacers when a wheel is removed. Its service instructions describe pushing protruding pistons straight back with a flat tool and say to avoid damaging them with a sharp tool. Follow the manual for your exact brake model; piston cleaning and resetting are not substitutes for diagnosing a leak or other damage.
There is also a rotor-specific exception: SRAM says HS2 rotors are 2 mm thick, compared with 1.85 mm for its other rotors, and specifies resetting piston spacing with the included pad spacer. That instruction applies to SRAM HS2, not to other rotor systems.

No position gives proper clearance
If the caliper has no adjustment range that aligns it with the rotor, the mount may not be square. Correcting a mount can involve specialized facing or machining, not routine caliper alignment; Park Tool identifies this as professional-shop work.
Work safely and know when to stop
- Keep fingers and tools clear of a spinning rotor. Shimano warns that it can cause serious injury.
- Let the rotor and caliper cool after braking before handling them.
- Do not add washers that were not designed for the brake system; they can alter pad alignment.
- Do not ride until you have confirmed the brake works properly. Stop and seek qualified service if the lever feels abnormal, braking is reduced, a rotor or mount is damaged, or the caliper cannot be secured and aligned reliably.
For procedures and model-specific limits, consult Park Tool’s hydraulic disc brake alignment guide, Park Tool’s mechanical disc brake alignment guide, the service manual for your brake, and—if you have an HS2 rotor—SRAM’s HS2 rubbing guidance.
