BETA Technologies did carry passengers aboard an electric aircraft—but the June 3, 2025 flight was a demonstration, not the launch of certified commercial airline service. The aircraft was BETA’s battery-electric ALIA CTOL, also designated the CX300. It flew from East Hampton, New York, to John F. Kennedy International Airport with passengers aboard.
What BETA Technologies actually unveiled
The announcement concerned a passenger-carrying demonstration flight by BETA’s ALIA CTOL/CX300, a fixed-wing, battery-electric airplane designed to take off and land on a conventional runway.

On June 3, 2025, the aircraft flew from East Hampton, New York, to JFK Airport. BETA’s timeline says four passengers were aboard, while Blade said its chief executive participated as a passenger. BETA and Blade described the event as the first passenger-carrying electric aircraft flight in the United States. BETA separately characterized it as the first passenger-carrying electric aircraft to land at a New York City airport.

What the ALIA CTOL/CX300 is
The CX300 is a conventional-takeoff-and-landing aircraft, or CTOL. It uses a runway much like a conventional airplane; it does not hover or take off vertically.
BETA’s public filings describe the aircraft as battery-electric and intended to operate from existing airports. The company gives it an approximate mission capability of 215 nautical miles and describes configurations carrying six people or up to 200 cubic feet of cargo.
Those figures should not be read as an unconditional “six-passenger, 215-nautical-mile” promise. Actual usable capacity depends on the certified configuration, crew requirements, passenger and baggage weight, battery condition, weather, wind, required reserves and other operating restrictions. A design-range figure is not a guaranteed route range under every payload and temperature.
The aircraft is aimed at short regional missions where a small aircraft can connect nearby cities, airports or specialized facilities without the fuel consumption and combustion emissions of a conventional aircraft.

CTOL versus VTOL: the distinction many headlines miss
BETA’s ALIA family includes two different aircraft concepts. The JFK flight involved the runway-based CTOL version, not the vertical-takeoff-and-landing version often associated with electric air taxis.
| Feature | ALIA CTOL/CX300 | ALIA VTOL/A250 |
|---|---|---|
| Takeoff and landing | Uses a conventional runway | Designed for vertical takeoff and landing |
| Involved in the JFK milestone? | Yes | No |
| Infrastructure model | Existing airports and runways | Greater flexibility for vertiport-like sites and locations without runways |
| Primary operational distinction | More familiar airport integration | Landing-site flexibility |
BETA’s filings identify separate certification pathways for the two configurations: the CX300 effort is described under FAA Part 23, while the VTOL aircraft is discussed under FAA Part 21.17(b). Calling the JFK aircraft an “eVTOL” or an “air taxi” without explaining that it was the CTOL model would be misleading.
What happened during the passenger flight?
- Date: June 3, 2025
- Route: East Hampton, New York, to JFK Airport
- Aircraft: BETA ALIA CTOL/CX300
- Passengers: Four, according to BETA’s timeline
- Purpose: Demonstration and market-survey operation
The flight showed that a battery-electric aircraft could carry people through existing airport infrastructure and operate in the airspace around the New York metropolitan area. It also demonstrated a practical difference between an empty aircraft test and a passenger-carrying operation: the aircraft had to fly with additional weight and occupants while completing an intercity mission.
BETA reported that the flight used approximately $7 worth of electricity. That is a company-reported estimate of the energy cost for the demonstration flight—not a ticket price and not a complete estimate of commercial operating cost.
The figure does not, by itself, account for the aircraft’s purchase or financing cost, depreciation, pilots, maintenance, insurance, airport charges, charging equipment, battery replacement, staffing, certification or other overhead. It therefore cannot be compared directly with an airline fare or treated as proof that every future passenger route will cost only a few dollars to operate.

Why the flight did not start an electric airline
BETA’s production-intent aircraft received FAA Special Airworthiness Certificates for continued flight testing and market-survey operations, according to the company’s filings. That kind of authorization can permit defined non-routine operations while an aircraft is being developed. It is not the same as unrestricted type certification for ordinary commercial passenger service.
Before passengers can routinely buy tickets, several additional steps are required:
- Type certification: The CX300 must complete the FAA certification process for its approved design and operating envelope.
- Configuration approval: The passenger interior, seats, restraints, systems and other equipment must be approved for the intended operation.
- Production approval and aircraft delivery: BETA must manufacture aircraft that conform to the certified design.
- Operator readiness: An airline or other operator needs qualified pilots, maintenance procedures, training, manuals, insurance and appropriate operating authority.
- Infrastructure: Airports need suitable charging equipment, electrical capacity, procedures and turnaround plans.
- Route and operational approvals: The operator must establish that particular routes can be flown safely with required reserves, weather margins and payload.
BETA’s earlier filings targeted CX300 certification around the end of 2026 or early 2027. Those were company targets, not completed certification dates. Later commercial announcements referred to airline service expected in 2029, which is likewise a planned deployment timeline rather than evidence that scheduled passenger service was already operating.
Why battery-electric aviation matters
A battery-electric aircraft has no in-flight combustion emissions. That can reduce local air pollution and eliminate the need to burn jet fuel during the flight itself. Electric propulsion also has fewer moving parts than a conventional combustion powertrain, which could eventually simplify some maintenance tasks.
The CTOL design has another practical advantage: it can use conventional airport runways rather than requiring a completely new network of urban landing sites. BETA is also developing charging equipment and describes a broader support business involving propulsion systems, batteries, training and aftermarket services.

However, “zero emissions” should be used precisely. The CX300 produces no in-flight combustion emissions, but the aircraft’s overall environmental impact also depends on how its electricity is generated, as well as battery manufacturing, battery replacement and aircraft production.
The limits of electric passenger aircraft
The central engineering constraint is battery energy density. Liquid aviation fuel stores substantially more usable energy by weight than today’s batteries, so an electric aircraft must balance battery mass against payload and range.
That creates several operational trade-offs:
- Range versus payload: Carrying more passengers or cargo leaves less margin for energy and reserves.
- Weather and temperature: Wind, cold conditions and other environmental factors can reduce practical range or payload.
- Reserves: Commercial aircraft must retain legally and operationally required energy reserves rather than using every available kilowatt-hour for the planned route.
- Charging: Turnaround time depends on the charger, electrical supply, battery state and the operator’s procedures.
- Battery life: Battery degradation and eventual replacement affect long-term economics.
- Small capacity: A six-person aircraft still requires a pilot and normal airport, maintenance and regulatory support, which can make economics challenging on some routes.
These constraints make the CX300 more naturally suited to short regional, cargo, medical and specialized missions than to replacing large airline aircraft. BETA has said its market-entry strategy prioritizes cargo, logistics and medical operations before broader passenger operations.

In July 2026, Loganair announced a plan involving five CX300 aircraft, with options for five more. The announcement said the aircraft were expected to enter service in 2029. That plan is evidence of intended airline deployment, not a guarantee that the aircraft will be certified, delivered or flying scheduled routes on that date.

As of August 16, 2026, the practical question for passengers is therefore not whether an electric aircraft has carried people—it has—but whether a certified aircraft and authorized operator are ready to offer repeatable, bookable service. The JFK flight did not establish that commercial service was available.
How to read future headlines about BETA
When evaluating a new announcement, check five details:
- Which aircraft? CX300 means the runway-based CTOL model; A250 refers to the VTOL model.
- What kind of flight? Demonstration, testing or market-survey language does not mean scheduled airline service.
- What authorization? A Special Airworthiness Certificate is different from full type certification and commercial operating approval.
- Whose “first”? Confirm whether the claim is limited to the United States, a particular airport or a specific aircraft category.
- What do the numbers include? Range, seating and electricity-cost figures are meaningful only when their payload, reserve, configuration and accounting assumptions are clear.
What the JFK flight proved—and what it did not
The demonstration proved that BETA’s battery-electric CTOL aircraft could carry passengers on a meaningful intercity flight and land at a major New York airport. It provided a visible demonstration of electric propulsion using familiar runway infrastructure.
It did not prove that the aircraft had completed full FAA type certification, that passengers could book regular service, that the $7 electricity estimate represented total operating cost, or that the aircraft could match a conventional regional airplane’s range and payload.
BETA’s milestone matters because commercial aviation begins with repeatable, certifiable operations—not a single flight alone. The next decisive milestones are certification, production, charging-network readiness and dependable service by an authorized operator.
