- Response and use: decide how much low-speed response matters for street driving, track use, or another purpose. Product descriptions use terms such as “quick-spooling,” but the sources do not provide a common test to quantify response.
- Fitment and installation: determine whether you want a stock-configuration or stock-frame option, and confirm the exact kit, model year, lines, hardware, and installation requirements.

How to interpret the power and airflow claims
Airflow in lb/min, a manufacturer’s horsepower estimate, and a seller’s WHP claim are not interchangeable measures. Garrett’s later catalog estimates 550 hp for the GTX3071R Stage 1 and 650 hp for the GTX3076R Stage 2; its older flyer instead estimates 475 hp for the GT3071R and 525 hp for the GT3076R. The published material does not explain the discrepancy sufficiently to reconcile it, so treat each number as belonging to its specific document rather than selecting one as the definitive rating.

Likewise, Forced Performance’s “over 475 WHP” for the FP Green and “over 525 WHP” for the FP Red are seller claims. The product listings do not establish a shared test setup or guarantee those results on your car. HKS’s listed boost pressure is an application specification, not a comparable horsepower figure. For a useful comparison, ask a qualified tuner to assess the complete planned setup rather than choosing by the biggest number.
Fitment and installation can change the decision
Garrett’s installation instructions cover its 2008+ Evo X kit, not every turbo listed here. They call for work involving oil and water lines, exhaust connections, reused factory components, and heat shields. In some housing configurations, the instructions also call for trimming a downpipe stud. They require appropriate support when raising the vehicle. Read the instructions for the exact kit before starting work, and use safe lifting equipment and suitable mechanical expertise.

Forced Performance lists an Evo oil supply line and marks it required for certain rebuild configurations, including its JB Red and JB Black upgrade paths. That does not establish that the same line or hardware requirement applies to every configuration. Confirm required oil and coolant lines, fittings, gaskets, and included hardware for the specific product and build before purchase; do not assume stock components interchange across kits.

Garrett’s August 24, 2009 notice says aggressive testing identified a high-temperature failure involving the internal wastegate arm and poppet valve. Garrett said it stopped production and sales until a solution was implemented, then described stronger materials and an anti-rotation design change. The notice stated: “All new units of the Garrett Mitsubishi Evolution X Turbocharger Upgrades feature the enhanced arm and valve.” This is historical manufacturer information, not evidence that current products fail.
