The best kayak trailer depends on how many boats you carry, the combined weight of boats and gear, and the rack and hitch setup your vehicle can tow. For recreational loads, compare the SylvanSport GO EASY configurations with Malone’s EcoLight; Malone’s 1,000-pound MegaSport Outfitter is aimed at commercial or large-scale hauling, not automatically a better choice for one or two kayaks. The figures below are manufacturer-published specifications, not results from independent side-by-side testing.
How to choose a kayak trailer for your load
Start with the complete loaded setup—not just the number of kayaks or the trailer’s headline capacity. Add the weight of every boat, rack or carrier, and other cargo, then check the specific trailer’s carrying limit and rack limit. Also confirm that your vehicle, hitch, electrical connection, crossbars, and carriers work together.
- Boat count and type: Identify the number and length of kayaks or canoes and how they will sit on the trailer.
- Total load: Include carriers and other cargo in your weight calculation. Where a trailer publishes both total carrying capacity and rack capacity, respect both limits.
- Fit: Check the trailer’s dimensions, hitch option, crossbars, and exact carrier model. A general compatibility statement is not confirmation that every accessory fits.
- Use case: A recreational setup and a trailer intended for commercial or large-scale transport serve different needs.
- Storage and towing: Consider the loaded dimensions and follow the trailer, vehicle, and accessory manufacturers’ instructions.
Compare the published specifications
The manufacturers describe these trailers for different capacities and use cases. Specifications can change, so confirm the selected model and package with the manufacturer before buying.
| Trailer | Manufacturer-published capacity | Other relevant details | Best fit by stated use |
|---|---|---|---|
| SylvanSport GO EASY | Base: 547 lb total carrying capacity; Essential: 522 lb; Ultimate: 477 lb. Each configuration lists a 300 lb rack capacity and 800 lb GVWR. | Published trailer weights are 253 lb (base), 278 lb (Essential), and 323 lb (Ultimate). Dimensions are 120 × 62 × 36 inches, excluding crossbars. The page lists a flat four-pin electrical connector and 1-1/4-inch or 2-inch hitch options; confirm the exact package. | Compare the three configurations against your load and accessory needs; the published capacities differ by version. |
| Malone EcoLight Sport Trailer | 400 lb capacity for a 14-foot canoe or kayak, according to Malone. | Malone describes it as its most affordable kayak trailer and says it is DOT and Transport Canada certified. Those are manufacturer statements; certification records were not independently verified here. | A recreational option to consider for a 14-foot canoe or kayak within the stated capacity. |
| Malone MegaSport Outfitter 3-Tier Trailer | 1,000 lb capacity, according to Malone. | Malone describes this model for commercial and large-scale kayak and canoe transport. | Large-scale or commercial hauling; its higher stated capacity does not make it the default choice for a small recreational load. |
These capacities and descriptions come from the manufacturers’ product pages. They do not establish comparative handling, durability, braking performance, or a universal ranking.

Which trailer makes sense for different kayak setups?
One or a few recreational boats
Compare the GO EASY configuration or EcoLight against the actual loaded weight, rack arrangement, and tow-vehicle fit. The GO EASY has different total carrying capacities across its base, Essential, and Ultimate versions, while all three list the same 300 lb rack capacity. Malone lists the EcoLight for a 14-foot canoe or kayak at 400 lb capacity. Neither headline figure alone confirms that a particular combination of boats and carriers will fit.
Commercial or large-scale transport
Malone positions the MegaSport Outfitter 3-Tier Trailer for commercial and large-scale hauling and lists a 1,000 lb capacity. Choose it only if the intended load and towing setup justify that use case; a larger stated capacity is not by itself evidence that it is safer or more suitable for every vehicle.

Check rack, hitch, and vehicle compatibility
SylvanSport says the GO EASY is designed to work with most bike or kayak rack systems and names Thule, Yakima, and Inno. That broad claim does not confirm fit for every carrier, kayak, or configuration. Verify the exact rack system, crossbar arrangement, and load limits with both the trailer and accessory manufacturers.
The GO EASY product page lists 1-1/4-inch and 2-inch hitch options. Check which hitch is included with the package under consideration and whether it matches your vehicle. The same page lists a flat four-pin electrical connector. Confirm the requirements for your vehicle and the exact trailer before towing.

Load and tow the trailer according to its instructions
- Calculate the full load. Count boats, carriers, and other cargo, and compare the sum with the trailer’s total carrying capacity and the relevant rack limit.
- Confirm the exact equipment. Check hitch, carrier, crossbar, and vehicle fit against the manufacturers’ instructions rather than relying on a general compatibility claim.
- Secure and inspect the connection. SylvanSport’s owner guide says to check that the trailer coupler is securely latched and to follow rack accessory equipment guidelines.
- Use the current manuals. Consult the owner guide for the exact trailer and the instructions for every rack accessory; do not exceed the stated overall capacity.
SylvanSport’s guide is available at its GO trailer owner guide. This article does not establish a universal safe highway speed or state-specific registration and towing requirements; check the applicable vehicle, trailer, and jurisdiction guidance for your trip.

SylvanSport’s buying guide compares trailers and promotes advantages for its own GO EASY. Because it is manufacturer-authored, treat those statements as sales claims rather than independent test results: SylvanSport’s kayak-trailer buying guide. The available specifications support comparing stated capacities, dimensions, and intended uses, but not naming one trailer the objectively best performer.
