Start with the size, load capacity and speed rating approved for your exact vehicle, then choose a tire category that suits your climate and driving: all-season for varied everyday use, winter for frequent deep snow, or all-terrain for regular off-pavement travel. Towing and hauling can change the tire requirements, but a tire upgrade does not increase the SUV’s payload or towing limits.
Which tires fit your large SUV?
Before comparing tread patterns or brands, check the Tire and Loading Information label on the vehicle and its owner’s manual. NHTSA advises using the original tire size or another size recommended by the vehicle manufacturer. Check the required load capacity and speed rating as well as the size; a tire that fits the wheel is not necessarily suitable for the SUV. NHTSA TireWise
- Match the required load capacity. The tire must meet or exceed the vehicle maker’s requirement. A higher load-range label does not raise the SUV’s GVWR, payload, or towing limit. Bridgestone’s load-rating guidance
- Do not casually change tire size. A taller tire can raise an already high vehicle package and center of gravity, potentially affecting stability during braking and cornering. Confirm any alternative size with the vehicle maker. Bridgestone’s plus-sizing guidance
- Use the vehicle’s recommended cold pressure. The maximum pressure printed on a tire sidewall is not the SUV’s target pressure. Follow the placard or manual and check pressure when tires are cold. NHTSA TireWise
Choose a tire category for your climate and roads
Each category makes a different compromise. Decide based on the conditions you actually encounter rather than assuming that a large SUV needs a more aggressive tire.
| Tire category | Best suited to | Trade-off to consider |
|---|---|---|
| All-season | Varied everyday conditions, with some mud and snow capability. | It is not equivalent to a dedicated winter tire in deep snow. NHTSA TireWise |
| Winter | Areas with frequent deep snow or sustained winter conditions. | It is designed for winter use rather than year-round warm-weather driving. If the winter tire has a lower speed rating, Bridgestone advises reducing speed and following the vehicle manual or placard. NHTSA TireWise Bridgestone’s speed-rating guidance |
| Summer | Warm conditions. | NHTSA says summer tires are not designed for below-freezing temperatures, snow, or ice. NHTSA TireWise |
| All-terrain | Mixed paved-road and off-road driving. | It trades some on-road specialization for off-road capability. NHTSA describes all-terrain tires as a compromise between on-road driving and off-road capability, mainly used on four-wheel-drive vehicles. NHTSA TireWise |
Are LT tires better for towing?
Not automatically. Some large SUVs use P-metric or Euro-metric tires selected to meet the vehicle’s load capacity. Replacing them with LT tires can change inflation requirements and affect TPMS service considerations; it should not be treated as a simple durability upgrade. Bridgestone’s load-rating guidance

For frequent towing or hauling, LT tires may be appropriate when their load capacity and construction meet the vehicle maker’s specifications. Toyo recommends considering LT tires with suitable load capacity and reinforced construction for those uses. Some 3/4- or 1-ton SUVs and trucks use LT tires as original equipment; Bridgestone warns against replacing OE LT tires with passenger tires that lack the required load capacity. In every case, the vehicle’s own load and towing limits still apply. Toyo tire-buying guide Bridgestone’s load-rating guidance
How to compare suitable tires
Once you know the approved fitment, compare candidates on the factors that matter for your use. These are decision criteria, not a universal model ranking.

- Product Overview: The Fullway HP108 are 245/50R20 102V SL-Standard Load, 4 Ply Rated Performance Tires Manufactured For Trucks & SUVs
- Driving Conditions: All Season Traction, UTQG 380AA
- Styling and Construction: Four Black Sidewall, Radial Construction, 20 Inch Tires
- Load Index and Speed Rating: Load Index 102 Supports up to 1874 lbs Per Tire and Speed Rating V Certified to 149 mph
- Additional Note: Tires Only - Rims/Wheels Not Included
- Size, construction and load: Confirm the approved size, load index or load range, and tire construction against the placard and manual.
- Climate: Consider how often you face deep snow, ice, freezing temperatures, or warm-weather driving.
- Road use: Weigh paved-road comfort and wet handling against the off-road traction you actually need.
- Workload: Account for how often and how heavily you tow or haul, while staying within the SUV’s ratings.
- Speed rating: Keep the manufacturer’s requirement in view, particularly if considering winter tires.
- Ratings: UTQG grades, where applicable, compare relative treadwear, wet-pavement traction, and temperature resistance. They are not a complete model ranking or a guaranteed mileage claim. NHTSA TireWise
- Ownership costs: Compare purchase price alongside maintenance needs and the likely trade-offs of the category; a rating alone cannot tell you which tire is best for your SUV.
Maintain the tires after installation
Check inflation monthly when the tires are cold, using the pressure listed on the vehicle placard or in the owner’s manual. NHTSA says tires should be replaced at 2/32 inch tread depth. It also reports that 511 people died in tire-related road crashes in 2024; that figure underscores why correct fitment and routine checks matter. NHTSA TireWise
Have new tires balanced, and pay attention to alignment if the SUV does not track straight or tire wear is uneven. Rotation may not be possible when front and rear tire sizes differ, so check the owner’s manual for the applicable schedule. NHTSA TireWise

Can you name the best tire model for your SUV?
Not from “large SUV” alone. A model recommendation depends on the vehicle’s year, make, model, trim, approved tire size and load requirements, as well as local climate and driving needs. Confirm those details before using a retailer’s fitment listing or choosing a specific tire.
