1Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minute2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitchesIf you want a clutch pedal in a new U.S.-market SUV for 2025, the shortlist is extremely short: the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler. Both are genuine four-wheel-drive off-roaders available in two- and four-door configurations, but they take different approaches. The Bronco has the stronger turbocharged engine, a seven-speed gearbox with a crawler gear, and better road manners. The Wrangler counters with solid axles, removable doors and roof panels, and a more traditional trail-focused design.
The Ford Bronco is the best all-around choice for most buyers. The Jeep Wrangler is the better fit if maximum trail hardware and classic open-air Jeep character take priority over highway comfort.
There are only two new manual SUVs for 2025
For the 2025 U.S. model year, the Ford Bronco and Jeep Wrangler were the only mainstream new SUVs available with a true manual transmission. That means a clutch pedal and a gear lever operated by the driver—not an automatic with paddle shifters, a selectable manual mode, or simulated gear changes.
The Ford Bronco Sport does not qualify. Its 2025 specifications list an eight-speed automatic transmission only. The 2025 Subaru Crosstrek also no longer offers a clutch-operated manual; its transmission is a continuously variable automatic.

That leaves two very different choices.
1. Best overall: 2025 Ford Bronco
The Bronco is the more versatile manual SUV. It combines serious off-road equipment with a more modern cabin and better on-road behavior than the Wrangler. Buyers can choose two- or four-door body styles, and the manual transmission uses a dedicated crawler gear for slow technical driving.
2025 Ford Bronco manual specifications
| Item | 2025 Bronco manual |
|---|---|
| Transmission | Getrag seven-speed manual with crawler gear |
| Engine | 2.3-liter EcoBoost turbocharged four-cylinder |
| Output | 300 hp and 325 lb-ft of torque |
| Drivetrain | Standard four-wheel drive |
| Body styles | Two-door and four-door |
| Maximum towing | 3,500 pounds |
| Maximum crawl ratio | 79.92:1 with standard 4×4; 94.75:1 with available advanced 4×4 |
The turbocharged 2.3-liter gives the Bronco more torque than the Wrangler’s naturally aspirated V6, and that torque arrives at lower engine speeds. The manual transmission’s 6.56:1 first gear is also considerably lower than the Wrangler’s 5.13:1 first gear. Together, those features make the Bronco easier to control when climbing over rocks or easing down steep terrain.
Which Bronco trims offer the manual?
The practical 2025 manual choices are the Base, Big Bend, and Badlands, subject to body-style and package restrictions. Ford’s lineup also includes versions that are automatic-only:

The Base returned for 2025 after being unavailable for the 2024 model year, although Ford identified it as a late-availability model. The Black Diamond name was also no longer a separate series; its equipment became a package for Big Bend.

Choose the Bronco Badlands with the seven-speed manual if off-road capability is the priority. It brings HOSS 2.0 suspension, Bilstein position-sensitive dampers, a front stabilizer-bar disconnect, and seven G.O.A.T. drive modes. The Sasquatch package can also be paired with a manual Bronco in certain configurations, so buyers should verify availability for the exact body style and series.
For a less expensive daily driver, the two-door Base or Big Bend manual makes more sense. Big Bend adds useful equipment without requiring the full off-road hardware of the Badlands.

Bronco manual limitations
- The seven-speed manual is available only with the 2.3-liter four-cylinder.
- The 2.7-liter and 3.0-liter V6 engines require the 10-speed automatic.
- Trail Control and Trail Turn Assist require the 10-speed automatic.
- A manual Bronco is rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, but its exact rating depends on configuration.
2. Best for traditional off-roading: 2025 Jeep Wrangler
The Wrangler remains the specialist’s choice. Its solid front and rear axles, removable doors, removable roof panels, short-wheelbase two-door body, and extensive aftermarket support make it particularly appealing for technical trails. It is less polished on pavement than the Bronco, but that compromise is part of the Wrangler’s design.
2025 Jeep Wrangler manual specifications
| Item | Two-door manual | Four-door manual |
|---|---|---|
| Transmission | D478 six-speed manual with overdrive | |
| Engine | 3.6-liter Pentastar V6 | |

| Maximum towing | 2,000 pounds | 3,500 pounds |
| Fuel tank | 17.5 gallons | 21.5 gallons |
The Wrangler manual is paired with the naturally aspirated 3.6-liter V6, which produces 285 hp and 260 lb-ft of torque. It does not use the 2.0-liter turbo-four. The manual is also unavailable with the 4xe plug-in hybrid and the 6.4-liter V8-powered Rubicon 392.

- Sport
- Sport S
- Willys
- Rubicon
- Rubicon X
The Sport S is the sensible value choice, while the Willys provides a useful balance of trail equipment and price. The Rubicon is the choice for difficult terrain, with a Rock-Trac transfer case, a 4:1 low-range ratio, and available 4.88:1 axle gearing. In its most capable manual configuration, Jeep lists a crawl ratio of up to 100:1.
Best Wrangler configuration
Choose a two-door Sport or Willys manual for the most traditional Jeep experience and the greatest maneuverability on tight trails. Choose the four-door Willys if you need additional passenger and cargo space. The Rubicon manual is the right answer for buyers who routinely use lockers, low-range gearing, and axle articulation on demanding trails.
Wrangler manual limitations
- The manual is tied to the 3.6-liter V6 rather than the turbocharged four-cylinder.
- The two-door manual can tow up to 2,000 pounds; the four-door manual is rated for up to 3,500 pounds.
- The 4xe and Rubicon 392 are automatic-only.
- Solid axles and removable-body hardware contribute to more road noise, slower steering response, and a less settled highway ride than the Bronco.
Ford Bronco vs. Jeep Wrangler manual
| Category | 2025 Ford Bronco | 2025 Jeep Wrangler |
|---|---|---|
| Manual transmission | Seven-speed with crawler gear | Six-speed |
| Manual engine | 2.3-liter turbocharged four-cylinder | 3.6-liter naturally aspirated V6 |

| Manual body styles | Two-door and four-door | Two-door and four-door |
| Manual towing | Up to 3,500 pounds | 2,000 pounds two-door; 3,500 pounds four-door |
| Biggest strength | Versatility, power, and better road manners | Traditional trail hardware and open-air design |
| Biggest weakness | Manual restricted to the 2.3-liter engine | Noisier and less refined on pavement |
Which manual SUV should you buy?
- Choose the Bronco if you split your time between commuting, highway driving, towing, and off-road recreation. Its turbo-four makes more torque, its crawler gear offers precise low-speed control, and its independent front suspension gives it more composed road manners.
- Choose the Wrangler if removable doors and roof panels, solid axles, short-wheelbase trail ability, and traditional Jeep character are more important than comfort on pavement.
- Choose a two-door model if tight trail maneuverability and a smaller footprint matter most.
- Choose a four-door model if you regularly carry passengers or need more cargo room. The four-door Wrangler also has the higher 3,500-pound manual towing rating.
