The best SUV for most men is the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport because it combines standard all-wheel drive, a 285-hp V6, 5,000 pounds of towing capacity, useful ground clearance, and daily-driver comfort without the compromises of a truck-based off-roader. But the right choice changes with the brief: choose the Toyota 4Runner for rugged capability, the Ford Bronco for serious trails, the Porsche Macan GTS for performance, the Ford Expedition for towing and family space, or the Rivian R1S for an adventure-oriented EV.
“For men” is not a mechanical category, and horsepower is not a measure of masculinity. In this guide, the label means a buyer who may value assertive styling, performance, towing, outdoor capability, useful cargo space, a premium cabin, or a vehicle that feels substantial. The best SUV is the one that matches how you actually spend your time—not one that merely looks tough in a dealership photo.
This guide covers new SUVs sold in the United States for the 2026 model year, with information current to August 10, 2026. Prices are starting MSRPs before destination charges, taxes, registration, dealer fees, options, and applicable regional charges.
Quick answers: the best SUVs for men in 2026
| Best for | Recommended SUV and trim | Key facts | Main compromise |
|---|---|---|---|
| Best overall | 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport | $48,650; 285-hp V6; standard AWD; 5,000-lb towing; 8.3 inches of clearance | Not a low-range, body-on-frame rock crawler |
| Best rugged all-rounder | 2026 Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road | Up to 278 hp or 326 hp hybrid; up to 6,000-lb towing; up to 10.1 inches of clearance; available 4WD | Trucklike ride, noise, and expensive upper trims |
| Best serious off-roader | 2026 Ford Bronco Badlands with Sasquatch | 300-hp four-cylinder or 330-hp V6; available locking differentials, removable roof and doors, and up to 37 inches of water-fording capability | Road noise, ride quality, and fuel economy |
| Best adventure value | 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness | $44,995; 260-hp turbo; standard AWD; 9.5 inches of clearance; 3,500-lb towing; 21/27 mpg city/highway | More wagon-like and less athletic than a Bronco or 4Runner |
| Best compact SUV with personality | 2026 Mazda CX-50 Turbo | Starts at $29,900; 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel; standard AWD; up to 3,500-lb towing when properly equipped | Tight rear seat and premium fuel for maximum turbo output |
| Best efficient mainstream SUV | 2026 Toyota RAV4 Hybrid | $31,900 starting MSRP; up to 47/40 mpg city/highway; up to 37.8 cu. ft. of cargo space; up to 3,500-lb towing on applicable configurations | Efficiency and practicality matter more than serious trail ability |
| Best large SUV for towing | 2026 Ford Expedition 4×4 with Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package | Up to 9,600-lb towing; 400 or 440 hp; 108.5 cu. ft. behind the first row | Large, expensive, and configuration-sensitive |
| Best full-size value and presence | 2026 Nissan Armada | $58,840; 425 hp; 516 lb-ft; up to 8,500-lb towing; seating for up to eight | Premium fuel and weak 16/20-mpg economy on several configurations |
| Best performance SUV | 2026 Porsche Macan GTS | $94,200; 434 hp; 0–60 mph in 4.3 seconds; 169-mph top track speed; 5,291-lb braked towing | Options, tires, brakes, maintenance, and fuel are expensive |
| Best adventure EV | 2026 Rivian R1S Dual | Starts at $83,990; 329–410 miles of listed EPA-estimated range depending on configuration; 7,700-lb towing | High price, charging dependency, and substantial range loss while towing |
| Best three-row EV for range | 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 | $58,955; up to 335 miles of EPA range; up to 422 hp; 3,500–5,000-lb towing depending on trim | Less trail-focused than the R1S |
| Best three-row EV value | 2026 Kia EV9 | $54,900; seats up to seven; up to 305 miles of EPA range on applicable configurations; up to 5,000-lb towing on select AWD trims | Towing can substantially reduce range |
Bottom line from the table: start with the Passport TrailSport if you want one SUV that does many things well. Move to the 4Runner or Bronco when the trail—not the commute—is the priority. If “sporty” means genuinely quick and engaging, buy the Macan GTS rather than an ordinary crossover with an appearance package.

How this list was chosen
This is a use-case ranking, not a claim that one vehicle is universally superior. The editorial weighting is:
- Capability: 20%. Towing, traction, clearance, off-road hardware, and bad-weather performance.
- Everyday usability: 20%. Ride quality, visibility, maneuverability, cabin comfort, technology, and ease of ownership.
- Performance: 15%. Acceleration, braking, steering, chassis control, and power delivery—not just horsepower.
- Cargo and passenger utility: 15%. Usable space, seating flexibility, access, and the ability to carry real gear.
- Safety: 15%. Current crash-test and crash-avoidance information, with model-year qualifications.
- Value and ownership: 15%. Price, fuel or charging costs, tires, brakes, service, insurance, depreciation, and warranty considerations.
These percentages are an editorial framework, not a scientific measurement. They also explain why the most expensive or powerful SUV does not automatically win. A vehicle that spends 95% of its life on pavement should not be judged by the same standard as one intended for technical trails or heavy towing.
The best SUVs for men, in detail
1. 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport: best overall
Best for: the buyer who wants a confident-looking, two-row SUV for commuting, road trips, dogs, camping gear, snow, and occasional trails.
The Passport TrailSport is the strongest all-around recommendation because it avoids the biggest weaknesses of both soft crossovers and serious off-roaders. Its 285-hp 3.5-liter V6, standard AWD, and 5,000-lb towing rating give it meaningful utility. The TrailSport adds all-terrain tires, off-road-tuned suspension, and Tow, Trail, and Sand drive modes. Honda lists 8.3 inches of ground clearance, and the TrailSport starts at $48,650 before destination and other charges. See Honda’s 2026 Passport specifications and trim comparison for the equipment breakdown.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
On pavement, its crossover-based design should make it easier to live with than a Bronco or heavily equipped 4Runner. It also gives you two rows with room for adults, gear, and dogs without forcing you to pay for a rarely used third row.
Recommended trim: TrailSport. The TrailSport Elite adds luxury equipment, but the standard TrailSport is the better capability-per-dollar choice unless you specifically want the extra comfort and convenience features.
What it does better than the rugged alternatives: It is the more sensible daily driver. Standard AWD, a useful tow rating, and real all-terrain equipment cover the needs of most owners who describe themselves as outdoorsy but are not regularly driving difficult rock trails.
Who should skip it: buyers who need a low-range 4WD system, locking differentials, serious underbody protection, extreme articulation, or frequent technical off-roading. The Passport is a capable crossover, not a rock crawler.

2. 2026 Toyota 4Runner: best rugged all-rounder
Best for: buyers who want a traditional SUV shape, genuine 4WD capability, high clearance, towing strength, and a vehicle that feels more trucklike than a crossover.
The 4Runner is the clearest answer for someone who means “rugged” literally. Toyota’s current 4Runner uses a 2.4-liter turbocharged engine producing up to 278 hp and 317 lb-ft, or an available i-FORCE MAX hybrid producing up to 326 hp and 465 lb-ft. Toyota lists up to 10.1 inches of ground clearance, available seating for seven, and up to 6,000 pounds of towing capacity. The current Toyota consumer page lists a $42,070 starting MSRP before destination and fees. Specifications and configuration details are available on the Toyota 4Runner page and in the 2026 4Runner brochure.
A previous Toyota newsroom release listed a $41,570 starting MSRP, which illustrates why you should use the live configurator and window sticker rather than an older press-release price.
Recommended trim: TRD Off-Road for most capability-focused buyers. Trailhunter and TRD Pro make sense when their factory overlanding or high-clearance equipment directly matches your use; they are not automatically the best value.
What it does better than the Passport: the body-on-frame chassis, available 4WD, greater clearance, and more specialized off-road trims make it the better choice for rougher terrain. It also has more towing headroom.
What it does worse: the 4Runner’s trucklike ride, body motion, road noise, and large all-terrain tires can be tiring on long highway trips. Upper trims can approach luxury-SUV pricing, while aggressive tires cost more and can reduce fuel economy. A 4Runner with an available third row is still not a substitute for a family-focused three-row SUV; test the actual seats and cargo space.
3. 2026 Ford Bronco: best serious off-roader
Best for: people who will actually use removable doors and roof panels, drive challenging trails, and value trail hardware over quiet highway manners.
The Bronco is the most purpose-built off-roader in this group. Ford lists 300 hp and 325 lb-ft for the 2.3-liter engine and 330 hp and 415 lb-ft for the available 2.7-liter V6. Most models are rated to tow up to 3,500 pounds, while the Raptor reaches 4,500 pounds. Available Sasquatch equipment, locking differentials, aggressive tires, and the Bronco’s removable-roof and removable-door design make it substantially more than an appearance package. Ford also lists up to 37 inches of water-fording capability. See the Ford Bronco specifications for body-style and package-specific figures.
Do not quote one universal Bronco ground-clearance number. Ford publishes different maximum-clearance figures depending on body style, suspension, tire, and package. The same rule applies to approach and departure angles, towing, and payload.
Recommended trim: four-door Badlands with the Sasquatch package for serious trail use. A lower trim is more sensible if your “off-road” driving mostly means gravel roads, beach access, snow, and occasional forest roads.
What it does better than the 4Runner: the open-air design and specialized trail hardware create a more immersive off-road experience. The available manual transmission is also unusual among modern SUVs.

- High Quality Material: The coaster is made of environmentally friendly silicone, safe, non-toxic and odorless. Soft with toughness, easily embedded in the cup holder. Very durable, wear-resistant, long service life. High temperature resistance, can withstand 100 ℃ high temperature water cups.
- Wide Compatibility: The coaster has a diameter of 3.15 inches and a height of 1.18 inches, which is widely used in most vehicles, such as SUV, sedan, MPV, etc., as long as the size fits your car cup holder.
- Protection Function: Our car cup holder coaster has a carry handle design and a stand-up ring edge on its edge to effectively prevent food crumbs, drinks and water from leaking out and preventing the car cup holder from getting dirty.Meanwhile,Thickened design effectively prevents the cup holder from being scratched by the cup when driving on bumpy roads and eliminates the annoying thumping sound, making your journey more enjoyable.
- Easy to Use and Clean: With embedded installation, you just need to put it flat on the car cupholder. It is also very quick to remove, there is a small bump on the coaster, pinch it and you can easily remove the coaster. It is very easy to clean, rinse with water or wipe with a wet towel (be careful not to clean with sharp tools).
- 100% Satisfaction: Our products have quality assurance, if you have questions or are not satisfied after receiving the product, don't worry, please contact us as soon as possible, we provide after-sales service.
What it does worse: removable panels increase wind noise and complexity. Large tires and off-road suspension compromise highway comfort, and fuel economy is not a Bronco strength. A Bronco’s aggressive styling does not make it the best daily driver automatically.
4. 2026 Subaru Outback Wilderness: best adventure value
Best for: buyers who want clearance, standard AWD, cargo flexibility, and occasional trail capability without accepting the noise and ride compromises of a body-on-frame SUV.
The Outback Wilderness starts at $44,995 and uses a 260-hp turbocharged Boxer engine, standard Symmetrical AWD, electronically controlled dampers, all-terrain tires, and 9.5 inches of ground clearance. Its towing capacity is 3,500 pounds, and Subaru lists 21 city/27 highway mpg for the Wilderness. The Outback Wilderness model page and 2026 features page contain the equipment details.
The Outback is more wagon-like than SUV-like, which is either its appeal or its problem. Its lower, longer shape can be useful for outdoor gear and road trips, while the Wilderness hardware makes it a credible choice for snow, rough roads, and moderate trails.
Recommended Free Tools
Recommended trim: Wilderness if you want the real hardware. If you spend nearly all of your time on pavement, a non-Wilderness Outback may be the more rational choice; do not pay for off-road equipment you will not use.
Who should skip it: drivers seeking strong acceleration, serious rock-crawling capability, or a high seating position and upright proportions. The Outback is practical and adventurous, but it is not as athletic as the CX-50 Turbo or as technically capable as the 4Runner and Bronco.
5. 2026 Mazda CX-50 Turbo: best compact SUV with style and driving appeal
Best for: one or two people who want a more stylish, enjoyable compact SUV for commuting, road trips, and light outdoor use.
The CX-50 starts at $29,900. The naturally aspirated engine makes 187 hp, while the turbocharged version produces 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel. On regular fuel, Mazda lists 227 hp and 310 lb-ft. AWD and Sport/Off-Road drive modes are standard. Properly equipped turbo models can tow up to 3,500 pounds when fitted with Mazda towing accessories. Confirm the exact equipment on Mazda’s CX-50 specifications page and its 2026 pricing and packaging information.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThe CX-50 is one of the better choices for a buyer who wants personality without moving into an expensive performance SUV. Its road manners and cabin presentation give it more character than a purely utilitarian compact crossover.
Recommended trim: CX-50 Turbo if acceleration matters; non-turbo Meridian Edition if you mainly want the appearance and light-adventure equipment without premium-fuel costs.
Important compromise: the rear seat and cargo area are tighter than those of a Passport or RAV4. Maximum turbo output requires premium gasoline, and the CX-50’s crossover platform is not a replacement for low-range 4WD.
6. 2026 Toyota RAV4: best efficient mainstream SUV
Best for: commuters, couples, and small families who want useful space, strong fuel economy, an elevated driving position, and reasonable ownership costs.
Toyota lists a $31,900 starting MSRP for the 2026 RAV4, up to 47 city/40 highway mpg, up to 37.8 cubic feet of cargo capacity, and up to 3,500 pounds of towing for applicable configurations. Use the Toyota RAV4 page to verify the specific hybrid trim, tow rating, availability, and current pricing.
The RAV4 belongs on a list for men because practical ownership is a legitimate priority. It is easier to park and cheaper to fuel than the larger choices, while still providing room for camping equipment, sports gear, a dog, or a small trailer.
Recommended trim: choose the hybrid configuration that provides the towing rating you need. Do not assume that every 2026 trim has the same tow capability, tires, clearance, or fuel-economy result.
Who should skip it: anyone who needs serious trail hardware or wants a genuinely sporty chassis. Rugged exterior trim, black wheels, and adventure branding do not create body-on-frame construction, a low-range transfer case, or locking differentials.

The 2026 redesign also makes local availability and early ownership experience worth checking before you buy. A new generation can bring desirable technology and efficiency, but it also means less long-term history than an established model.
7. 2026 Ford Expedition: best large SUV for towing and family utility
Best for: large families, boat owners, people who regularly tow, and buyers who need maximum passenger and cargo volume.
The Expedition is the strongest conventional choice here for serious family hauling. Ford lists up to 9,600 pounds of towing for select 4×4 models equipped with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. The standard engine produces 400 hp and 480 lb-ft, while the high-output engine produces 440 hp and 510 lb-ft. In the standard-length Expedition, Ford lists 108.5 cubic feet behind the first row, 69.9 cubic feet behind the second row, and 22.9 cubic feet behind the third row. See Ford’s Expedition specifications and technology page.
The 22.9-cubic-foot figure behind the third row is more useful than a generic statement that an SUV has “lots of space,” but you should still test it with your own stroller, cooler, golf bags, dog crate, or sports equipment. Long-wheelbase models add cargo room but are more difficult to maneuver and park.

Recommended trim: standard-wheelbase 4×4 with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package if towing is the priority. The Tremor adds 33-inch all-terrain tires and 10.6 inches of clearance, but its maximum towing rating is lower than the regular-wheelbase maximum. Buy the Tremor only when trail capability matters more than the highest tow number.
Critical towing qualification: 9,600 pounds does not describe every Expedition. Trailer weight is limited by the exact engine, drivetrain, wheelbase, axle, tow package, payload, tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and hitch equipment. Confirm the door-jamb payload label and owner’s manual.
8. 2026 Nissan Armada: best full-size value and presence
Best for: buyers who want a large, imposing, body-on-frame SUV with strong torque, up to eight seats, and serious towing ability at a lower starting price than some luxury alternatives.
The 2026 Armada starts at $58,840 and uses a 425-hp twin-turbo V6 producing 516 lb-ft of torque. Nissan lists body-on-frame construction, seating for up to eight, and up to 8,500 pounds of towing. The Armada specifications page and Armada overview provide the configuration details.
The PRO-4X is the trim to investigate for off-road use. SV or SL trims make more sense for value-oriented towing and family transportation. The NISMO version raises output to 460 hp, but more power does not automatically make it the better towing or trail choice.
Main ownership warning: Nissan specifies premium gasoline, and several configurations are listed at only 16 city/20 highway mpg. The Armada may offer strong value against luxury SUVs, but it should not be described as economical simply because its starting price is competitive.
9. 2026 Porsche Macan GTS: best performance SUV
Best for: an enthusiast who wants sports-car acceleration and steering response in a practical-ish crossover shape.
The 2026 gasoline Macan GTS starts at $94,200. Porsche lists 434 hp, a 0–60-mph time of 4.3 seconds, a 169-mph top track speed, standard AWD, and 5,291 pounds of braked towing capacity. The relevant figures are in Porsche’s Macan configurator and technical data document.
Do these 3 things before closing this tab:
1Fix the driver behind crashes, sound loss and screen glitches2Repair Windows errors before they cause bigger problems3Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteThis is the right answer when “sporty” means genuinely fast and engaging. Evaluate performance SUVs by steering, braking, chassis tuning, seat support, transmission response, and tires—not just by the horsepower figure on the window sticker.
Recommended trim: the Macan S is the rational performance choice; the GTS is the enthusiast choice for buyers willing to pay for the additional performance focus.
Trade-offs: Porsche options can rapidly increase the price. Premium fuel, performance tires, brakes, maintenance, and insurance can make ownership dramatically more expensive than a Passport or CX-50. Its cargo area is also much smaller than a Passport, 4Runner, or Expedition. Cross-shop it with vehicles such as the BMW X5 and Genesis GV70, but compare total ownership cost and actual driving feel rather than badge prestige alone.
10. 2026 Rivian R1S: best adventure-oriented EV
Best for: buyers who want an electric SUV with three-row utility, serious acceleration, high towing capacity, and a stronger outdoor identity than most electric crossovers.
Rivian lists the 2026 R1S Dual from $83,990, available EPA-estimated ranges from 329 to 410 miles depending on battery and wheel configuration, and 7,700 pounds of towing. Higher-output Tri and Quad versions offer substantially more power. Use Rivian’s R1S configurator to check the exact battery, wheels, range, price, and tow equipment.
The R1S is one of the few EVs here that makes adventure capability part of its identity rather than merely offering an optional appearance package. It is also exceptionally quick in higher-output configurations.
Recommended trim: Dual with the larger battery for the best balance of range and value. Choose Tri or Quad only if extreme acceleration is worth the added cost.
EV-specific compromises: towing can materially reduce range, wheel and tire selection affects range and ride, and replacement tires can be expensive. Verify local service coverage before purchase. On a long towing trip, charging availability, trailer-friendly station layout, cold weather, headwinds, trailer height, and route elevation may matter more than the EPA number.
11. 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 and Kia EV9: the best three-row EV alternatives
Best for: families who want three rows, quiet electric power, and lower operating emissions without giving up road-trip range.
The 2026 Hyundai Ioniq 9 starts at $58,955. Hyundai lists EPA-estimated range of 335 miles for the S trim, 320 miles for SE and SEL trims, and 311 miles for upper trims. Output reaches 422 hp, while towing ranges from 3,500 to 5,000 pounds depending on configuration. The Ioniq 9 is the better choice of the two when maximum range and long-distance family use are the priorities.
The 2026 Kia EV9 starts at $54,900, seats up to seven, and offers up to 305 miles of EPA range on applicable configurations. Select AWD trims can tow up to 5,000 pounds. Kia’s trim comparison is essential because towing and range vary by version.
Choose the EV9 for its lower starting price, distinctive design, and available fast-charging ecosystem. Choose the Ioniq 9 for its longer listed range and more road-trip-oriented brief. Neither is as trail-focused as the R1S. Kia explicitly warns that towing may significantly reduce electric range, so treat the tow rating and the practical towing range as separate facts.

Choose the right SUV size
Subcompact and compact SUVs
Compact SUVs are usually the best fit for one or two people, urban driving, lower running costs, and easier parking. The Mazda CX-50, Toyota RAV4, Honda CR-V, and Subaru Forester belong here. They can carry camping gear, sports equipment, and dogs, but rear-seat space and trailer stability should be checked rather than assumed.
Two-row midsize SUVs
A two-row midsize SUV is often the sweet spot for gear, adult passengers, dogs, and outdoor use. The Honda Passport, Toyota 4Runner, Subaru Outback, Ford Bronco, and Lexus GX are relevant choices. A two-row vehicle can provide more useful cargo flexibility than a three-row SUV whose rearmost seats remain folded most of the time.
Three-row midsize SUVs
Three-row SUVs make sense for families, but the third row and cargo area must be physically tested. The Hyundai Ioniq 9, Kia EV9, Hyundai Palisade, Kia Telluride, Honda Pilot, and Nissan Pathfinder are examples. Bring your actual child seats, measure the space behind the third row, and check whether adults can enter without awkward climbing.
Full-size SUVs
Full-size models such as the Ford Expedition, Chevrolet Tahoe, Nissan Armada, GMC Yukon, and Jeep Grand Wagoneer are best when passenger volume, towing, or maximum cargo matters more than fuel economy and parking convenience. Their size is a benefit on the highway and a liability in older garages, urban lots, narrow trails, and crowded fuel stations.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Off-road capability: separate hardware from image
Many SUVs marketed toward adventurous buyers have dark wheels, black exterior trim, roof rails, aggressive bumpers, skid-plate styling, and “adventure” names. Those features may make a vehicle look more assertive, but they do not necessarily improve its ability to cross difficult terrain.
Functional off-road equipment includes:
- A low-range transfer case for slow, technical terrain.
- Locking differentials for maintaining traction when a wheel loses contact or grip.
- Disconnecting stabilizer bars where applicable to improve articulation.
- Underbody protection and properly designed recovery points.
- All-terrain tires and a full-size spare.
- Hill-descent control and terrain-specific drive modes.
- Useful approach, breakover, and departure angles.
- Suspension travel and articulation appropriate to the intended trail.
A crossover with an off-road package may be ideal for forest roads, snow, sand, and rough access roads. It may still be inappropriate for deep ruts, repeated rock-crawling, heavy articulation, or trails where underbody impacts are likely.
AWD versus 4WD
AWD is generally the better fit for pavement, rain, snow, and mixed conditions. It works well for drivers who want additional traction without changing the vehicle’s everyday behavior.
Part-time 4WD with low range is more useful for slow, technical terrain. A locking rear differential can matter more in a specific off-road situation than a larger horsepower number. Tires often have more influence on real-world traction than the badge on the liftgate.
Four-wheel drive does not make an SUV stop sooner on ice. Speed, tires, road conditions, and braking technique still determine stopping distance.
Towing: the number on the brochure is only the beginning
Never compare SUVs using maximum trailer weight alone. Check all of the following:
- Maximum trailer weight for the exact engine, drivetrain, wheelbase, axle, and package.
- Payload capacity, which must include passengers, luggage, accessories, and trailer tongue weight.
- Gross combined weight rating for the loaded SUV and loaded trailer together.
- Tongue-weight and hitch-receiver limits.
- Trailer-brake requirements and whether a brake controller is included or optional.
- Cooling equipment and the exact Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package.
- Weight-distributing hitch requirements.
- Wheel and tire configuration, which may change the rating.
The door-jamb payload label and owner’s manual are more important than a generic dealer brochure. For example, the Expedition’s 9,600-pound maximum applies only to select 4×4 models with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. The Armada’s 8,500-pound maximum and the 4Runner’s 6,000-pound maximum are also configuration-dependent in practical use.
What electric towing changes
An EV can have a high tow rating and still be a poor long-distance tow vehicle for a particular owner. A tall or heavy trailer increases aerodynamic drag, cold weather reduces efficiency, headwinds and hills add demand, and charging stations may be difficult to access with a trailer attached. Some charging locations require the driver to disconnect the trailer before using the space.
Recommended Free Tools
Before choosing an R1S, Ioniq 9, or EV9 for towing, map the real route, identify trailer-friendly fast chargers, estimate a substantial range buffer, and determine whether home charging is available. The EV9 specification page specifically warns that towing may significantly reduce electric range.
Safety: use the right test and the right model year
IIHS and NHTSA are not interchangeable. IIHS awards are based on a defined collection of crashworthiness, headlight, pedestrian crash-prevention, and vehicle-to-vehicle crash-prevention results. The 2026 IIHS award criteria require good ratings in small-overlap front, moderate-overlap front, and side tests, acceptable or good headlights, good pedestrian front-crash prevention, and acceptable or good vehicle-to-vehicle front-crash prevention.
NHTSA’s list of vehicles selected for 2026 testing is not itself a safety rating. A vehicle can be selected before a public score is available, and the absence of a published score does not automatically mean poor crash protection. Consult NHTSA’s 5-Star Safety Ratings separately from IIHS results.
Do not carry a safety award from one model year backward or forward without checking. A redesign, changed standard equipment, revised headlights, or different crash-avoidance system can change the result. The same caution applies to build dates and trim-specific equipment.

New 2026 SUV
A new SUV brings the latest safety systems, warranty coverage, technology, and factory configuration. The disadvantages are a higher purchase price, faster early depreciation, and less long-term reliability history for redesigned vehicles. The 2026 RAV4, for example, deserves a local availability and early-ownership check because it is a new-generation model.
Certified pre-owned
A certified pre-owned SUV may offer better value and avoid some initial depreciation, but certification programs are not identical. Read the actual warranty terms, inspection checklist, roadside coverage, deductible, and transfer rules. Do not assume that a dealer’s “certified” label provides the same protection across brands.
Older body-on-frame SUVs
An older 4Runner, Lexus GX, Toyota Land Cruiser, or similar SUV may provide a simpler and more established design at a lower purchase price. It may also have worse fuel economy, older driver-assistance technology, more wear, and expensive suspension, tire, or underbody repairs. Condition and maintenance history matter more than the badge.
Used luxury SUVs
A used BMW X5, Lexus RX, Lexus GX, or comparable luxury SUV can look like a bargain beside its original MSRP. Budget for premium tires, brakes, maintenance, insurance, electronics, and unexpected repairs. A low purchase price does not create low ownership cost.

Other used alternatives worth researching by exact year and powertrain include the previous-generation Toyota 4Runner, Lexus GX 460 or GX 550, Honda Passport, Toyota Land Cruiser, Ford Bronco, BMW X5, Lexus RX, and Subaru Outback Wilderness. Do not call any of them universally reliable without checking the model year, engine, service records, recall history, and independent inspection.
Trim levels worth buying
- Honda Passport: TrailSport before TrailSport Elite for capability per dollar. Buy the Elite for luxury equipment, not because it is automatically better off-road.
- Toyota 4Runner: TRD Off-Road is the value choice. Trailhunter or TRD Pro make sense for buyers who genuinely need their factory overlanding or high-clearance equipment.
- Ford Bronco: Badlands with Sasquatch for serious trail use. Do not pay for maximum equipment if your driving is limited to gravel and snow.
- Subaru Outback: Wilderness for actual clearance, tires, suspension, and towing hardware; otherwise consider a road-oriented trim.
- Mazda CX-50: Turbo for performance; Meridian Edition without the turbo if appearance and light adventure matter more than maximum output.
- Ford Expedition: standard-wheelbase 4×4 with the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package for towing. Tremor is the choice only when off-road capability justifies reduced maximum trailer capacity.
- Nissan Armada: PRO-4X for off-road use; SV or SL for value-oriented family and towing duties.
- Porsche Macan: Macan S is the rational performance pick; GTS is for the enthusiast who accepts the cost.
- Rivian R1S: Dual with the larger battery for range and value; Tri or Quad for extreme acceleration.
Direct comparisons
Honda Passport TrailSport versus Toyota 4Runner
Choose the Passport when most of your driving is on pavement and you want comfortable two-row utility with useful trail and towing ability. Choose the 4Runner when you value body-on-frame construction, available 4WD, higher clearance, specialized off-road trims, and a more trucklike character. The Passport’s 5,000-pound tow rating is useful, but the 4Runner’s maximum reaches 6,000 pounds. The 4Runner asks you to accept more noise, ride motion, tire cost, and upper-trim expense.
Toyota 4Runner versus Ford Bronco
The 4Runner is the more conventional long-distance and family SUV, with available seating for seven and a 6,000-pound maximum tow rating. The Bronco is the more serious and immersive off-roader, especially in Badlands/Sasquatch form, with removable roof and doors, available manual transmission, locking differentials, and up to 37 inches of water-fording capability. Choose based on how much trail hardware you will use, not which shape appears more rugged.
Subaru Outback Wilderness versus Mazda CX-50 Turbo
The Outback Wilderness has more clearance, standard AWD, a 3,500-pound tow rating, and a 260-hp turbo engine. The CX-50 Turbo starts lower, has up to 256 hp and 320 lb-ft on premium fuel, and emphasizes road manners and compact-SUV style. Choose the Subaru for cargo-oriented adventure and rougher access roads; choose the Mazda for a tighter, more polished driving experience and a lower entry price.
Quick wins for a faster PC:
Scan for outdated or missing drivers - takes under a minuteDriver Scan →Clear out junk files and repair common Windows errorsFree Scan →Ford Expedition versus Nissan Armada
The Expedition is the better choice when maximum towing and cargo flexibility are the priority: up to 9,600 pounds with the correct package and 108.5 cubic feet behind the first row. The Armada offers 425 hp, 516 lb-ft, seating for up to eight, body-on-frame construction, and an $58,840 starting MSRP. The Armada’s premium-fuel requirement and 16/20-mpg economy on several configurations are important counterweights to its price and power.
Rivian R1S versus Hyundai Ioniq 9 versus Kia EV9
The R1S is the adventure specialist, with up to 7,700 pounds of towing and a listed range extending as high as 410 miles depending on configuration. The Ioniq 9 is the long-distance three-row choice, with up to 335 miles of EPA range and up to 422 hp. The EV9 has the lowest listed starting price, at $54,900, and offers up to seven seats and up to 5,000 pounds of towing on select AWD trims. For all three, verify the wheel-and-tire setup, charging route, home-charging plan, and practical towing range.
Porsche Macan GTS versus BMW X5 or Genesis GV70
The Macan GTS is the performance-first choice, with 434 hp and a 4.3-second 0–60-mph claim. Buyers cross-shopping the BMW X5 or Genesis GV70 should drive all of them on the same roads and compare seat support, steering, braking, ride quality, cargo access, rear-seat space, options, tire replacement cost, warranty coverage, and service pricing. A faster specification sheet does not necessarily produce the best ownership experience.
Match the SUV to your lifestyle
| Your actual use | Best starting point | Why |
|---|---|---|
| Daily commuter who wants attitude | Mazda CX-50 Turbo or Toyota RAV4 | Manageable size, practical cargo, and lower running costs than full-size or luxury choices |
| Weekend camper or outdoor traveler | Honda Passport TrailSport or Subaru Outback Wilderness | Useful AWD, clearance, cargo flexibility, and enough towing for many small trailers |
| Serious off-roader | Ford Bronco Badlands/Sasquatch or Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road | Functional trail hardware rather than appearance-only equipment |
| Boat or heavy trailer owner | Ford Expedition or Nissan Armada | Body-on-frame construction and substantially higher tow ratings |
| Family buyer | Honda Passport for two rows; Expedition, Ioniq 9, or EV9 for three rows | Choose based on actual passenger count, cargo behind the third row, and towing needs |
| Tall driver | Test Passport, 4Runner, Expedition, and Armada carefully | Seat travel, steering-wheel reach, sunroof headroom, rear-seat legroom, and door openings vary widely |
| Dog owner | Passport, Outback, RAV4, or Expedition depending size | Measure the cargo floor and test the dog crate rather than relying on cubic-foot claims |
| Luxury-performance enthusiast | Porsche Macan S or GTS | Chassis, braking, steering, and acceleration matter more than a cosmetic sport package |
| EV buyer | Rivian R1S, Hyundai Ioniq 9, or Kia EV9 | Choose according to range, towing, charging access, seating, service coverage, and budget |
| Fixed budget buyer | Mazda CX-50, Toyota RAV4, or a carefully inspected used SUV | Leave room for insurance, tires, fuel, maintenance, and accessories |
What to check before buying
- Write down the real mission. List passengers, trailer weight, cargo, annual mileage, trail type, and whether you park in a garage. “Adventure SUV” is too vague to select a trim.
- Verify the VIN-specific payload. Read the driver-door label. Payload must cover occupants, luggage, accessories, and tongue weight.
- Confirm the exact tow package. Check the engine, drivetrain, wheelbase, axle, hitch receiver, wiring, brake controller, cooling equipment, and owner’s-manual limits.
- Inspect the tires and spare. Find out whether the SUV has highway, all-season, or all-terrain tires; whether the spare is full-size; and what replacement tires cost.
- Measure the actual cargo area. Bring the stroller, cooler, bicycle, golf bag, toolbox, dog crate, or child seats you will use.
- Fit the driver and passengers. Check steering-wheel reach, headroom with the sunroof, knee clearance, rear legroom behind the correctly positioned driver’s seat, door-opening width, and ease of entry.
- Look underneath. For trail use, identify the lowest underbody point, real skid plates, recovery points, suspension clearance, and tire sidewall. Do not accept decorative skid-plate styling as protection.
- Test the technology in motion. Evaluate camera visibility, parking sensors, adaptive cruise behavior, lane centering, infotainment response, and whether safety alerts are distracting.
- Plan EV charging honestly. Confirm home electrical capacity, charging speed, local service coverage, public charging along regular routes, and trailer-friendly access.
- Price ownership, not just purchase. Get insurance quotes, tire and brake estimates, fuel or charging costs, maintenance schedules, and warranty terms.
- Check recalls and service history. For used vehicles, obtain a history report and independent inspection. For new or redesigned vehicles, verify open campaigns before delivery.
- Get the out-the-door price. Add destination, taxes, registration, dealer fees, options, accessories, financing costs, and any mandatory regional charges. Compare written offers, not monthly payments alone.
When an SUV is the wrong answer
Some buyers searching for a masculine-looking SUV would be better served by a different vehicle. A pickup may be more appropriate for frequent heavy towing, bed cargo, or dirty equipment. A wagon or hatchback may deliver better road manners and easier loading for a driver who does not need clearance. A minivan is often the superior family tool when maximum interior access, child-seat room, and third-row usability matter more than image. Choosing the right body style is more useful than buying an SUV for symbolism.

Large automotive publications remain useful. Car and Driver organizes recommendations by size, price, fuel type, luxury, safety, and seating. Edmunds describes real-world driving and instrumented testing, while MotorTrend combines objective measurements with hands-on evaluation.
This guide adds the context those broad rankings often leave underdeveloped:
- It translates “for men” into testable preferences instead of making biological claims.
- It names the trim worth buying rather than treating a model’s maximum specification as universal.
- It separates styling equipment from functional off-road hardware.
- It treats maximum towing as a configuration-dependent number.
- It explains why EV towing range is different from EPA range.
- It asks whether actual gear, dogs, strollers, and adults fit—not merely whether a brochure publishes a large cargo figure.
- It gives ownership cost, fuel, tires, brakes, service, and insurance more weight.
- It includes used alternatives and the possibility that a pickup, wagon, hatchback, or minivan is the better tool.
2027 caveat
Do not mix an announced or rumored 2027 SUV into a 2026 purchase decision unless it is clearly available, priced, tested, and configured for your market. If you plan to wait, compare the actual 2027 window sticker, warranty, safety results, tow rating, delivery date, and dealer price against the 2026 vehicle you can buy now.
Likewise, verify every volatile detail immediately before signing. Manufacturer prices, destination charges, incentives, trim availability, safety results, tire sizes, and EPA figures can change by model year, production date, drivetrain, and region.
Frequently Asked Questions
Is there really a best SUV for men?
No universal winner exists because “for men” describes an editorial audience rather than a vehicle category. For a balanced mix of daily comfort, AWD, towing, and light adventure, the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport is the best starting point. Serious off-roaders should consider the Toyota 4Runner or Ford Bronco, while performance buyers should look at the Porsche Macan GTS.
Is AWD or 4WD better for an SUV?
AWD is generally the better choice for pavement, rain, snow, and mixed driving. Part-time 4WD with low range is more useful for slow, technical trails. Tires, ground clearance, differentials, recovery points, and suspension hardware also matter; the drivetrain badge alone does not determine capability.
Which SUV is best for towing?
The 2026 Ford Expedition has the highest listed capacity in this group, up to 9,600 pounds when properly configured with 4×4 and the Heavy-Duty Trailer Tow Package. The Nissan Armada reaches 8,500 pounds, the Rivian R1S reaches 7,700 pounds, and the Toyota 4Runner reaches 6,000 pounds. Always verify payload, tongue weight, passengers, cargo, and the exact VIN-specific rating.
Should I buy the most expensive off-road trim?
Usually not. The Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road and Honda Passport TrailSport offer stronger capability-per-dollar than their luxury-oriented upper trims. Pay for a Bronco Badlands/Sasquatch, 4Runner Trailhunter/TRD Pro, or Expedition Tremor only when you will use the additional hardware.
What’s actually slowing this PC down?
Pick the symptom - the matching free tool is one click away.
Does an electric SUV make sense for towing?
It can, but towing can substantially reduce range. Trailer height, weight, wind, cold weather, hills, charging access, and the ability to use chargers with the trailer attached all matter. Route-plan with a large buffer and verify home charging before choosing an EV as a regular tow vehicle.
What should I check when buying a used SUV?
Check the exact model year and powertrain, maintenance records, recalls, tire and brake condition, underbody damage, four-wheel-drive operation, payload and tow equipment, independent inspection results, warranty terms, and service availability. A low used price does not guarantee low ownership costs, especially for luxury SUVs.
The Bottom Line
For most buyers, buy the 2026 Honda Passport TrailSport. It is the most convincing balance of everyday comfort, useful cargo space, standard AWD, 285 hp, 5,000-pound towing, and real but approachable trail capability.
Choose the Toyota 4Runner TRD Off-Road when ruggedness and 4WD matter more than refinement. Choose the Ford Bronco Badlands/Sasquatch when serious trail use and open-air capability are central to your lifestyle. Choose the Ford Expedition for heavy towing and family volume, the Porsche Macan GTS for genuine performance, and the Rivian R1S for an adventure-focused EV.
Before signing, verify the exact trim, payload label, tow package, tire size, safety result, cargo fit, service coverage, charging plan, and out-the-door price. The right SUV is not the one with the toughest marketing; it is the one whose capability you will actually use.
