There is no evidence-based single “best SUV” for car camping here: the right choice depends on usable cabin space, rear seats that fold suitably flat, ground clearance for your route, and where you plan to sleep. Start with the exact model year and trim you are considering, then choose among sleeping inside, an SUV tent attached at the cargo opening, or a rooftop tent.
What makes an SUV suitable for car camping?
Look first at the space you can actually use, not just a headline cargo-volume figure. Subaru’s camping guidance points to cargo room and rear seats that fold flat as useful features; it also describes turning the folded area into a sleeping spot in a pinch. Check the dimensions and seat-fold behavior for the exact model year and trim, because those details determine whether a person can lie down and whether bedding and gear can fit together. Subaru’s camping guidance
- Usable interior: check length, width, floor shape, and whether folded seats leave a level enough surface.
- Gear plan: decide what stays in the cabin overnight and what can go elsewhere.
- Route: consider whether your planned roads make ground clearance important; do not assume every SUV or camping setup suits rougher terrain.
- Roof capacity: if you plan to mount a tent or carrier, verify the vehicle and rack specifications before buying.
The available official guidance supports these selection criteria, but does not establish a current comparative ranking of SUV models or independently measured sleeping dimensions. Choose by checking the vehicle you intend to use rather than relying on a generic “best SUV” list.
Which sleeping setup fits your trip?
Sleeping in the cabin, using a tent that connects to the cargo opening, and sleeping in a rooftop tent are different arrangements. Compare them by sleeping location, how much cabin storage remains, compatibility, weather exposure and ventilation, setup burden, and campsite type. The sources do not provide controlled tests across these options, so the trade-offs below are practical decision points, not measured rankings.

Sleeping inside the SUV
This is the simplest arrangement when the cabin is long and flat enough, but it makes cargo placement the central problem: luggage that occupies the sleeping area has to move, and gear left inside can limit usable space. Subaru describes flat-folding rear seats as a way to create an emergency or minimalist sleeping area, not as a guarantee that every SUV has sufficient room for a comfortable night. Subaru’s camping guidance
Measure the available floor and compare it with the sleeping surface you need. Also plan for ventilation and privacy. If the cabin cannot hold both the sleeping setup and the gear you need, a cargo-opening tent or roof storage may preserve more room.

Using a tent attached to the cargo opening
An SUV tent connects a ground tent to the vehicle’s cargo area, adding space for sleeping, lounging, or storage without putting the sleeping area on the roof. It is still a ground tent: confirm the campsite has room for its footprint, and verify the tent fits the vehicle’s hatch and body configuration.

Chevrolet Accessories describes its Napier Sportz SUV tent as a 9-by-9-foot ground tent with a vehicle sleeve and lists model-year fitment on its product page. The page says the sleeve can be unzipped so the tent can be used as a traditional ground tent; it also notes that the rainfly does not cover the sleeve side. Confirm the exact product version and fitment if that distinction matters for your setup. Chevrolet Accessories listing
Choosing a rooftop tent or cargo carrier
A rooftop tent keeps the sleeping area above the vehicle, while a rooftop cargo carrier moves some gear out of the cabin. These are separate uses of roof space: decide what you need to carry and check whether the vehicle and rack system support the intended configuration.

Rooftop tents
Dometic distinguishes soft-shell tents, which can offer more room and annex options, from hard-shell tents, which have a compact footprint and rigid construction. Its guidance is to check roof load limits, rack type, bar spacing, packed dimensions, and both vehicle and tent-maker recommendations. Dometic’s rooftop-tent guide
Dometic also distinguishes dynamic load—roof carrying capacity while driving—from static load while parked. Do not use a general guide to infer the safe rating of a specific SUV or rack; follow the vehicle manual, rack maker, and tent maker together. Dometic

Rooftop cargo carriers
Nissan’s camping guide suggests rooftop cargo storage as a way to leave more interior room for sleeping. That is a general space-saving idea, not a fitment recommendation for every vehicle. Check vehicle and rack limits, attachment compatibility, cargo security, and clearance before loading a carrier. Nissan’s camping guide Kia EV9 manual

Follow the instructions for the exact vehicle, rack, and tent combination. Kia’s EV9 owner-manual page says, “Never move the vehicle with occupants in a roof tent.” It also tells users to keep occupants within roof-rack load capacity, secure the tent to crossbars and rails, and avoid using a fuel-burning device near an occupied roof tent or awning because of carbon monoxide risk. These are Kia EV9 manual instructions; consult the applicable manual for your own vehicle rather than treating the wording as universal. Kia EV9 owner-manual page
- Verify the vehicle’s roof-load rating and the rack’s rating; do not treat one as a substitute for the other.
- Confirm the tent’s mount requirements, crossbar spacing, and packed dimensions.
- Secure the tent as directed and observe all occupant and load limits.
- Never move the vehicle with people in the tent, and keep fuel-burning appliances away from an occupied tent or awning as directed in the applicable manual.
How to choose for your kind of trip
- Established campsite and minimal gear: consider sleeping inside if the folded-seat area suits your dimensions and you can store gear elsewhere.
- More sleeping or lounging space at ground level: consider a cargo-opening SUV tent, after checking fitment and campsite footprint.
- Keeping the sleeping area off the ground: consider a rooftop tent only after confirming the complete vehicle-and-rack system, load limits, and safety requirements.
- Need the cabin for sleeping but have bulky gear: a rooftop carrier may free interior space, provided the vehicle and rack allow it and the load is secured correctly.
For any option, verify model year, trim, product version, and market-specific fitment before purchase; a product listing for one configuration does not establish compatibility with every SUV.
