The Ferrari 458 Speciale is my pick for the best supercar of the 2010s—not because it wins every performance contest, but because it distills the decade’s supercar appeal into a focused, emotionally distinctive road car. The ranking below weighs driving character, engineering significance, performance, usability and influence. Put different emphasis on those qualities and the order can change; there is no objective, universally accepted winner.

The category has a porous edge: the LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder are often called hypercars, yet decade retrospectives place them in the same conversation as supercars. They belong here as the era’s hybrid halo-car trio. This is an editorial ranking of road-legal production cars from 2010 through 2019, not a claim of personal testing or a universal consensus.

How this ranking weighs the cars

Each car is judged across five overlapping qualities: driving character and emotional distinction, engineering significance, performance, real-world usability, and influence on the decade. Performance figures help describe a car, but they do not settle the ranking: claimed acceleration, independent testing and everyday practicality are different kinds of evidence. As Top Gear’s Craig Jamieson put it in a 2018 comparison, “How does one quantify practicality, anyway?”

That is why a naturally aspirated Ferrari, a hybrid halo car and a rear-engined Porsche can all make a credible case without being measured on one simple scale. Goodwood’s December 2019 retrospective likewise highlights several cars on this list while acknowledging how difficult it is to select a single standout: Goodwood’s 10 best supercars of the 2010s.

The best supercars of the 2010s, ranked

1. Ferrari 458 Speciale

The 458 Speciale takes the top spot for the way it sharpens an already celebrated formula without losing its distinct character. It represents a late, focused evolution of the naturally aspirated 458: a road-going Ferrari whose appeal is not reducible to a straight-line number or a technology checklist. Goodwood singled it out among the decade’s standout supercars, reinforcing its place as a defining choice for drivers who value involvement as much as outright pace.

Its first-place position is an editorial judgment, not a claim that it is the fastest or most advanced car here. A buyer or enthusiast who puts hybrid engineering, lap-time potential or spectacle first could reasonably choose another.

2. Porsche 918 Spyder

The 918 Spyder earns second for making hybrid power central to a supercar’s identity rather than treating electrification as an afterthought. Alongside the LaFerrari and McLaren P1, it helped define the decade’s hybrid halo-car generation. That engineering direction is a major part of its legacy, even though the sources here do not establish a like-for-like measurement that proves one member of the trio superior to the others.

The 918 is frequently placed near the supercar/hypercar boundary. Its inclusion reflects how decade retrospectives discuss it alongside the period’s supercars, not an attempt to settle a naming dispute.

  • Vibrant Color: Showcasing a rich white hue, this miniature captures the sleek and stylish design of the full-size McLaren.
  • Compact Size: Measuring approximately 5 inches in length, this model is perfectly sized for display or playtime.

3. McLaren P1

The McLaren P1 shares the hybrid halo-car conversation with the 918 Spyder and LaFerrari. Its significance is as much about the ambition of that generation as about any isolated performance claim: three major manufacturers explored hybrid assistance in their most exclusive road cars, giving the decade a new engineering reference point.

Ranking the P1 third is not a verdict that it is measurably better or worse than the other two. The available sources establish their place in the same era-defining discussion, not a comparable test that resolves their order.

4. Ferrari 488 Pista

The 488 Pista makes the list as a track-focused road car shaped by Ferrari’s racing-technology transfer. Ferrari’s March 2018 launch material gives its output as 720 cv at 8,000 rpm and its specific output as 185 cv per litre. Those are Ferrari’s stated figures, expressed in metric horsepower (cv), not bhp. The car’s appeal lies in pairing that high-output turbocharged V8 with a road-legal, focused brief.

It also makes a useful comparison with two other highly focused mid-engined rivals from the period: the McLaren 720S and Porsche 911 GT2 RS. Top Gear’s February 2018 article compared their published acceleration figures, but those figures should not be mistaken for a single independent test conducted under identical conditions. Ferrari’s launch specification is here: Ferrari’s 2018 488 Pista announcement.

5. McLaren 720S

The 720S is the ranking’s all-round performance benchmark: a supercar that combines striking pace with the broad capability expected of a road car. McLaren lists 720 PS (710 bhp), 770 Nm and 0–62 mph in 2.8 seconds on its 720S model page. These are manufacturer-listed specifications, not independent test results.

In Top Gear’s 2018 comparison of the 720S, 488 Pista and 911 GT2 RS, the published 0–62 mph figures were 2.9 seconds for the McLaren, 2.85 seconds for the Ferrari and 2.8 seconds for the Porsche. The comparison also considered technology, top speed and practicality; its figures belong to that period comparison rather than a new, standardized test. McLaren’s model specifications are listed at McLaren Automotive’s 720S page, and the period comparison is at Top Gear.

6. Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991.2)

The 991.2-generation 911 GT2 RS is a road-legal outlier: a rear-engined Porsche with a particularly uncompromising performance brief. Porsche introduced it in 2017 as the most powerful 911 at that time. Its presence here matters because the decade’s supercar story was not limited to mid-engined exotics; the GT2 RS brought the 911’s distinctive layout into direct comparison with cars such as the Pista and 720S.

Top Gear’s 2018 comparison listed a 0–62 mph figure of 2.8 seconds for the GT2 RS, alongside the Pista and 720S figures cited above. That period-published number is not a result from a fresh, common-condition test. Porsche’s 2017 announcement is at Porsche AG.

  • PERFECT SIZE: Compact 5-inch length makes it ideal for display or play while maintaining impressive detail and proportion
  • QUALITY MATERIALS: Constructed using high-grade die-cast metal and quality materials for long-lasting performance and safety

7. Lamborghini Aventador SVJ

The Aventador SVJ earns its place through spectacle and character: a naturally aspirated V12, active aerodynamics and a distinctly theatrical approach to performance. Lamborghini lists 770 CV at 8,500 rpm and 0–100 km/h in 2.8 seconds. These are Lamborghini’s specifications, with power stated in CV and acceleration in metric units.

The SVJ is a strong alternative for anyone who values dramatic engine character and active-aero engineering above the more balanced strengths of the cars ranked ahead of it. Lamborghini’s model history and specifications are at the Aventador SVJ page.

8. Ford GT (2017)

The 2017 Ford GT closes the ranking as a competition-influenced, uncompromising road car with an identity distinct from the European mid-engined rivals above. Goodwood included it among its decade standouts. Its place is less about a directly comparable acceleration figure in the cited material and more about the way it brings a racing-shaped design and character into the road-car supercar conversation.

How the 488 Pista, 720S and 911 GT2 RS compare

These three are especially useful to compare because Top Gear covered them together in February 2018. The table keeps manufacturer claims separate from figures published in that period comparison; they should not be treated as results from one standardized independent test.

Car Character and engineering Acceleration figures Source and qualification
Ferrari 488 Pista Track-focused road Ferrari; Ferrari emphasized racing-technology transfer. Manufacturer launch specification: 720 cv at 8,000 rpm and 185 cv/litre. 0–62 mph: 2.85 seconds in Top Gear’s 2018 comparison. Power figures: Ferrari, 6 March 2018. Acceleration: Top Gear, 24 February 2018.
McLaren 720S Mid-engined performance benchmark; McLaren lists 720 PS (710 bhp) and 770 Nm. 0–62 mph: 2.8 seconds on McLaren’s model page; 2.9 seconds in Top Gear’s 2018 comparison. Manufacturer figures: McLaren Automotive model page. Period comparison: Top Gear, 24 February 2018.
Porsche 911 GT2 RS (991.2) Rear-engined road-legal performance outlier; Porsche called it the most powerful 911 when it was unveiled in 2017. 0–62 mph: 2.8 seconds in Top Gear’s 2018 comparison. Model positioning: Porsche AG, 2017. Acceleration: Top Gear, 24 February 2018.

The figures illustrate how close the published acceleration claims were, not which car is best overall. Character, chassis technology and everyday usability cannot be collapsed into a single number, and the ranking gives those qualities weight alongside performance.

Why the 2010s supercar story includes hybrids

The decade did not replace conventional combustion flagships with a single new formula. Instead, naturally aspirated and turbocharged cars continued to develop alongside a trio of hybrid halo cars: LaFerrari, McLaren P1 and Porsche 918 Spyder. Their shared significance is the engineering direction they represented, not a proven hierarchy among them.

That broader context explains the ranking’s mix. The 458 Speciale and Aventador SVJ stand out for naturally aspirated character; the 488 Pista and 720S represent turbocharged performance; the 918 and P1 bring hybrid engineering into the top tier. The Ford GT and 911 GT2 RS add distinct competition-influenced and rear-engined identities.

Could another car be the best of the decade?

Yes. The Aventador SVJ has a compelling case if drama, V12 character and active aero are the priorities. The 911 GT2 RS moves up if the focus is a road-legal, rear-engined performance outlier, while the 918 Spyder, P1 or LaFerrari may lead for readers who see hybrid engineering as the decade’s defining shift. These alternatives reflect different weightings of the same criteria, not a contradiction of a single objective result.
