For a 2024 small luxury SUV, the Genesis GV70 is a strong place to start: Kelley Blue Book ranked it first in its compact-luxury list, with the Mercedes-Benz GLC second. That is one publisher’s judgment, not a universal winner. The right choice depends on the exact trim and drivetrain, plus how you weigh cabin comfort, value, fuel economy, cargo room, driving character and safety credentials.
Which 2024 small luxury SUV is best?
Kelley Blue Book named the Genesis GV70 its top-rated compact luxury SUV for 2024 and placed the Mercedes-Benz GLC next. KBB’s page currently displays a 4.8-out-of-5 rating for the GV70. Treat both the placement and rating as KBB’s editorial assessment, rather than as a consensus ranking or a guarantee that the GV70 will suit every buyer. Kelley Blue Book’s 2024 list and Edmunds’ 2024 small-SUV coverage use closely related but not identical category labels.
For a practical shortlist, compare the GV70, GLC, Lexus NX, BMW X3, Audi Q5, Acura RDX and Volvo XC60. The sources do not provide a consistent set of price, fuel-economy, cargo and equipment figures for all seven, so an across-the-board numerical ranking would imply more comparability than is established.
How the leading candidates differ
Genesis GV70: KBB’s top-ranked pick
KBB puts the GV70 at number one on its 2024 list. In an Associated Press comparison published by Edmunds, the GV70 is described as strong in value, performance and interior execution relative to the GLC. Mercedes-Benz GLC: a notable alternative with multiple powertrains
KBB ranks the GLC second and displays 29 mpg combined. The AP/Edmunds comparison identifies a 255-hp four-cylinder GLC 300 and a 416-hp AMG GLC 43. For the GLC 300, it reports EPA-estimated combined fuel economy of up to 29 mpg with rear-wheel drive and 27 mpg with all-wheel drive. These figures are specific to the GLC 300 drivetrain; they should not be applied to the AMG GLC 43.
Lexus NX: a well-rounded option with published practicality figures
KBB places the NX among its higher-ranked entries and highlights the brand’s quality, safety and resale-value strengths. Edmunds describes it as an all-around solid compact luxury SUV, noting its upscale interior and standard driver-assistance features. Edmunds lists 28 mpg combined and maximum cargo capacity of 22.7 cubic feet for the 2024 NX. Those are NX-specific figures, not a direct comparison with every rival.

BMW X3, Audi Q5, Acura RDX and Volvo XC60: compare the exact vehicle
KBB includes all four in its 2024 selection. Its descriptions characterize the X3 as a benchmark with many talents, the Q5 as a class highlight and the RDX as a more rational contender. These are qualitative editorial descriptions, not objective performance measurements. The available comparable figures do not establish a clear numeric winner among these models and the GV70, GLC and NX.

Safety awards depend on year, variant and build eligibility
The IIHS’s 2024 award page lists the 2024–25 Lexus NX and Mercedes-Benz GLC as Top Safety Pick+, the 2024 BMW X3 as Top Safety Pick+, and the 2024 Genesis GV70 as Top Safety Pick. The NX Plug-In Hybrid is listed separately as Top Safety Pick. The Acura RDX appears as a 2024–25 Top Safety Pick under IIHS’s midsize-luxury category, even though marketing and other publications may classify it differently. Some entries have build-date qualifiers, so check the award listing for the exact year, powertrain or variant and production eligibility before relying on the designation. Category boundaries also vary: the IIHS maintains a separate small-SUV page that includes models such as the BMW X1 and Lexus UX. KBB’s broader compact-luxury list includes differently sized or styled choices such as the Mercedes-Benz GLB and BMW X4. How to choose among the 2024 models
- Compare equivalent versions. Check engine, drivetrain and trim before comparing performance or fuel economy. The GLC 300’s published fuel-economy figures do not describe the AMG GLC 43.
- Test the cabin for your passengers. Sit in both rows and assess comfort, visibility, controls and materials. The cited pages do not provide a complete, consistent rear-seat comparison for every model.
- Check cargo capacity against your routine. Edmunds lists 22.7 cubic feet maximum cargo capacity for the NX; the cited sources do not supply a matching full set of capacities for the other shortlisted SUVs. Bring the items you regularly carry and check how they fit.
- Verify safety details for the specific vehicle. Match the IIHS award to model year, variant and any build-date requirements rather than assuming the badge applies to every version.
- For a purchase today, assess the individual used vehicle. These are 2024 models. Mileage, condition, service history and asking price vary by vehicle; the cited rankings do not establish current used-market values or inventory.
