What kind of sewing machine works for auto upholstery?
Look first for an industrial walking-foot or compound-feed machine. JACK’s upholstery application page recommends “a walking-foot or compound-feed machine” in response to the question of what machine is best for upholstery; that is the manufacturer’s recommendation, not an independent comparative finding. The walking foot helps feed layers together, a practical consideration when stitching upholstery stacks. Feiyue likewise describes its FY4400/FY4420 compound-feed walking-foot family for automobile upholstery.
“Heavy duty” on a domestic machine does not by itself establish that it has the feed system or capacity needed for a particular upholstery job. Conversely, not every repair or small project necessarily calls for the same industrial setup. Consider the material, seam bulk, project size, and how frequently the machine will be used.

How to choose for your projects
Start with your thickest seam
Assess the most demanding stack you expect to sew, including the material layers and seam construction. Compare that stack with the machine’s presser-foot lift or clearance. A higher published figure is only useful if the machine can handle your specific material and setup; ask the seller to confirm compatibility if the specifications do not clearly answer that question.
Check stitch length, needle, and thread
Compare the machine’s maximum stitch length with the stitch length your project needs. Also verify that its needle system and supported needle sizes suit your materials, and that its thread range covers the thread you plan to use. A maximum stitch-length figure alone does not establish that a machine is appropriate for a particular upholstery seam.

Make sure the work fits the workspace
Seat panels and other bulky pieces can be awkward to maneuver. Compare the machine’s clear workspace or arm arrangement with the size and shape of the pieces you plan to sew. The PFAFF 1245 page publishes a 270 × 115 mm clear workspace, while Feiyue lists 258 mm for the FY5318; the figures are not necessarily directly comparable because the pages do not establish a common measurement method.
Account for workflow and support
Confirm what the quoted configuration includes: table, stand, motor, and any required accessories. JACK’s H2 page describes a table-and-stand setup, but that does not establish what is included in every seller’s local offer. Before buying, ask about regional voltage, parts, service, warranty, delivery, and support for the exact model and configuration.
