The best performance exhaust header bolts are the ones that correctly fit your engine and header flange, provide the required thread engagement, and can be installed with the maker’s specified lubricant and torque procedure. There is no universal best bolt or torque value: confirm fitment first, then compare configuration, material, finish, and tool access.
Start with fitment, not material
Header fasteners must match both the engine’s threaded holes and the header’s flange. Before ordering, identify the engine and header application, then verify the thread diameter and pitch, the required under-head length, flange thickness, and clearance around the tubes. A bolt that is too short may not engage sufficiently; one that is too long may bottom out or create a clearance problem.
ARP’s 2026 catalog, page 94, illustrates how much fitment can vary even within one manufacturer’s header-fastener range. It lists Chevrolet small-block examples in 3/8-inch sizes with different under-head lengths, and LS-series examples in M8 with separate listings for 1/4-inch- and 3/8-inch-wide header flanges. It also lists a 3/8-inch-wide-flange LS stud kit. These are examples, not universal sizing advice; use the exact engine and header information to identify the correct part.
Check the full fitment before buying
- Engine family and cylinder-head application
- Thread diameter and pitch
- Required under-head length and available thread engagement
- Header flange thickness and the applicable flange-width listing
- Tube, chassis, and tool clearance around each fastener location
Choose bolts or studs around the assembly
Bolts are a straightforward choice when the header can be positioned while the fasteners are installed and tightened. Studs may help locate the header during assembly, but only if their length and surrounding clearance suit the installation. Select based on the actual header, engine access, and the fastener maker’s instructions—not on a blanket claim that one configuration is always better.

- Premium grade bolt kit to facilitate installation of exhaust headers
- Rated at 170,000 PSI, which is considerably stronger than Grade 8 hardware
- Bolts are 3/8" in diameter and have a 1.000 under head length; 16 pieces
- Manufactured from black oxide finished chrome moly steel
- Heads are traditional hex style, and premium-quality washers are included
Tool access matters as much as the fastener’s thread. ARP’s catalog describes compact 12-point nuts as useful near pipes, and notes a stud nose designed to help prevent cross-threading. Those features may help in a tight installation, but confirm that the relevant wrench or socket fits between the fastener and nearby tubes. Catalog features apply to the listed products, not automatically to every kit.
Compare material, finish, and kit contents
Material labels alone do not identify the right fastener. ARP describes its Stainless 300 as heat tolerant and highly corrosion resistant, and lists 8740 chrome moly options for header fasteners. The appropriate choice depends on the product’s complete specification and its compatibility with the application, as well as exposure to moisture and road salt. A generic “stainless versus steel” rule cannot replace fitment and installation information.
Rank #2
- Fastener finish: black oxide
ARP’s material specifications give Stainless 300 a typical tensile strength of 170,000 psi. Its 2026 catalog lists a nominal tensile strength of 180,000 psi for the header bolt and stud materials shown there. These are manufacturer-published figures for the materials described, not a universal header-fastener requirement or an independent comparison test.
Check the specific kit listing for finish and included hardware. Catalog options include polished stainless and black oxide chrome moly, washers, and drilled models intended for safety wire. A special feature is useful only when it suits the application; do not assume washers or other accessories are included unless the product listing says so.

Make the final comparison by application
Once you have confirmed fitment, compare candidate kits on the details that affect installation and use:
- Application: exact engine, cylinder head, and header flange listing.
- Dimensions: thread size and pitch, under-head length, and flange thickness.
- Configuration: bolt or stud, plus any required nuts or washers.
- Access: head or nut style and clearance for the tool near the tubes.
- Material and finish: complete product specification and relevant corrosion exposure.
- Instructions: kit-specific torque and lubricant requirements.
For example, ARP Store lists part 434-1102 as a polished stainless, hex-head kit for a Chevrolet 3/8-inch-wide header flange. Consider it only if that flange description and the rest of the product’s application details match your setup. The product listing says fulfillment ships direct from ARP and that lead times may vary; availability and fulfillment timing can change.

Use the exact kit’s torque and lubricant instructions
Do not apply a torque figure found online for a different engine, fastener, lubricant, or material. ARP explains that kit recommendations can differ from vehicle-maker specifications because clamp-load targets and the materials of the fastener and head or block affect the recommendation. Follow the instructions supplied for the exact fastener kit, while also consulting the applicable vehicle and header information where required.
Lubrication changes the relationship between tightening torque and clamp load. ARP’s Fastener Installation FAQ states, “Our torque values are based on using Ultra-Torque.” It also recommends lubricant on the threads and under the bolt head or nut bearing surface unless a thread sealer is used, and says lubrication is particularly important for stainless fasteners to promote even clamp load and help prevent galling. Because the FAQ covers general fastener installation and multiple engine fastener types, use the exact header-kit instructions to determine the applicable lubricant and procedure; do not assume a general recommendation overrides them.

Common buying and installation mistakes
- Ordering by engine family alone: headers can differ in flange width and thickness, and kits may use different lengths or threads.
- Choosing by material name only: stainless or chrome moly does not tell you whether dimensions, access, and instructions match.
- Assuming a generic torque value applies: torque recommendations depend on the specified fastener and lubricant.
- Mixing lubrication practices: do not substitute dry tightening or a different lubricant for the kit’s stated procedure.
- Ignoring tool clearance or kit contents: confirm access around pipes and verify whether the kit includes the washers or nuts you need.
