For 2026, the available evidence supports four new-car options under a nominal $40,000 starting-price cutoff—not ten verified sports cars. The strongest fit depends on what you want: an open-top two-seater, a compact rear-drive coupe, or a larger, more powerful pony car. Treat the prices below as published starting figures, not out-the-door quotes.
Which new sports cars under $40,000 are worth considering in 2026?
This shortlist covers the four models supported by current comparison-page information: the Mazda MX-5 Miata, Toyota GR86, Subaru BRZ, and Ford Mustang. Their published starting prices are below $40,000, but the cited pages do not provide a uniform accounting of destination charges or other fees. A starting price does not guarantee that a particular trim is available locally or will stay within your budget after charges.
| Model | Published starting price | Body and character | What the evidence establishes |
|---|---|---|---|
| Mazda MX-5 Miata | $31,665 (Car and Driver) | Two-seat, open-top roadster | Mazda says the 2026 model has a 2.0-liter four-cylinder producing 181 hp and a standard six-speed manual. Car and Driver rates it 10/10 and places it first on its affordable-sports-car list. |
| Toyota GR86 | $32,695 (MotorTrend and Car and Driver) | Rear-wheel-drive coupe with limited rear seating | Toyota lists a naturally aspirated 2.4-liter boxer engine with 228 hp and six-speed manual or automatic transmissions. Car and Driver praises its steering and chassis. |
| Subaru BRZ | $37,055 (MotorTrend and Car and Driver) | Coupe closely related to the GR86 | It appears in both publications’ affordable-car coverage. The available evidence does not establish a universal advantage over the GR86. |
| Ford Mustang | $34,990 (MotorTrend) | Larger pony-car option | MotorTrend includes the 2026 Mustang in its under-$40,000 ranking. Confirm the specific 2026 trim and its final price before treating it as within budget. |
Prices are editorially listed starting figures, not comparable final quotes. Confirm the selected trim, destination charge, taxes, dealer fees, and local inventory with a manufacturer configurator or dealer.
How to choose between the four
Choose the Miata for an open-top, two-seat roadster
The Miata is the clearest choice if a convertible roof and two-seat driving experience matter more than passenger or cargo capacity. Its standard six-speed manual and 181-hp engine are manufacturer-reported 2026 specifications. Its two-seat layout is the main practical compromise.

Choose the GR86 or BRZ for a compact coupe
The GR86 and BRZ are closely related coupe alternatives. Toyota specifies 228 hp and a choice of manual or automatic transmission for the GR86. The cited material does not establish a general reason to prefer the BRZ over its Toyota twin, so compare the specific trim and equipment, local price, availability, dealer experience, and which one you prefer to drive.
Consider the Mustang for a different, larger proposition
The Mustang is the broader, more powerful pony-car choice among these four, rather than a direct equivalent to the small roadsters and coupes. MotorTrend lists a 2026 starting price of $34,990, but the evidence here does not verify that every trim—or the trim you want—falls below $40,000. Edmunds reported 315 hp and a $33,515 starting price for the 2025 EcoBoost coupe; those are 2025 figures and should not be used as a 2026 price quote.

Why published rankings name different winners
A ranking is useful only when you know what it measures. MotorTrend’s 2026 under-$40,000 list ranks the Mustang 9.5/10, GR86 9.2/10, and BRZ 8.5/10. Those scores are MotorTrend’s editorial judgments. Car and Driver’s affordable-sports-car page rates the 2026 Miata 10/10 and also lists the GR86 and BRZ at 10/10, reflecting its own testing and editorial process. Neither list proves a universal winner for every buyer.
iSeeCars describes its 2026 under-$40,000 ranking as assessing reliability, resale value, and safety; its page places the BRZ first among its ranked entries and the Chevrolet Camaro convertible second. That is a different basis from an editorial driving ranking. The page reports an analysis of 12 million vehicles; that figure describes the scale iSeeCars reports for its analysis, not the number of sports cars under $40,000.

Check the real budget before you shop
- Choose a target trim. A model’s entry price does not establish the price of every version. Check the current manufacturer configurator for the exact model year and trim.
- Build the full purchase figure. Ask the dealer to identify the destination charge, taxes, dealer fees, and any other charges in a written out-the-door quote.
- Check availability locally. Confirm that the quoted trim is actually available and that the quote applies to that vehicle.
- Compare like with like. A base coupe and a more heavily equipped convertible are not directly comparable just because both model names appear below the same headline cutoff.
What “under $40,000” means here
The cutoff refers to published starting prices for new-car candidates, not a guarantee that the final transaction price will be under $40,000. Destination, taxes, dealer charges, trim selection, and inventory can move the total. The shortlist is limited to the four 2026 candidates supported by the available current comparison-page evidence; it does not establish ten distinct qualifying new sports cars. Used cars or adjacent categories could broaden a different guide, but they are not included as verified new-car picks here.
